Do you have to attach strip right on the house?

Asked by Jules April 19, 2020

You can attach to various materials in a number of ways. Most of the time I use a strong tape, like Duct Tape, and attach it to things like outdoor curtain rods or garage doors. With a long enough piece you could tie the holographic tape around something, but make sure it can withstand strong winds. Direct sunlight will deteriorate the tape making it necessary to replace down the road.

How do you attach it to the house shingles?

The a 2' string securely to the tape.. Tie the other end securely to a headed mail driven partway into the shingles. They last about a year before they lose their shine.

We put two Decoy Swans in our lake and almost immediately a Cormorant and Anhinga got on their backs. So we bought the Flash Tape Bird Deterrent and taped it on the back of the swans. It did no good at all because the birds are still hitchhiking a ride.

Birds are attracted to tape
After reseeding lawn and placing tapes on lawn it seems that the birds know when you reseed lawn by displaying tape. See picture

This stuff works great for woodpeckers. Cheap, fast & easy to install and most importantly, effective. I have tried netting, fake predators, etc. None were very effective. I recommend shorter strips (6"-12") to avoid tangling and fold-overs. Fold the end and tape it to reinforce an attachment point. I use a paper clip and tie a short piece of thread. I then attach the thread using a paper clip or tie it to a nearby branch tip. The tape spins and flutters in the slightest breeze. Sunlight reflecting off the tape scares the birds away.

one roll of 150 ft. L x 2 in. W Holographic Flash Tape Bird Deterrent
To keep any birds away from nests in the eaves, downspouts under the eaves, under the umbrellas, to keep birds away from my deck from all those poopings on the deck floors, patio tables/chairs. Also, to keep any chipmunks, squirrels rabbits from my yard as they destruct about everything in my yard, foundation/driveway. I cut several different lengths of the flash tapes to tape over. They were strong. The breezing winds had them moving different positions nicely while the sun reflected on holographic flashing everywhere during the breezing winds. Pretty colors reflections from sun. I had those flashing tapes for 2 weeks and it did not work to scare birds, chipmunks. They still enjoyed my yards as if those flashing tapes were nothing to them. But we did enjoy pretty flashing reflections in the motion outside.

Good Value
Bird-B-Gone Flash Tape is a interesting product, scare critters away. It says to cut the Flash Tape into 2 foot and 3 foot length, Twist one end of the flash tape and attach string or twine to the twisted end. This will assure maximum rotation and reflection when flash tape is attached to the area you wish to keep birds away from. Whoops, I went and cut mine 6 inches and 8 inches, I don't know where I got that from, but that's not what it said do. I will start over and try this again. Very simple, not hard.

Good Garden Protection Product
This iridescent tape is two inches in width and comes in a 150-foot roll, so there is plenty for use in most any home garden application. The manufacturer recommends cutting the tape in two to three foot lengths and then attaching it to six to eight inch lengths of string or twine. I used orange plastic marking tape to make it even more visible (see pictures). The tape really glints very well in sunlight (see picture), so it should really startle and frighten away most any birds. I am using this to keep away some ravens, and so far so good! I had previously used plain strips of aluminum foil, and the ravens just took the strips away! They have not been able to rip this tape apparently because it is still in place! I highly recommend this tape as an easy and relatively inexpensive method to scare away the birds.

The holographic tape is the answer to a 20 year problem. I formed chicken wire around our chimney cap and then tied the tape on around the edges in 8 places. It flutters in the slightest breeze. Now the Gila Woodpeckers don't spend their spare time beating on the metal chimney cap. We are not awakened every morning by the crazy birds. This has been a 20 year nuisance. The next place I used it is on our very long front porch that is a summertime haven for all manner of local birds. This is where they get out of the Arizona sun and heat in the afternoon. The volume of poop requires daily sweeping and often times washing. No more. Tape is secured to potted cacti and the pull chain on a ceiling fan. In cool weather I will remove the porch tape. GREAT PRODUCT!!!
