Q:Should I add a filter to my setup?

Answer This Question
A: You don't need a filter, that's what the fish and the plants are for. Using regular, partial water changes along with the normal monthly pump cleaning is sufficient for keeping the tank clean. An external filter is not necessary.
by|Mar 17, 2022
A: No. Lol. The Berta fish and the plants are your natural filter. That is the whole point of the system. My water stays so clean. Pretty amazing how nature works.
by|Mar 4, 2022
A: I didn't have any luck with the fish but the seeds they send ya grow super fast literally once a week harvest and replant.

Q:Works well, but accumulates mold in the top part. Are the planter pieces dishwasher safe?

Answer This Question
A: Thanks for your question! We do not recommend putting any part of the Water Garden into a dishwasher as the chemicals can be harmful to the plants and fish. If you need to sanitize your tank for any reason, we recommend using a mixture of pure white vinegar and warm water. You can also check your local pet store for other non-toxic solutions. Feel free to get in touch with us at contact@backtotheroots.com for further assistance. :)

My New Project
My fiance’s family did a gift exchange this year for Christmas and my kids received this cool system. They weren’t into it much but I was too thrilled to tinker with it. Set up about 5 days ago, real simple and I think it’s great practice before getting deeper into aquaponics. This small system is helping me practice as well as do some research and development. I eventually will create a larger system as I love growing my own herbs and some produce as it is. Now I can watch plants thrive without fussing with soil and watch fish thrive without fishing with a bunch of chemicals. I can’t wait to taste these organic micro greens.

Mom Has A New Best Friend
Mom has been wanting a fish tank, but I was weary of getting something that required a lot of maintenance and frequent cleaning. I picked the Back To Roots system because it's an American small startup, and I liked the idea of a "self cleaning" tank that required little attention after initial setup.
I was impressed when the package arrived. The instructions came with great diagrams and photos, and I had it set up within an hour. I will add that you really need to wash and rinse the stones in cold water thoroughly. I kept adding water and swirling the stones in a large bowl, and did this several times until the water was clear and left litte sediment in the bowl. I used two and a half gallons of purified water instead of tap water, so I didn't even need to use the water treatment that was included. Instead of throwing a fish in right away, I decided to start the plant growing process first to let the ecosystem start with plants to start the oxygen cycle process. I also threw in some live plants on the bottom that the person in the pet store recommended. After about 3 days, plants were already starting to sprout. I then went out and got Buddy, a fiery red Betta. After letting Buddy sit in his bag inside the aquarium for 15 minutes to allow the water temperatures to balance out, I let Buddy into his new environment with a little fear and hope. He swam around freely, but I knew it would be a little while before we would know if he would be ok in the new water. Well, he adapted pretty smoothly. After a week or so, the wheat grass and micro radish was growing strong. We decided Buddy needed sone companions, and maybe something to keep the bottom clean from food that settled to the bottom. Went out and bought two Cory catfishes that I researched online, and found that they were good for that purpose and wouldn't upset Buddy. We named them Tom and Jerry, one was much smaller than the other. The 3 of them have been happy together for over 3 months now, and Mom loves watching them. I eventually added 3 bamboo plants to each section, and still grow wheat grass amongst them, removing the grass when when it has gone though its growing cycle. She gets a lot of compliments about how beautiful her tank is. We couldn't be happier with our purchase. Oh yeah, I named the Betta, Buddy, so that when we check in on him, we always ask, "What's up, Buddy?" :-)

It works
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I wasn’t sure what to expect. My kid studied ecosystems in school all year, so I thought “let’s see what happens.” I’m on my second harvest of sprouts. My salads are fancier. Admiral Ackbar is thriving. My kid is thrilled.

Is keeping my fish happy and safe
The assembling was quick and easy. The plants are actually sprouting. I got mine on clearance for $24.99 and for $25 it's worth it. The full $100 would not be as good value though. I'm glad to see a large tank marketed twords kids. I'm a kid but I still do research before getting a pet. It is really disappointing when companies market insanely gimmicky things for pets twords kids. I would recommend buying plants for inside the tank as well as a hideout. I would also recommend buying a different fish than the one the coupon is for because at the location I went to they all looked dead. I saw people complain that the pump sucked up their fish but my adult betta fish is perfectly fine

Love it!
The water garden is awesome. My kids and I enjoyed setting it up. The instructions were simple to follow. It looks really nice in our space and makes a pleasant water sound. We’re really surprised by how quickly the seeds are sprouting. Can’t wait to harvest our micro greens to eat on our avocado toast!

Bought this for nephew
I bought this for my nephew because he recently has taken an interest in marine biology. I figured for a 7 year old this would be a neat birthday present. Indeed it was, the self filtering tank makes it easy to use and in addition the fresh herbs you get has made my sister happy. Ultimately great product hopefully I find more on discount because I would totally buy them all.

It’s fun and easy to setup. You see results within 7 days, if not sooner. You get wheatgrass and micro radish greens. My coupon for the betta fish was expired, but you can reach out to the company for a new one. I got a heater and live plants for the tank. Eventually, I would like to get a snail to help keep the tank clean. I transferred a small Bok Choy from my Aerogarden into one of the pods. It’s been a fun addition to the household. It’s a 3 gallon tank which it’s easier to maintain and clean.
