Questions & Answers

does this tub need mortar to level??

Asked by: mark
There is no foam pad on this tub. Also, when set, there is about a 2" or more gap. I would still dump down a bag of durabond for added protection. You get a 300 pounder in there, and the porcelain will flex and develop cracks, then rust. I like the old, non-sandable durabond in the brown bag, not the "lite" for this application. Staple down some roofing felt first, so that the next guy doesn't curse your name.

is there a drain kit for this tub/

i am replacing a standard tub with this one. Is there a way to make sure the drain lines up to the drain pipe sice its shorter?
Asked by: mark hanson
you can buy a PVC trap kit where you cut and glue 1 1/2" PVC to make a tub drain. You can extend the drain to your current trap this way. It's actually better as you don't have any mechanical connections (slip joints).

We bought a very, very small house that had what looked like half of a bathtub in it that was all rusty and had a constant water drip. We knew we were going to rip it out of there and put in a standing shower as space is so limited in this bathroom. One day looking on line at Home Depot, I put in the dimensions of the space we had to see what showers would fit and the Honolulu tub popped up. I was amazed it was the same size as the one we just junked. Actually I am a smaller person and I can sit comfortably in it. I just love it. Not only did we buy the tub, we also bought the surround wall and it all went in like clockwork. Nothing better than a hot soak after a hard day of work!

We wanted to put a tub rather than just a shower for building value retention. The first tub was chipped and had to be sent back. The second tub was still chipped but could be cover with tile. Not the best option as steel can rust where the metal is exposed. We covered the chipped area with silicone to head off any rusting problem down the road. When it was installed it was found to be un-level in each corner and the back wall length was arched up. There also was not enough clearance on the drain end to install the plumbing so part of the wall had to be cut to provide the clearance. If I ordered another I would expect the same. But for the price and to get the smaller size it is worth a little extra work to get it fitted.

Side flanges and back flange were not bent to 90 degrees increasing length by 3/4" and width by almost 1/2". Couldn't straighten because porcelain would chip. Also had a dime size chipped porcelain discovered after I got home. I'll repair porcelain myself because waiting two weeks for replacement would not work for me. I installed with difficulty and I am a skilled remodeler. Poor quality control and improperly bent flanges made it difficult to install tub surround. Will work in my rental but fully expect it will not last. Next time I'll not by a Bootz. Disappointing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 48" tub for low price :) Installed by professional plumber; no problems. They said it was average quality. The bottom is gritty which is bad attempt at non-skid. But other than that, it's a 48" tub that is only 27" wide for a good price. We used it to convert a half bath to a full. We ordered it to arrive at the local Home Depot store; no shipping charge. First one we got home and it had enamel missing; returned it no problem. Second one the store opened the box and it was fine. We stored it in garage for 2 months until time to install and no more enamel fell off; think it was shipping damage on the 1st one. Pic is from unfinished project, but you can see the tub was fine.

Came back, picked up week later. Out of town for week, tore apart bathroom ,tub too short ! Had to buy one in store & make fit. Then 3 days later to install walls, they didn't work either. No wall surround specified for that tub. Told had to do tile... not. Purchased in store plastic adhesable walls & back. Don't think we'll be ordering on line again ! :(

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Chipped and yellowish I wish I had the choice to chose any other tub but I needed a 46inch tub and this is was my only choice. Many people noted that the tub often comes chipped and that is true, so you should order 2 just in case and take the one that is less damaged.. The color of the tub isn't clear white but a cream yellowish color that doesn't match my toilet and vanity... Avoid this product if you can.
