Does this unit come with the plug to wire it in case it doesn't interconnect with the older model I'm replacing?

three short beeps

what does three short beeps that happen infrequently mean? an model 7010B this has been happening since I installed it over a year ago.
Asked by: denn
Just talked with Mfgr. 3 short beeps every 60 seconds is a "malfunction". Nice that the owner's manual doesn't tell you what that is though.... Called the Mfg., and am told that our units manufactured in 2010, are past their 5 year live by 12 months. the Three beeps tell you they are still working but time to replace. When it gets to 5 beeps, the alarm is no longer functional, just keeps beeping to tell you that. Same model number manufactured now, has a 10 year life.

Where should these detectors be installed?

I thought CO detectors were supposed to be installed low on the wall and smoke detectors high. Also, they used to say CO detectors should be installed near potential sources of CO, like a gas furnace or water heater. I am thinking I will install one of these in the hall near our furnace and 9120B smoke detectors in all of the bedrooms. Since they are interconnected, there should be enough noise to wake us in case of excessive CO. I know that's not what they say in the manual but they are trying to sell as many devices as possible!
Asked by: eegorr
The experts recommend 1 unit per every level of your home. In bedrooms or directly outside of all bedrooms. Most homeowners typically have 1 unit mounted on the ceiling outside of the bedrooms.

I bought new house that came with 3 of these detectors. the first one was malfunction after 4.2 years (from the date in the back of unit) and I ordered a replacement through Home Depot. The second one started 3 beeps/min as malfunction recently (so ~4.5 yrs). This time I called the First Alert customer service for warranty, as advised from someone else. Surprisingly, the customer service was quite really great (which is the reason i give 4 star review) and they ordered a replacement for me. The third one has yet made any beep as malfunction as the others. and so far I am seeing that the life of this detector is somewhere from 4 years and up (warranty for 7 years).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Shelf Life for SC9120B First Alert Combo Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Be aware and forewarned when purchasing this product of the manufacture date on the back of the alarm unit. Customer service at First Alert (800-323-9005) tells me that there is a shelf life of only 5 years on units manufactured before May 2011. We have apartment buildings and In January 2016, we purchased eight units from Home Depot for replacement on units that were starting to chirp. The units we purchased had a stamped manufacturing date of April 25, 2011. Here it is August 2016 and we are having to replace all the units we just recently replaced as all the new units started chirping and will not cease chirping even after replacing with new batteries, twice (thinking perhaps the batteries were defective). The batteries are fine. It is the units that are at the end of their shelf life so I am told by customer service at First Alert; and unless I can produce the receipt, First Alert customer service cannot/will not assist me. 2015 taxes were filed and receipts are with accountant. I feel that First Alert should have not only the manufacture date on the back, BUT, should also have the expiration date stamped alongside. Had we known these units have a shelf life/expiration dates, we would not be buying in bulk and replacing expired units with more expired (but new) units. I am also disappointed that the big box stores are selling expired merchandise that should be pulled off the shelves!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I don't know if this is how all detectors are... I don't know if this is how all detectors are like. But. Before these hard-wired detectors, we used battery powered detectors. They would chirp to let you know it was time to change the battery. Change the battery and it stops chirping. Replaced this one, because, after replacing the battery, after replacing it a few times in the past few years, apparently the unit went broken, and the chirping would not stop unless I unplugged the unit (with new battery).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This alarm was purchased to replace the same model that... This alarm was purchased to replace the same model that was interconnected to our system. Once it was installed, it worked perfectly. One flaw with the model design, though, is the battery glide in that replaces older direct battery plug in. The battery glide in rarely glides in...rendering the alarm unable to detect the fresh battery, and requiring (you guessed it) purchasing a new alarm. We'll see...

I ordered this alarm to replace the one that expired after only 6 years, although it said should last 10 years. The part that was wired was not replaced, only the alarm front with battery. It was easy to install and I hope this one lasts at least 6 years. I will try to dust it when I think of it. Very satisfied with it.
