Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really nice machine I bought this because my wife loves coffee so I figured that it would be cool to roast our beans at home. First off, the machine is very well made and is about the size of a toaster oven. It fits nicely on the countertop and looks very nice. This is the first roaster that I have used so I went into this blind on how to roast coffee beans. For the most part it is easy to use as long as you follow the directions. It is not a set and forget machine from my experience. It is more of an art than you would think. You do not have but about a minute in between the first and second crack of the bean. You have to act quickly after the second crack or you will ruin the beans and turn them into charcoal. I have used it a few times since and I am getting more used to the timing of the cracks and making some better coffee. I would definitely recommend this machine if you would like to roast your own beans. It looks to be very well made and should last many years. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful roaster for coffee lovers This Behmor roaster works great once you learn the roasting process and get the hang of things. The different settings and required steps may be overwhelming for those new to coffee roasting, it is highly advised to read the manual thoroughly and to watch tutorial videos available online as well. The many settings and options available give you the flexibility to roast beans of different origins to your preferred darkness. The large drum of the roaster allows you to roast up to 1lb at a time, but personally I like to do smaller batches to keep things fresh with a variety of beans. Coffee roasting is not something where you can set settings and walk away, it requires you to be nearby monitoring the entire process. After some trial and error with the presets, I got the roast to a lighter medium that I typically prefer. The design minimizes smoking and loose chaff but it is still recommended to roast in an area with good ventilation and possibly a fan as well. If you get the process dialed in with good quality beans, the coffee experience is taken to another level with superior taste and aroma from beans that aren't old and stale. I would definitely recommend self roasting to serious coffee lovers that love to experiment and tweak. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I May Eventually Enjoy It The Behmor 1600 Plus has so much potential, but this version isn't for me. If you read every page of the instruction manual, it almost feels like the Behmor team knew that it wasn't quite prime time. The user interface is confusing. Selecting Roast Weight totally makes sense. The next step is to select a program. After reading the manual multiple times, I'm still not completely sure what the program buttons do. Next, there are a + and - buttons for time increment. Finally, there are profiles P1-P5. What the heck are all of these things? Profiles: The manual says, "Denotes how much heat is applied to the beans." But nowhere does it tell me the temperature. Because I've used an oven before, I want to think about heat in terms of degrees, not the letters A - D. The manual tells me that I should preheat before starting a cycle. However, there's no preheat button. I have to start a cycle and stop it before it's too late! If this thing needs to preheat, please give me a preheat button. Maybe temperatures need to change during the roast cycle, maybe that's why Behmor uses letters instead of temps. If that's the case, give me some preset cycles and then let me create my own programs. It feels obvious from reading the manual that it's challenging to get this unit to do an espresso roast. Select this profile, preheat, add a few minutes, listen for second crack, etc. Maybe it would be wise to start out with the goal of achieving a good espresso or French roast and work backwards from there on the product design. The other thing that frustrated me is that the manual repeatedly refers to "new features." This entire unit is new to me. All features are new to the person reading the manual. Then manual also refers to the Rosetta Stone "C" Button Feature. The term Rosetta Stone is used as if I'm supposed to know what it means. Isn't that a language software company? It feels like the unit was built by some people who knew coffee but didn't understand user interface design. Then, the manual was written by some people who didn't have time to write, rewrite and properly edit before shipping the product. It's entirely possible that I am frustrated because of a terrible manual, but I think both the product and manual are just too confusing. Behmor team, please keep trying, but hire some folks to work on your user interfaces and manuals before making any additional investments in the product itself. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Machine! If your looking for a professional, sturdy and dependable coffee roaster then the Behmor 1600 Plus has got you covered and will not break the bank! Yes it’s dependable and I know I can rely on it and last me for years. I’m very happy with the results and how perfect my coffee is with each batch I make. I want to also state this roaster will require some of your time, but at the same time it’s going to save you’re wallet in the long run as some roasters can be upwards of thousands of dollars. This roaster is well worth its weight in gold. The manual was easy to follow and will provide some significant insight on how to get the best roast with each use. Just be sure and follow all the instructions, which aren’t all that long and we’re clearly written and easy to follow. I had no issues getting it all set up, but thankfully I had my husband to help! You’ll have to do a 1/4 pound test and the great thing about this particular roaster is there’s a ton of internet information and so many helpful videos out there for a new roaster or even an expert roaster. I feel like now I have mine “broken in” well and each roast just seems perfect. I have learned the keypad and very familiar with it now, I feel a lot better with the whole process now. The manual is your friend, for instance if you want to do a French Roast, then you’ll want to use 3/4 pound with your settings on 1 pound. Whatever you choose, you’ll have a great guide to follow. While I have not had to contact Behmor, I have read so many wonderful comments about how helpful their customer support is, this company seems to go above and beyond with their products and seems to take pride in their customer service too. Which makes me appreciate them even more, I know if I have to reach out... they’ll have my back. I also loved that the “interior” is lighted so you can actually see the process, I thought was cool. The chaff tray and drum is removable and makes for such easy clean up. The roaster doesn’t take up a huge amount of space. If you choose it’s something that would fit right on the countertop. I find my self using it often so I ended keeping it on the countertop, which also makes for a great conversation with guests. Most people will ask what it is, and want to see it in action. With that being said, coffee is always what my guest choose when I over a drink! So I don’t mind one bit to show how it works if I know their going to be spending time at my home. My coffee, always ends up with the perfect taste in each and every cup! It’s so wonderful to just roast coffee in your home, if you have guests who drink coffee, they’ll certainly be able to notice it to. Thanks so much Behmor for this outstanding roaster, I can’t even express how happy I am with my roaster, I have no complaints what so ever. I would certainly recommend! Rated 4 out of 5 by from A unique and fun way to experience coffee. What a fun experience! This is my first time roasting. I would recommend you read the manual from front to back thoroughly, I also watched a bunch of youtube videos to get a better idea. My first time using it I roasted 1/4 pound as they suggested, some of the best coffee I have ever had. The machine does an ok good job of smoke control, but if you go to second crack, it does start putting out a little smoke. It was enough to set off the fire alarm in my home. It does seem that using the B profile that the second crack comes pretty fast. When I did it manually, I would bring the heat down at the first crack which slowed the progression. Using the roaster, there is some residual heat in the cooling process. This is another reason to be present when roasting. This machine is very well built and works great. You need to understand the process fully before using, this is not a set and forget machine, if you run it properly it produces a great coffee experience. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and fun to use This is a fun roaster to use. This is my first time to home-roast coffee and while the instruction manual was a bit daunting (and yes you need to read it cover to cover!), the machine itself is pretty simple to operate. There is a learning curve to figure out what settings and time is best for different kinds of beans, but that's part of the fun-- its similar to broiling in the oven in that you go from totally not done to overdone in a very short window of time so you have to be paying constant attention. The machine roasts 1/4, 1/2 or 1 lb of coffee at a time, and you have to wait an hour between uses, so it is not for you if you need to do large quantities, but perfect for the home roaster or occasional gifter. A roast cycle takes from 8 to 20 minutes but you have to be present and watching the whole time (I did set off the smoke detector on my first try!). If you're looking for a fun hobby and love coffee you may really like this. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not for dark roasting This Behmor 1600 Plus Drum Coffee Roaster is a really neat machine. The instructions are very easy to follow and they will walk you through how to set up your own roasting profiles. This one actually let's you manually control the heat. In order to get an even roast, make a small batch instead if the 1 pound. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
