I followed the directions but only ended up with one sprout growing to about 3 inches high after 3 months. It still hasn't flowered, which was the time when I was supposed to add fertilizer. The potting soil is a very interesting type of charcoal and it may be good to reuse for another plant, if this one continues to be slow. I have kept it in the sun in front of a window, but I am not sure if it's a problem that the jar itself heats up and that makes the roots hot. So I try to keep the jar in the shade and the plant in the sun. The internal clay container that holds the water is very convenient as the soil stays moist without having to water it. I live in Maryland and maybe it is very humid here, but I only need to water it every few weeks and the soil is moist enough that it occasionally seems to grow some mold. I'm still waiting to see if anything's going to happen.

Fun project to learn about growing food and with great results
I was pretty excited to get this kit going when it arrived in the mail. We grow a lot of our own food in our vegetable beds outside but getting to see things a little closer and in the confines of your kitchen is a lot of fun too. The instructions were clear and with little effort we were able to get the plants to sprout. It's still early in the season but I wanted to get this review up on this new product to let them know this is working great so far. We'll update this review as the plant matures and produces fruit but so far so good!

All in one kit is convenient, interesting, and fun! Everything needed is supplied. Good instructions, easy to follow.Easy to plant and care for! The clay olla pot buried within the soil keeps the soil hydrated. Only have to fill it with water once a week and it does all the work. Organic soil is rich in nutrients. There are several seeds in the packet so you can grow multiple batches! I am 65 years old, have planted many gardens, but must say this kit has been a great joy for me! I know children would love it as well. Great educational tool with a tasty reward eventually! I placed mine in the kitchen window that has a western exposure to the sun. Keeps the soil warm during the day, with a fluorescent light overhead at night. In 4 days, the seeds sprouted. In 25 days, the sprouts have grown to 1 1/2". I can't wait for the plant to mature, takes about 12 weeks, and produce tomatoes. I plan to grow more batches! I will submit another review in a couple of months to update the results.

So far love this cherry tomato self-watering planter. Was very easy to use and set up. Had great instructions. Since I have had it only two weeks I am hoping once it warms up the plant will really take off. Planted it in late March. This would make a great child and parent project. I did place a plastic saucer under the jar to protect the window sill. So far so good. You can see in the pics the seedlings coming up.

This Back To The Roots Self Watering Planter is a very simple, but fun product.  It even comes with Organic cherry tomato seeds and fertilizer stakes to use to plant and grow your first crop.  The directions were well written and easy to follow. It's really just a matter of filling the olla pot with water, adding water to the soil mixture and sowing the seeds about 1/4" deep. Then I set it on the table near a sunny window and now I am waiting for signs of tomato plant growth.  I will need to thin the plants a couple of times, fill the Olla pot when the soil gets dry and inset fertilizer stakes a couple of times, but it doesn't require much more attention or effort than that. Who would have thought that you could grow cherry tomatos inside the house year round?  Can't wait to pick and taste my first organic cherry tomato grown in a quart jar on my dining table! Yum!

What a nifty way to grow cherry tomatoes! This self watering grow jar is so convenient. It comes with everything you need to grow, seeds and fertilizers, and an olla, which holds water. The medium in which the plants grow resembles peat and dirt mixture. It needs a sunny window indoors or a grow light. Since I have no sunny windows I have placed it under my aerogarden grow light. Looking forward to having fresh cherry tomatoes.

I have to admit I am usually skeptical of these gardens in jars and what not because they kind of look like a gimmick most of the time. However this self watering planter is quite neat. Not only do they give you a HUGE jar filled with planting medium and mulch, but they provide you with fertilizer spikes to boot. (And obviously the seeds). I really like the self watering olna buried inside the jar, and everything was quick to set up. Now I'm just waiting for my seedlings to sprout.

This is a fun little experiment that hopefully will produce fruit (pun intended). The instructions are straightforward and give history on the unique watering system. Staging and planting took about 30-40 minutes but we were in no hurry doing it.
Our tomato seedlings sprouted in 5 to 6 days. Did an initial thinning 12 days after planting and saw an immediate increase in growth. Will thin again on day 19 or 20 and one final time after that.
This is a fun, novel project that hopefully will produce some tasty cherry tomatoes. A bit pricey but would make a great gift for a kid of any age. There's also a link to have a complimentary kit sent to a teacher of your choice.
