I cannot get the serrated head start drive cement screws into the backer board. I have even tried to put a nail in first.....and can't get the nail in either. Any ideas? Thanks! Lisa

it does take a little pressure to get them to start in hardie board, but stick with it. A good drill driver is necessary of course...

How many square feet of 1/4" backboard would this box cover?
Asked by: doorguy
Seems like it was from 60-75 screws per 3x5 board. So you might get 2 1/2 to 3 boards out of a box.

I am attaching Hardie backer to 1 x 2 furring strips on concrete block. I measured the thickness of the furring strip with a caliper and it reads 0.71 inches. If the backer board is 0.5 inches, that totals 1.21". Is this going to be a problem? The screws would appear to be 0.04" too long. Thats just a bit more than 1/32". Will the screws bite into the concrete block, or am I going to end up with all the screw heads sticking out 1/32"?
Asked by: JJB
I'm not an expert but the screws should be set a bit below the surface of the backer board. I would be concerned with the screws pushing the strips away from the concrete and ending up with a wall that's not flat

First time using Hardie board 1/2" for shower walls with Backer-On. A remodel and therefore working with aged fir studs. Backer-on screws went in well, but are very difficult to finish-sink to flush. I'm a builder that honors manufacturer's specifications. For me every job is by the book. Engineers know stuff. Engineers welcome feedback. You cant sink these screws to flush in my 1/2" Hardiebacker board surfaces. I couldn't. I went to countersinking every location a touch with a 5/16 drill. Otherwise the B-O's just would not go to flush. You kinda know when the hammer- drill is working it yet not making progress; and you're expecting that "snap". I didn't care to go there and these suckers refused to give in to flush on their own. I may continue to use them because I honor specifications, like the product, and want the warranty. But I have to do what I see necessary to set Backer-On fasteners flush as required.

These screws are the best thing for proper installation of 1/4" Hardie-backer board; period. The old style, with the square drive head, were prone to stripping before being fully set and mushrooming. The newly redesigned screw with the star drive head and improved serration make those previous complaints a thing of the distant past. I exclusively used these when installing 1/4" Hardie backer board for tile installs, with the mortar bed underneath as per the manufacturer's recommendation, and the results are great. Sure occasionally the coating will clog the head making driving the screw difficult or impossible, but that is only a relative few from the masses I have driven. The serration helps set the screw perfectly 99 out of 100 times; no more mushrooming. The engineers got it correct with this redesign; I have reduced install time by 25% easily without the stripping problem.
