A:  Whether or not you drill the air relief hole depends on the manufacturer of the pump. The manufacturer of the pump that this check valve will be in line with can answer that question. For more information, or if the pump is of our manufacture, please contact our customer support team at 800-991-0466, option 3. A:  NO! That would render it inoperable, as the air sealed in the chamber is what acts like a shock absorber when the water column slams back against the closed valve.

A:  I don't know what the problem is. I purchased this part for a friend because the original was cracked. She has not mentioned anything about a 'Clunking' noise, but sometimes when the pump shuts off the sudden stop causes the pipes to shake which could cause a noise.

                  by|Nov 5, 2018

A:  Did you install it as per the diagram? It needs to be in a vertical orientation in order to continue to function properly. The main reason an air cushion device stops working is that the air cushion disappears, in order words, the air chamber has filled with water. This can happen if there is a crack in the device allowing water to populate what should be the air chamber (in this specialized case the air cushion is under the very water that you are pumping through the pipes). If there isn't a crack, somehow the device has filled with water and you need open it up and drain it to get it working again.

A:  Because once the unit displays leaks around the some of the four bolts that mend the unit together. It looses some of the cushioning pressure for the flap or valve to easily and to float in its close position.

                          Doesn't work very long.
Home Depot should stop carrying this product. It simply doesn't work after a few months. It's even louder than before and it's not only a clunk, it's multiple, loud clunks. Terrible product.

Never worked quite right...and then the valve broke!
This worked right for maybe a month, if I'm being generous. After that, there was always some sounds of water surging back through the pipe in waves. It didn't flood back in to the sump, but after the waves stopped, there was a consistent stream back. It filled faster than it should. But I didn't realize this piece of junk was the problem, so I let it go, thinking it was just the way my system was as a result of the pipe setup. This continued for a year or two (I don't remember exactly when I bought it). The past few days, I noticed the pump would stay on at times. I checked the switch and it was fine. I couldn't figure it out. Then I noticed how much water was flowing back through the pump after it would cycle. It would almost fill it back up to where it turned on again and then it would run again within a minute. Sometimes the pump would get stuck on as a result. This really puts the pump at risk of burning out, so I was wanting to fix this problem quickly. I realized it had to be the check valve. I replaced it with one from Zoeller (Model #1030-0242) that has a clear tinted plastic around the valve and the valve also has a spring on it. That thing is MUCH MUCH better. It's far quieter, for one, and it does the job right. When the pump stops, there is NO back flow and it's quiet. It also takes a LOT longer for the sump to fill now. So, the pump will have a longer life and my electric bill will go down a bit. I'd never recommend or buy this junky version again. I'm very happy with my Basement Watchdog battery backup system and the switch that the main pump plugs into, but this check valve is not worth a dime. After replacing it, I looked inside and saw the valve was completely flipped over (see pictures). Once I tapped it with a screwdriver, it just fell out of place and I could see it was completely broken off. What junk. You can also see evidence in the pictures of where it had apparently been leaking from above the valve area. It looks like there was a small crack/hole there. That was probably there the entire time and perhaps part of the problem. Do yourself two favors: 1. Be sure to have a backup system (the Basement Watchdog battery system has been great for me for 13 years with only one battery replacement in that time). 2. Do NOT buy this check valve and instead get a Zoeller.

So far so good. I was able to install it relatively easy. I ran a few tests with it and it is so much quieter than the previous check valve. Very happy so far.

Read all reviews negative and positive. Decided to buy it and give it a try. My pump failed, so I had to re-due pipping anyway. I installed the valve and I have noticed reduction in in Klunkless. It did not eliminate the entire klunk, but the klunk that is left is outside. It does transfer into the house, but the reason it still exists it the way the pipe is deigned not to freeze. The basement klunk is gone. Overall I believe this product did what is designed to do.

it was defective out of the box
I bought this valve because my original valve started leaking when I replaced my sump pump. The check valve leaked out of the box. I returned it and bought an Everbilt valve that was much quieter than this valve. It's really junk.

Failure to eliminate clunk in less than 2 years
Worked fine for but now has loud clunk the air chamber was to eliminate. Don't know if air chamber failed if that matters as it is glued together. Will replace with another brand. Only 1 year warranty.

Worst check valve - don’t buy!!!
I installed this check valve about a year ago. Our sump pump almost never runs (only when we get over 1” of rain all at once or when the snow melts). The exit pipe is right under our bedroom and all of a sudden we heard 5 of the largest hammer noises in a row at 2 in the morning during a rainstorm!! Didn’t think my 1 year old check valve that was barely used could have been crap but sure enough it was. Spend the extra $15 bucks and get the everbilt quiet check valve… that’s what I did and I couldn’t be happier!
