Questions & Answers

Does 3/8 inch mean that it only takes that size drill bits??

Asked by: PGHKATE
Drill bits come in many sizes. The shaft end of the drill bit is usually the same size as the cutting tip of the bit. It's not like socket sizes. Ex, 1/4- 3/8- 1/2 inch sockets can only be used with 1/4-3/8-1/2 socket wrenches. It means the chuck opens a maximum of 3/8's of an inch. So you can use all the common drill bit sizes from say,, 1/16th to a max of 3/8". Anything over 3/8 is pretty big for most basic household tasks. If you needed a drill for automotive jobs, you might want a drill with a 1/2 chuck but that drill would need to have much more power to turn a (bigger than 3/8) drill bit through hard wood or steel. So when looking at drill bits for using with this drill, purchase a set with 3/8 being the largest one in the set.

Customer Reviews

BLACK+DECKER 12-Volt NiCd Cordless 3/8 in. Smart Select Drill with Battery 1.5Ah and Charger is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from How it Failed Me. Pros: Good Design Powerful Fast Re-Charge to Finish few more screws Tight Chuck--Plastic & Metal Cons: Battery won't hold charge long No battery low indicator No replacement battery or charger New batteries are just as expensive as the drill itself. I hate writing bad reviews, but I have to for this drill. When I first bought it last year I was thrilled for the amount of money it was and how it chewed through my projects. BUT then the battery stopped working, either it was charging too long and ruined the battery, or it just does not last I am not sure but it no longer holds a charge. I tried using it today for a few small screws and it died right in the middle of my project. It does charge quickly, but drains just as fast. The easy design for bits, and strength levels is really helpful but I wish it had a battery meter so I would know when to stop charging it, or it was low. Not to mention the batteries are replaceable but 34 dollars! Just as much as if I bought a brand new one of these drills. I wish I had invested in a better, higher quality drill for my many needs. It was fun while it lasted, but wasn't long enough. I had better luck with the 7.2 volt version of B&D, and I use their products often, but with this drill I might as well set my money on fire. If you need a drill for small house projects, like hanging a picture or putting in cabinet hardware, this drill is fine and it can work for you. BUT if you need it for farm, building, or construction needs DO NOT use this one, it's not a heavy use drill.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Home drill I purchased this drill for mainly light use around the home. I brought it home, charged it up, and after a good full charge, I got to using it. First off I will say that this drill being a 12 volt isn't that powerful however, it's good for light duty things, but for heavy duty drilling I have to go with my plug in Ryobi or plug in Black and Decker. I would def recommend this for light work, and med work, but if your doing construction this wont fit the bill.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worked well until I increased the job I have had this drill for 3+ years. Until a few months ago I only used it around the house, hanging pictures, blinds, putting together furniture, etc. I rebuilt my deck over Labor Day and that seems to have knocked the life out of the drill. Constant heavy use over those 3 days, plus I've built 2 firewood shelters before the winter, and this thing is pretty much done. I would recommend this drill for household tasks, I think it would serve you well. If you are looking for a bigger project though, spend the extra $$. It will be worth it when you don't have to stop and charge every 45 minutes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from battery will not hold a charge. Bought for low price. It worked for small project originally. Went to use it again a few month's later and left it to charge over night and wouldn't hold charge through 1 nail. WOW what a quality battery. Someone told me if you don't use drill almost daily and frequently recharge battery they are ruined. Is that the case for all power drills? Replacement battery is 2/3 cost of new drill.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst drill in the history of the world Even with a full charge this drill has almost no power. It is slow and good for only about 8 screws per charge. 4 if you have to drill pilot holes. I thought maybe we just got a bad battery, so I bought a replacement. It is just as bad, maybe even worse than the original. And, because the batteries charge on the drill itself, you can't charge one while using the other. In no way would I recommend this drill to anyone, not even for light duty work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Performer I bought this drill/driver for general purpose household use and it has not let me down. You won't be building a deck with it but for most household projects it is just fine. The battery doesn't last all that long but it is most likely a NiCd and that's what you get. I like it for it's light weight and relatively good torque. Black & Decker quality has improved greatly in the last few years, as far as I can tell. I bought a B&D light duty jig saw recently and was equally impressed with the quality/value. My heavy duty Makita is now reserved for the big jobs. This unit is much lighter, too. I like it so well that I bought a second one primarily for a spare battery. Highly recommended and highly satisfied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Battery issue FYI: batteries should not be left on the charger too long. Read the instructions as to how long it takes to fully charge and do just that. Don't leave it charging overnight because you are damaging the battery more than anything. That's why some people are happy with the product. They follow instructions...! Granted, some of the other drills out there don't need to be 'babysat' because the chargers have a built in option to save guard the battery and you won't have to worry about any damages to it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A handheld screw driver is better I purchased this drill and did not keep receipt (my fault). It was only used 3 or 4 times, very light duty, when the battery stopped holding a charge. I return it for another one like it, same thing. This one is a month old, has driven maybe 20 2" screws and will not hold a charge long enough now to drive one 2" screw. Next time I will spend more money and keep receipt. So far B&D has not been helpful.
