(What's this)
The Bonavita 5-cup coffee maker is the best. It makes the best coffee I have ever tasted and keeps it warm in its insulated brewing carafe. The manual explains the best ways to brew coffee and the reasons why. One of the features of this coffee maker is it has a optional method of of brewing coffee by pre-infusion where it wets the grounds to optimize flavor.

No nonsense coffee maker. A more time-efficient way of making roughly 5-cups of great, fresh-ground/brewed coffee than a pour-over method. This coffee maker lacks many add-on features of mass-market coffee makers but I don't mind as I like to keep it simple. Would recommend this product.

An exceptional coffee maker. . .easy to use, the perfect size and a great design (both aesthetically and functionally). The quality of the brew is an obvious improvement over any and all coffee makers I have used previously. I highly recommend the Bonavita 5-cup Coffee Maker.

(What's this)
I like this coffee maker because it produces great tasting coffee through proper brewing temperature and time. The 5 cup capacity is perfect for me and if I have more people over the 5 minute brewing time makes it easy to brew two pots. There's no hotplate that wastes electricity keeping the coffee warm. The thermal carafe keeps the coffee at a good temperature for hours. I learned about Bonavita coffee makers a few years ago while trying to figure out why making coffee at home didn't produce as good results as I wanted. So many automatic coffee makers just don't get the water hot enough or run for the correct amount of time. Bonavita was one of the few automatic coffee makers that heated the water correctly and had the correct saturation time. Other features like the larger shower head helped saturate the grounds more evenly. The coffee lovers of the internet had great things to say about the brand. Only problem was they were expensive compared to the type of coffee makers I could pick up practically anywhere. That was for the larger 8 cup version. Thankfully Bonavita came out with this smaller 5 cup version which is a more affordable option. Before getting this coffee maker I started to brew my morning coffee using a manual brewer. The results were great but it was very time consuming and I had to pay attention to it to time the brewing perfectly. I would either get inconsistent results or I'd waste time I could have used making the rest of my breakfast. Eventually I went back to the cheap drip for convenience most days. Now the Bonavita makes me a perfect cup every morning with very little fuss. It's worth reading the instructions about cleaning before use and how to make good coffee. Also note that like most coffee makers they should be cleaned and descaled every 3 months or so, depending how hard your water is. They include a packet of descaler in the box. To make great coffee, start grinding your own beans and use filtered water. (You'll still get better results if you use preground too but freshly ground will always have more flavor.) The first thing I do is pull the carafe out, remove the lid and fill it up with hot water from the tap to warm it up. I do the same with my travel mug. This helps both of them keep the coffee warmer longer. While the carafe is warming up I grind and fill the filter basket. 10 grams or 2 table spoons per cup is recommended but it's up to what you find tastes best from 1 to 2 tablespoons per cup. Then I fill the water reservoir with filtered water from a regular pitcher filter in my fridge. By now the carafe has warmed up enough and I dump out the hot water. Place the filter holder over the carafe, insert it in the coffee maker and flip the switch. After about 5 minutes the coffee is done and it turns itself off. While this is happening I'm free to do whatever else I need to do to get ready in the morning. After the coffee is done brewing I'll remove the filter basket and screw the carafe lid onto the carafe to keep it warm. The coffee will stay reasonably warm up to 4 hours in the carafe but after 2 or 3 hours the flavor starts to change and you'd want to brew a fresh pot anyway. There's not much guessing if the coffee is too old. If it's not hot enough its not fresh enough and the warmer isn't wasting electricity keeping coffee I wouldn't want to drink warm if someone forgets to turn it off in the morning. If you're using freshly ground beans there's a pre-infusion option that will help the beans degas for better extraction. Press and hold the switch for a few seconds to activate it and the regular brewing cycle will continue afterwards.

(What's this)
This 5-cup coffee maker brews quickly in about 4.5 minutes, then it shuts off. The coffee is not as hot as what I am used to, even though I pre-warm the carafe and screw on the lid immediately after brewing. I use the 5 cups of water for our 2 mugs of coffee, but pouring is messy if I try to pour without screwing the lid on first. The water comes out at about 190 degrees (I checked the temp after 5 minutes in the closed carafe, and it was 185 degrees). The carafe does keep the coffee warm for a while, but not as well as a brewer with a warming plate. While using Eight O'Clock ground coffee, I found that I had to reduce the amount by about 1/3 because it was too strong. I like that the plastic water reservoir has cup measurements on the side. The cone filter holder sits on top of the carafe for brewing and it uses a #4 cone paper filter (5 Melitta filters are included in the box). When the coffee has brewed, the filter assembly is removed and the lid is screwed on. The power cord is about 25" long. The stainless steel carafe is 5" tall and a bit over 5" wide. Although I can reach inside to clean the carafe, it may be difficult for someone with larger hands because the opening is only about 2.75". I would have liked to be able to pour "to the last drop" of coffee, but the lip inside prevents total emptying. It is recommended to descale the unit with Full Circle descaling powder after 100 brew cycles or once every 3 months. One packet of descaling powder is included for the first cleaning. Using vinegar is not recommended. I do like that the water-sprinkling pattern varies to evenly moisten the grounds. There is also an option to use a pre-infusion mode that pre-moistens freshly roasted coffee. This coffee maker has a limited 2-year warranty.

(What's this)
The Bonavita 5 cup Coffee Brewer is optimized for brewing small batches of great coffee. Sophisticated enough to extract all the flavor, yet practical enough for everyday use. It will take a little getting used to though. There is no heating element in the base – the insulated carafe takes care of keeping the coffee warm, without turning it bitter. I found it best to remove the brew basket as soon as the brew cycle is finished and replace the carafe lid – something you need to do anyway, before you can pour without spilling. A small price to pay for above average coffee.

I wasn’t impressed by this coffee maker. I’m not a fan of the two part brewing system but could get used to it. The deal breakers were it doesn’t new hot or stay hot in the carafe. It also spills when your pour.
