60 in. x 6 in. Shipwreck Wood Cap-Shelf Mantel

The Mantel looks amazing and it arrived quickly to my doorstep but there should be three items in the box. The mantel, the board that it attaches to, and screws. I only received two. The board that attaches to the wall was not included in the box. The weird part was there was packing inside the mantel that i can only believe was used to wrap the board prior to placing it inside the mantel for shipping, but no board. Home Depot called but no answer so i just moved ahead and made my own. Would have been 5 stars because it really looks good.

I do recommend this mantle, as long as you like the distressed look quite a bit. This is more distressed than I would prefer, but you may love it. The pics I've included give a good look at the distress level. The stain color and finish are very nice. A beautiful dark brown. It includes a quality install manual, and a angled cut strut that you screw into the wall to support the mantle. Screws are included as well. I was a little disappointed to see where it was puttied, and the stain did not take or cover it. I've included a pic of the mantle where I've circled the visible putty. Small areas so not horrible, but should not have slipped thru quality control. Not a solid beam. 3/4"-1" boards used to build, so hollow, but very solid. There is also a knot hole that goes thru the mantle board into the mount cavity. Luckily it's on the bottom of the mantle, so not visible, unless you look for it. I'm changing my fireplace in a few months, so I have not had the opportunity to install, but it looks like a straight forward process.

The detail on this shipwreck mantel is very impressive. It adds a lot of character and really gives the "shipwreck" feel. The color is gorgeous and the size was perfect for my use. I don't have a fireplace, but I wanted something akin to a floating shelf and this is such a statement piece. The wood is hollow inside, but had a slant that holds the shelf sturdy. It is not too heavyweight so I am not too worried hanging it onto the wall with no other support. It feels like it will hold a good amount of items. On my photo, I have not yet installed it since i am still deciding on the placement, but I put a temporary flower pot on it and I love the look of it. I would imagine it look stunning over a fireplace. Would recommend!

I'll preface by saying that this was not a conventional installation - In 100+ year old homes, hardly anything is conventional. Our home has a beautiful stone double fireplace which we enjoy. The current mantel is a long, big piece of stone over the first fireplace that is impressive but ultimately cold and harsh. We always craved some warmth and natural tones on the stone and brainstormed ways to make the fireplace cozier and more inviting. This mantel is hallow and intended for new construction homes where there are wood studs surrounding a fireplace opening - or to use as a floating shelf. The hardware and instructions that come with it all but dictate this. So, if you have stone or brick as most older homes will have, then you need to go get masonry screws and/or fudge things a bit (like I did.) All this being said, the hollow construction was perfect as the existing stone mantel slid right in the 'box' of the Bjorn Mantel. I had to take off the cleat screwed into the mantel. Through some shimming and some strategic finishing screws, the mantel is solidly installed and looks great! Overall, a nice product and saved me a lot of effort cutting and staining my own mantel 'wrap.' As a mantel installed as intended, it couldn't be easier for someone to put up. It's clever in its simplicity and while some may balk at the price, it's reasonable considering the tools/material and time required to put something like this together. I have the former but not the latter, otherwise I would and could build this myself. This was a welcome relief to find and retrofit for my needs. Thanks!

I used this as a floating shelf and I do like the overall look of it, the fiinish, color and size is perfect. But I think the distress markings look a bit unnatural, the cuts/scrapes are deep and defined where I think they should have been lighter to create a more natural appearance. The construction of the mantel is basically a hollow box constructed of 3/4" thick pieces of wood joined with pocket screws, The hollow construction makes it lightweight and easy to manage and install, especially by yourself. A solid piece of wood this size would be difficult to ship and hang. The installation is pretty easy, it hangs on a angled wood cleat thats included. Just a drill and level is needed. I went with 2 screws on top, make sure you predrill everything and its a pretty strong finished product. Don't get me wrong I like the mantel itself but currently priced at $250 makes it a pretty poor value, I think its worth a lot less in my opinion.

This is a gorgeous addition to my living room! Very well built, extremely solid with no shortcuts. I'm a big fan of the distressed wood look, faux or not. Installation couldn't be easier, just make sure you are screwing into studs, it's very heavy. The inside is hollow, so you can actually hide some valuables inside. The shelf itself is 9" deep to display your favorite things!

I used this to update a fireplace where I just added stacked stone to the ceiling. It is perfect, matches my other furniture pieces like it was made for it. Beautiful and rich in color. My only issue with this item is hanging it. The instructions are a little too vague and the hanging board they sent was not wide enough to match where to place the screws in the piece on the wall. But I figured it out and it turned out amazing. I chose a length that gave a wrap around look versus the trendy short mantle.

For several years I have been looking for a suitable mantle for my man cave. As you can see from the picture I needed something with a rustic look to go with the Western decor. I ran across this one from Bjorn Woodworks and knew I had found the one I was searching for. It is fairly lightweight so it won't pull out from the block walls. The cleat used for hanging the mantle is simple to use and doesn't take long to put up. I do recommend that you watch the video on the Home Depot website for some really excellent hints that are not in the installation manual.

The Bjorn 60" w x 6" h x 10" d is a very nice piece of " real" Knotty Alder Wood. The wood is Pre stained and sealed and as you can see from the included pictures matches the existing furniture nicely. While this is marketed as a "Mantel" I had another idea, a wide deep floating shelf. Since this will be holding more weight, installing, securing and spacing the cleat became the biggest issue. It will be a TV/cable box floating shelf. When finished the mantel will be at the same height as the Armoire to the right, se pic. I will install a new receptacle slightly above the top of the mantel. Since I am going to all this trouble I decided to paint the room too. Don't let this scare you, if you are just thinking of adding this as a simple over the fireplace mantel that only holds very little weight check out the installation/assembly section under "info and guides" on the HD website. Gorgeous! Looks perfectly aged and weathered. The wood markings are very unique. The color of the finish works with just about any other wood or decor. It's very solidly constructed and was easy to hang with the included cleat (and a level and drill). It looks amazing in my boho living area as a focal point shelf that will hold keepsakes and artwork. Love this!
