Homegrown goodness has never been so easy with the Back to the Roots Mushroom Kit. Back to the Roots gourmet mushroom kit enables urban apartment dwellers, suburban homeowners to rural farmers to quickly and easily grow up to a pound and a half of gourmet oyster mushrooms. Contained in each kit is a special mixture of recycled coffee grounds and mushroom seeds encased in a compostable box with a spray mister. Removal of either of the two perforated sides will reveal coffee grounds covered in a white layer called mycelium - the root of the mushroom. Our mushrooms bloom best when away from central air and heat and placed in a setting where there's indirect sunlight (e.g. kitchen window sill). Cut two slits in a + shape in the exposed plastic. Then, show your mushrooms some love by spritzing them at least twice a day. In 7 days, you'll see the baby mushrooms pop out and begin doubling in size every day until about day 10 when you harvest. Bonus Tip: Soaking the bag of coffee grounds and mushroom mycelium after cutting the + shaped slit overnight does wonders for encouraging a happy harvest. Back to the Roots (BTTR) is a 100% sustainable urban mushroom farm in Oakland, California. In 2011, Back to the Roots collected, diverted and reused 1 million lbs. of coffee grounds and helped families grow over 250,000 lbs. of fresh gourmet mushrooms in their own homes.
  • Everything you need to grow and harvest gourmet pearl oyster mushrooms in as few as 10 days
  • Kit contains recycled coffee grounds for soil, pearl oyster mushroom spawn (seed) and spray mister
  • 3 simple steps: open box, mist with water, harvest the crop
  • Harvest up to 1.5 lbs. of oyster mushrooms per box
  • USDA certified organic

Does this kit produce co2 or carbon dioxide when growing ?

Asked by: Romp
It’s a detritivore. By definition, yes it would produce a mild quantity of CO2. People and pets do, too.

Way cool mushroom farm .These are great oysters, and considered a prime species for hunters and foodies alike! They grow extremely fast too, just like in the wild. From day one, after giving the block a good soak, you will notice growth . First a swelling, then a cauliflower looking growth, then suddenly, you'll see loads of baby buttons on tiny stems. Mist twice daily, keep out of direct sunlight. Some of mine were ready to harvest in 6 days. Do not eat mushrooms if the body/stem is anything other than bright white . If the caps start to crack, They may be tough. Saute your oysters in butter and wine serve as a side or a topping. Yummo!

We had a great time with this and used the growth as an example for one of our children's science projects. We set this up and followed all of the instructions and within a week we started to see tiny mushrooms popping out from the side. By a week later the entire side was covered and we were ready to harvest. The entire time we were growing this we had our middle son charting the progress and taking pictures for a school project. My wife harvested all the mushrooms at one time and we started the next side which will be ready in a couple of days. The oyster mushrooms were pan seared along with onions to top steaks with and they tasted great.

My box of "Back To The Roots" Organic Mushroom Farm safely arrived 3 days ago. I have started growing these gourmet mushrooms using the indoor gardening box kit that came with the easy-to-follow directions printed right on the box. My first mushroom crop will be ready "to harvest" in 10 days...all I had to do was add water. The little sprouts have already begun to show! Since I have an outside garden and enjoy the produce grown there each year, this mushroom "box" garden fits "right in" with my lifestyle. I'm really quite pleased with the quality of this product! Thank you to the "Back to the Roots" inventors of this really neat product.

This mushroom growing kit is really impressive. Follow simple instructions and see mushrooms start to grow in one or two days. After that they grow amazingly fast, sometimes doubling every day. Get another growth from the back side of the kit, and maybe even a few more besides. My biggest problem was keeping it moist enough in our dry house, especially if we were gone for the day. The included mister helps quite a bit, but I also covered it lightly with plastic wrap and made sure that it was not in the sun (although it does need some light). Avoid the temptation of letting them get too large, as they can get a bit tough then. They tasted great sautéed with olive oil and onions! There’s also a great website that offers troubleshooting and tips. You can get a second, smaller crop from the other side of the growing medium “brick”, or if you want to wait awhile, place the container in the refrigerator until you are ready (within reason, I would guess). This is a live, product, so don’t expect to buy one then wait a year to use it, because it probably won't work. But it should last for a few months before you start. This probably isn’t cheaper than buying mushrooms at the grocery store, but really, this is more fun and education than anything. Great for kids, or yourself if you may be thinking of doing this on a larger scale in your garden. Makes a great gift, too.

The other, well it sprouted several teeny tiny ones that were tough as shoe leather in a day after popping up. I did exactly was the instructions said and have zero to show for it. According to the box and info on the site, I should have several pounds out of both of them by now and getting ready to pop the other side to start another crop. That never happened. I am returning these. What a sham. Maybe I got one with no spores in it, or put together incorrectly, or their instructions are dead wrong. Do not buy this!

This complete mushroom farm in a box has very easy to follow instructions. I started mine about a week and a half ago and yesterday I first noticed some small mushrooms starting out. In one day they've nearly doubled in size although they're still very small. This would also be a fun activity to teach kids about mushrooms. The suppliers of this farm are very enthusiastic mycologists and are eager to share their knowledge. I had questions about getting it to sprout a second time and they responded very quickly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I was excited to try this innovative concept . I like mushrooms and I've never tried oyster mushrooms. I followed directions on the package to a T. I first soaked the block overnight then misted twice a day and kept them out of direct sunlight for ten days. The mushrooms grew as advertised. On day eight I could not wait and picked one of the larger mushrooms. I sliced it up and sauteed it in butter. DELICIOUS!! But the directions say 10 days to harvest. On day ten the mushrooms seemed to be cracking on the edges. I harvested a meager crop 2.3 oz. and prepared them. They were tough and stringy. So disappointing!!! I have the option to open the other side of the package and try again. I'm not so sure it's worth the effort.

I followed the instructions carefully and had a full crop of mushrooms in 7 days. I should have harvested at 6 days because a couple of the caps shed spores by the time I got around to harvesting. Anyway, easy to harvest and are tasty sautéed in a little butter and white wine. After harvesting, you can pop open the back of the box for a second crop. The cost is above what you'd pay for oyster mushrooms at the grocery. The farm is worth the price because the mushrooms can't be any fresher. And they're fun to grow.
