Could you mount a vice to this somehow?

Could you mount a vice to this somehow?
Asked by: WillisMcGriddles
Wen used to make a vice that could be attached to the workmate bench through the holes. The workmate is it's own vice by the adjustable top 2 sections. You could attach a vice to a board and then attach the board to the workmate surface with clamps. Hope this helps.

Asked by: lag
Yes, the stability of the workbench Legs combined with the adjustable top will hold the mitre saw firmly in place. Also the height of the bench is perfect for access to your projects. Matt

It was over 35yrs old, thus used and abused, as I'm an avid wood-worker, son of an old German finish carpenter. The new one l just bought is not as 'heavy-duty' as my original, ie, the materials used today, from the gauge of metal in the frame to the thickness of the wood workbench itself are of lessor quality. The operation of the unit, re, set-up and/or breakdown, are pretty much the same, however, the wooden vice/clamping part has changed. The mfgrs have added a 3rd section, thus widening the overall workspace which is nice. They also added a 'vertical' clamping option, whereby the narrow worktop piece closest to the hand crank, allow you to use it as a backstop, or to check your work for square, etc! I'm glad Black & Decker still make their infamous workmate! The changes made offset the lessor qualities mentioned above. I'm still referring friends to buy this item, as it's a real 'work-mate', re, a 'third hand', especially when you're the only one working on a project! Buy it! It's worth it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't make them like they used to... I bought this despite poor reviews because my dad's 30+ year old workmate is so great. I never expected a new one to be quite as good, but I'm very disappointed with the quality of this product. First of all, one of the bolts required for assembly had a mangled head making it unusable (there’s no hex). Second, once I did complete the assembly, I put one of the feet on a ¼” carpet and the other three on the floor below. The frame is so flimsy that the jaws didn’t match up any more. There is a ton of play in the vertical clamping assembly which makes it awkward to turn the handles in the horizontal orientation. The belt connecting the two handles holds when you don’t want it to and slips when you don’t want it to which makes it awkward to crank the handles in the first place. The jaws are made of soft three ply which is already marred just from assembly. As another review notes, you have to clamp the jaws together for storage (otherwise they will likely end up falling out).

I was a little bit hesitant at first since I'm used to using saw horses and sheet of plywood to do my work. However, after further evaluation, comparisons, and reading the reviews I decided to shop around, and bought one. I purchased the B&D Workmate Model 425 for it's versatility, portability, and minimal storage. This is a great portable workbench made out of steel for strength with the ability to support up to 550 lbs. The fold out legs with rubber tips provide great grip and stability in steadying the 2.5 Sq. Ft. bamboo table top sections. The bamboo table top sections can be slid in and out to allow for vertical and horizontal clamping. By stepping on the step, and lifting the levers on either side allows for convenient folding, and space saving storage when hanging up the bench for the next job. With it's unique design I am looking forward of using this valuable tool for years to come.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not durable I bought this to replace my old FORTY year old Workmate which is still usable but getting very beaten up it has been used so much. As one of the previous reviewers noted, it has some useful new features but the build is now so cheap I cannot foresee it lasting more than 5 years. Plastic has replaced metal in some critical parts, and the edge-finishing is sharp. I cannot foresee the bamboo top lasting long with repeated clamping - the edge has already splintered. I do like the added versatility over the old model, but at the expense of less-durable build and weight reduction, I feel this is a poor trade-off. I have used and abused my old one; it has been one of my great workshop assets. Such a shame the build of the new model is not to the same quality and durability. That's off-shore manufacturing and cost-savings I suppose. I think I'll give the new one to my kids and re-make the top on my old one - out of Baltic birch plywood as per the original.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Be prepared for frustration when attempting to assemble this product.... Be prepared for frustration when attempting to assemble this product. The instructions are printed in extremely small type. I used my copying machine to enlarge the instructions so they could be read. Even this did little to help. There are no clear diagrams as to how the table surface is to be assembled correctly so the clamping mechanism works properly. I have the table "assembled", but I know it is not correct. You would think Black and Decker would spend a little effort in making certain their customers have a clear, readable set of instructions along with accompanying diagrams. I would not buy this product again.

I don't believe it was made to the Black and Decker standards. The metal is very light gauge and it has plastic parts that will brake sooner than later.I won't be buying any more of your products if this is your new standards.

I had to look at the picture on the box to even figure out what order the top pieces went in. It was however, pretty easy to put together dispite the lack of instruction.
