42 in. Hex Plug Style Segmented Aluminum Anode Rod

Product Overview

Every water heater has an anode rod. Water corrodes the inside of steel tank water heaters. The anode rod sacrifices itself to protect the tank. As it deteriorates it should be replaced, or the tank will corrode and eventually leak. Check your anode rod every 2 year as the anode rod's life depends on a few variables, including water quality, tank use, water temperature, and tank quality. The Water Heater Smart Blue Lightning anode rod will help avoid early tank failure. The segmented design allows for replacement in tight spaces. The anode rod can be cut in length to fit short water heaters. The blue lightning rod is made of environmentally-friendly aluminum, with durable, corrosion-resistant, stainless steel links.

I had the same problem several months ago. Your current anode rode is probably for city water, you being on a well is different, well water has a bacteria in it, (which is harmless), but once heated will ignite the bacteria, which causes the rotten egg smell. Change your anode rode to a aluminum/zinc anode rode and this will solve your problem. Changing the rod is very easy. Hope this helps.

The magnesium rod is fine for city water, but if you are on well water then use the aluminum/zinc rod and the water will not smell like rotten egges.

This fit my water heater, and was easy to install. The flexible segments help with that. Otherwise everything was standard sizes. I'll check it in 5 years, to see how well it really performed. Looking forward to squeezing a few more years out of my water heater.

Pretty easy to install. You'll need a 1 1/6" socket. I recommend using an impact wrench to remove the old one. This will prolong your heater's life. Turn heater dial to pilot, shut off cold water, open hot water faucet in kitchen to remove pressure. Drain 3 gallons out of tank spigot, then remove and replace anode. Turn on water, shut off kitchen faucet, turn tank gas on to heat.

Easy install. The most difficult step was to remove the old Anode, which was over 10 years old. I sprayed PB Blaster on the threads several times, tapping it with a hammer and iron rod several times in-between applications of the PB Blaster. Eventually I was able to remove the Anode using a 1/2 in. drive socket with a 24 in. breaker bar. The segmented Anode design allowed me to install it without moving the tank, which had 30 in. clearance in its location. The old Anode was completely spent. Had I known about it before, I would have replaced it much sooner. I'm now going to inspect it annually.
