Product Overview

  • 25 in. x 54 in. R-50 Attic Stair Cover
Battic Door R-50 Attic Stair Cover is an energy-efficient pull down ladder insulating cover. New codes require the attic access to be insulated to the same level as the attic. The kit includes everything you need to cover, seal, and insulate your pull down ladder. The kit includes the rigid box (stair cover), rubber gasket, a reflective shield and R-50 fiberglass insulation to cover the top of box. Installs easily without tools. Insert the insulation into the reflective shield, and place the stair cover rigid box into the reflective shield covering the insulation. The shield holds the insulation to the box. Additional insulation (not included) may be added to the sides, or insulate the attic up to the sides of the stair cover kit. The stair cover fits between trusses. Available in 3 sizes to fit most any size or brand of pull down ladder: 22 in. x 54 in., 25 in. x 54 in. and 30 in. x 54 in. Also available without insulation (installer may add their own insulation to desired level).

Questions & Answers

How High is it above the stairs opening?

My attic stairs opening is very near the eaves and I only have 13 inches above the place where the insulation frame sits. Can the insulation be compressed down that low?

what are the out side dimensions of the box

It is 25 x 54 as the above description says. It fits 24 x 52 attic door opening. When you open your door there should be joists surrounding the door on the attic side. there is about half inch leeway on the shorter sides and about an inch on the longer sides if the home builder did their job correctly. Just buy the one that fits your door size but if you open your door and measure inside against the upper frame it should be the same measurements as one of the sizes that they advertise. It took about 35 minutes to assemble and install. Most of the time was cutting the foam edge strips and sticking them on the frame the insulation that fits into the box is pre-cut to the correct size needed.

Don't get me wrong this is a great and easy to install product, but the inventor must be making tons of money as it consists of a cardboard box, some special quilted foil and a couple of lengths of standard fiberglass insulation cut to fit in the foil and box and a roll of frost king foam strip. It took about 35 minutes to install. It says to put everything up into the attic after you assemble the cardboard box, but since my attice is all insulation and no where to walk on, i did it on the floor below the attic door, just not putting the cardboard box into the foil until i pulled that up into the attic as it is too wide to go through the attic door if fully assembled. I only hope that the cardboard ages well and that if entry to the attic is needed that it will be easy to open up and enter. Didn't mind spending $120 plus tax since it seems to work and fit perfectly.

This is an expensive cover that unfortunately has a poorly designed cardboard frame that doesn't lock into place. We found the four locking cardboard tabs are too short to lock into their respective slots requiring the installer to reinforce the four cardboard connections with gaffer tape. Installation was quick and easy. Note that R-50 insulation is only on the top of the stair cover where the fiberglass insulation is approximately 16" thick. Sides of the cover are a R-5 or maybe R-7 reflective material. We will see how this holds up and insulates the stair opening during our hot Atlanta summers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Instant results I Installed this product with the insulation on top of the box and had no problem with my stair case closing... The moment I closed it over the seal around stair case surround, I notice a definite difference.. I recommend this product to everyone whose staircase falls within specs. Please respond back with feedback to confirm same results..( Hint* The framing of my home is off so I doubled up on the foam surround which worked great to seal the cover)

Outer reflective cover feels flimsy so there is no convenient way to handle the assembled product from upper side. A rather large flat area near attic door is needed to set aside the product after removing it when going up to attic. I get airtight feeling after placing the product on the attic door so I think it does its job. However, I am looking for more sturdy and easy-to-handle option for my 2nd attic door.
