60 in. x 10 in. Midgard Wood Cap-Shelf Mantel

Solid wood unit. It arrived well packed and undamaged. It is easy to mount as you can see and is all solid wood as opposed to furniture board or other. We just moved so I am planning out my basement and thought about putting it down there but I may move it later. That is possible with this easy mount design. I am pleased with the quality, design, and visual asthetics.

The Mantel is not as nice in person as it looked online. It was a little be large for our fireplace so we decided to use it as a shelf in the garage. I'm probably going to add some angle brackets as it doesn't seem sturdy enough for this application. It's hallow yet still has some weight to it. The quality is a bit more rustic so that was another determining factor to not use it in the main house over the fireplace. It probably needs a better finish so that might still be possible down the road Installation is pretty easy as it uses a cleat system. Two screws in the garage on the studs seem to do the trick but again it will need more support to use it as a shelf.

The wood mantel by Bjorn is an excellent touch of old school added to my fireplace. The lack of color in the room caused me to pick this up! Installation was fairly straightforward. I only had 2 studs that I could attach to so I ended up getting some in wall anchors to attach the other 2 screws. Do not skimp on making sure you are in studs. The shelf is made of real wood and can easily fall if not supported!

I've been looking for a nice shelf for my smallish living room that looked nice and wasn't just a cheap piece of wood. I decided to try this mantle instead of a regular shelf. This was bigger and looks a lot nicer than a regular shelf. It's regular wood all the way through and not just a thin layer of wood on top of mdf. It was fairly easy to hang. You just mount a bracket and then lay the mantle on top of it. It can easily be removed as well if you want to sand or clean it up.

At 60 inches wide, this mantel fits larger fireplaces. It is made to be used on a large facade around 6 feet across. It is made of full length single pieces of 3/4 inch thick boards. The "block" illusion comes from the surface distressing, which looks like a rough grinder was run across the surface. The wood is Alder, and the weight is fairly light at just under 20 lbs. It is 9-3/4 inch front-back, 6 inches top edge to bottom edge. The individual pieces and ends are glued together, and pocket holes are drilled for screws. Instead of actual wood screws, the manufacturer used drywall screws. Mounting is accomplished with an external wedge bar (cleat). The cleat is mounted to the fireplace, and the mantel simply hangs on the cleat. The manufacturer only includes drywall screws for mounting, which I find odd, since fireplaces are usually brick or stone. The base of the cleat is also not wide enough to span a mortar joint, so you have to drill into the brick. Mounting to brick is stronger than the mortar, but I don't want holes in my bricks, and this mantel is light enough to be mounted with mortar anchors. From a distance, it looks nice. The color is way lighter than the pictures though, like a light brown toast color, definitely not the dark mohagany depicted. Up close it is very apparent that this is not made from an old piece of wood, and to me it looks like a pine box. It really didn't end up being as nice as I thought, as it doesn't have that real look of a piece of old lumber, and the use of drywall screws left me wondering about quality. But it is functional, and it does fit in with a lot of decor depending on your style. Country of origin is China.

This 60 in. x 10 in. Midgard Wood Cap-Shelf Mantel works very well above the couch in our basement TV room. The original plan was to mount it above our fireplace in our living room, but it just didn't look quite right there. The install would have been quite hard with all of the modifications I would have had to do and I would have had to sand, stain and finish it to make it look right. So instead of going through all of that, or just giving up on it altogether, we decided to mount it downstairs. We have wanted a floating shelf above the couch for a long time and it turns out this is the perfect size and finish for that project. The install was fairly simple. We had to measure and mark the wall to get the right height, level and center point. Next, we had to find the wall studs and attach the cleat with the included screws. Then we just hung the mantle on the cleat and secured it with a single screw in through the top of the mantle into the cleat. It felt very sturdy when completed. I have used cleats for hanging on a few other projects that I have done, some quite heavy, and I feel very confident it will hold fast for many years. Using the cleats makes it easy to get it level and centered because you are handling one small piece of wood rather than a large, heavy object and if you ever decide to move it, you will be able to without a lot of trouble and the repair to the wall where it was would be minimal. We really like the final look with mementos and pictures added, which we will probably change numerous times until we get something that works for us. We are very happy with this serendipitous fit this mantle has provided and that has turned it into a beautiful floating shelf where one was needed.

The Bjorn Woodworks 60 in. x 10 in. Midgard Wood Cap-Shelf Mantel, Distressed/ Stained/ and Glazed IS HUGE!!!! It is so well made, and definitely sturdy with its thickness - however - it is a massive shelf mantel. It is not meant to sit tall - meaning - that tall side is what drills into the wall so the mantel itself sits so far out from the wall. This piece is beautiful and definitely an eye-stopper, but make measurements and prepare an entire wall - this mantel and size demands space. It sits so far out from the wall we even attempted to place it above our fireplace (under our huge dog painting - and it still sits out from the purposeful dip in our wall (see pic)

Works for a mantle but the color was no where near what was pictured online. More orange. Will need to sand and then stain it to get what I really want. Recommend only if you want color as posted in my pic or are willing to sand and stain.

Love this! We don't have a fireplace with a mantle but this can also double as a beautifully deep, large floating shelf, which is what we'll be using it for. The wood is solid without being cumbersome or massively heavy. The construction is very nice, with seamless joints and corners. It comes ready to be installed as-is, and will definitely bring a rustic but sophisticated touch to our walls.

This is a "floating" shelf that is 60 inches wide by 10 inches deep and 6 inches tall. It comes with a cleat to mount to wall studs and then hang the shelf on it giving the shelf the appearance of"floating" on the wall. The shelf weighs about 21 1/2 pounds and because of its weight and length needs 2 people to safely hang it on a wall. It is made in the USA by Bjorn Woodworks and is large enough to make a very nice architectural mantle for a fireplace. It comes with the screws and cleat to mount the shelf to a wall with studs, but requires additional hardware not included if it is mounted to a masonry wall. The shelf was priced at about $230 in December of 2019 and is an attractive and simple shelf with a distressed and natural wood look that is stained and lightly glazed. We like the effect and would recommend this shelf.
