how to replace?

The operator they sent did not fit my single pane louvred window though it looked like the one I had before - it was too big for the space. Besides they shipped two short cranks instead of the one long one I had ordered and needed (Can't use two short ones if you need one long. Duh...!?!) Tough to un-install the old operator - had to take the window apart on that side to pry it out. Tried to squeeze the new operator in: did not fit. I finally bypassed the system (disabled the rod and just left it there) by attaching plumbers tape with nut and bolt to the window and running it through the space where the crank shaft normally goes thru (I enlarged that hole, "cutting" the opening larger with a drill gradually). I can now open and close the window, pulling and pushing with the plumbers tape, even though it looks a bit odd. The Plumbers tape can be locked into 2 positions (open or closed) by hooking it on a finish nail I put into the window frame. Quite a job, needless to say. I wish you better luck!

Installs with ease, so long as you follow recommended installation procedures. Add a little white lithium grease for general smoothness of operation and protection from the weather. Torque tube pivot, opposite to operator will have to be loosened before the operator, installed on the torque tube, can be slipped into place. Buy several spares, they're cheap and you never know when they'll be needed. Also buy some spare pivots, they're plastic and they become brittle with age (sound familiar?) - easily broken if mounting screws are over-tightened.

I bought this along with a more expensive Prime-Line one because I wanted to be sure I was getting the one that fit properly. Turns out both would fit. This one is a bit lesser quality but works fine and is half the cost of the Prime-line. I have 1960's Philips Torque Windows and the fit was exact.
