Try roughing-up the pipe some with coarse emory cloth or light sand paper.

Can I wipe the Black Iron Pipe with acetone, spray pain it black and a clear coat then use this?

Not trying to discourage you but it's really not necessary. The black pipe works just fine and additional coats of paint may keep the clamps from sliding as freely as they should. They look sharp too with just the black pipe.

What is the maximum clamping pressure (in pounds) ?

I wish I had a way of answering that accurately. It seems to be able to draw quite a lot of weight.

how do these compare to the old Jorgensen Pony clamps? Same stoutness or chintsy?

These are more stout than the old pony clamps. Really well built.

I am wondering how this would work with pvc pipe.

I don't know? But when I clamped down hard the black metal pipe would bow very noticeably. I would guess that PVC would not work, the threaded end you'd likely break.

Can this be used as a spreader?

I don't think so.

These pipe clamp ends make for the strongest and most versatile clamps you can buy. Being able to buy pipe in almost any length means you can always have a big enough clamp.

Like having a multiple clamps
These are a higher quality pipe clamp. You are limited only by the length of your pipe(s). They are great for building cabinets. Need a longer clamp, use a longer pipe. The possibilities are endless. Saves space and saves money.

Handy Clamps
The nice thing about pipe clamps is that you can clamp something across a large distance without having to buy really large, expensive clamps. All you need is a length of cheap pipe to get the distance you need. These clamps seem pretty well made. The problem I had with these clamps was that there was no documentation about the type of pipe to get and how the clamps actually work. What you need is black ½ inch pipe threaded at one end. So one piece of the clamp threads on to the end and then the other piece has a kind of clutch to attach part way along the pipe.

The clamp does what I bought it for, however, sometimes the part without the screw clamp doesn't want to release; it kind of gets stuck on the pipe and I have to do a lot of wiggling to get that end free.

Amazing Clamps
I have more clamps than a sane person should have. The Bessey 3/4" pipe clamps are the best quality clamps I have. I have used these for a number of different applications and they have proven to be strong, reliable, and easy to use. The large threads really make strong clamping possible. They blow away every clutch bar/F-clamp that I have used. I love pipe clamps because of their versatility and I have found my go-to clamps with these ones.

Decent
Does the job. Fits 3/4" pipe perfectly. Made a nice bike stand with it.
