toro saved kids garden club
The Mohave County Master Gardeners are sponsoring and teaching an after school garden club at Cerbat elementary school in Kingman, Az. We needed to find a way to automatically water the students plants, they had planted in buckets, because the planting area was off limits during regular school hours. There is no water source we could connect to on a permanent basis. We tried several types of timers connected to a 55 gallon water drum. None would work. We thought we would have to cancel and disappoint all 25, 4th and 5th graders. Then we tried the Toro, Battery Operated Hose-End Timer (Blue Strip Drip, model 53746). It works like a charm. From the moment we attached it, the plants received water from the drip system. It has been in service for 4 weeks with no problems whatsoever. It was scheduled to be delivered in 10 days however we received the unit in 4 days. We are extremely pleased with the operation of this unit and the service we received from Home Depot. Thank you Toro for the great product.

Set timer in house and then install it
I like this timer because it serves 2 basic purposes. You can use it as a timer for a garden hose or for a drip system. I needed to design a drip line system but did not finish the design or buy all the parts. Memorial Day weekend is here and I will be away. We needed plants watered. I inserted 2 AA batteries and then waited for the start time. The next day at 5 AM, while in the house, set the frequency to 24 hours and the duration for 20 minutes. Now it was all set to go as soon as I installed it. I bought a brass manifold with a 4 hose hookup. Then attached the manifold to my hose bib. I used some Teflon tape on the male threads and then attached the garden hose. Since I had already tested the spray pattern on the watering end of the garden hose and determined where to locate the spray head, I was all set to use it. I took a picture and sent it to a neighbor and my daughter to solve their watering problem. Lou81

This was the most readily obtainable water timer for zero pressure rain barrels... but... After a year, it effectively stopped working. Even with new batteries. I've contacted the company and this has been discontinued, so Toro will not honor the warranty on it. This item has been replaced with Item # 53453

Very Good. The only battery powered timer I could find on the market which actually works with no pressure rainwater flowing out of rain barrels under gravity only. Appears to be very accurate in its timing as set by the owner.

It works as expected and it's not too loud when it operates. I'm using it to water some tropical fruit seeds I'm trying to germinate in my kitchen sink. 1 minute of water every 2 hours. (Of course I had to use some adapters to go from kitchen plumbing to hose threads.) The knobs select between discrete stops rather than adjust continuously, which is good because I know precisely which frequency or duration I'm selecting and because it's harder to accidentally nudge the knobs from their setting. Reasons to prefer this unit over the various "digital" hose timers: - this can water every 1 hours or every 2 hours, whereas the digital timers can only water as frequently as every 6 hours - this one's settings are immediately visible and accessible as knobs rather than being hidden in "setting" modes - this uses a ball valve rather than a solenoid valve, so it can switch low-pressure flow (as from a bucket or barrel)
