could this provide hot water for a small shower insert for an outdoor shower?
Asked by: swo
Yes, but with only 2.5 gallons you will have to take a "Navy" shower, where you get wet in a few seconds, turn off the water, soap up, then turn on the water again to rinse off. 2.5 gallons will probably run through a shower in about a minute or so.

Can I use this or something like this on a hot tub?
Asked by: Mark1974
This could only work if you have a pump to pull water out of the hot tub to run through the heater. You would need something to restrict the return line to the tub to keep pressure on the heater. It's only about 5000 BTU so it will still take hours to heat a hot tub of water. Your hot tub should be insulated, and you can get an insulated cover for it. It takes an hour to raise the temperature one degree because its internal heater is only meant to maintain temp, not to heat a tubful of water when you want to use it.

We bought this to supply hot water to our kitchen sink which is far from our house water heater. We want at least ~120F water for washing dishes. At the factory setting the water heater supplied 120F water just after a heating cycle as indicated by the light on the unit. However after 3 hours with no call for hot water the unit supplied 102F water, too cold to wash dishes (after one hour the water temperature was down to 113F and 2 hour 107F). We increased the set temperature to 134F but after 2 hours it was down to 128F, 4 hours 120F and 5.5 hours 112F (again too cold). The unit will finally reheat the water somewhere between 112F and 109F back up to 134F. So, given the random times we want to wash dishes relative to the unit's heating cycles, we could get sub-temperature water - not good enough, we will be returning the unit. This was a second try. We had a previous unit that behaved the same and Bosch said they thought that unit was malfunctioning and should be returned.

We installed 4 of these plus a 5 gallon unit, and had the following discoveries: do NOT use regular NPT fittings with PTFE tape. We tried on all 5, and only 1 had no issues with leaks on either port. Somehow, the threads are either cut large (less taper than standard NPT so starting diameter is off), has a poor lead-in (can only get 1-2 turns by hand before it binds up), or the material is wrong (keep getting chips and dusting from brand new units), but either way, our best success was using fittings that have a rubber interface (o-ring or conical washer) to seal to the tube we are connecting to. Everything else would leak to a greater or lesser extent. I would hope Bosch would figure out the reason for the binding up and/or the poor integration with off-the-shelf valves and fittings, but we wasted many brand new fittings and many man-hours trying to keep the installed system from leaking.

They'd run water for a good three minutes before it'd even get warm. I saw a bunch of YouTube videos about point-of-use electric water heaters and thought this could be our solution. I ordered it online and picked it up at the local Home Depot. It arrived quickly, and the crew there helped me get all the right hoses and such to hook it up. I unboxed it and tried to fit it under the vanity. No dice! Solution? One of my boy's room's closet was right on the other side of the wall. I drilled a couple holes and bought some longer hoses. Then added a GFCI outlet inside the closet. The install was pretty simple, once I figured that out. Took about two hours and looks great. It's been a few weeks and we all love having hot water in four seconds now. I'd highly recommend this unit.

It failed last week and flooded our upstairs bathroom. Could not return to the local Home Depot as it was purchased on line. Several calls to Bosch and was told the 6 year warranty would not be honored as the anode had gone bad. Label on the unit says to check the anode every two years. Instruction manual says every year, therefore no warranty coverage. The offered to sell a replacement for $75 but forgot to ship it after taking our credit card info. Still waiting. Most disappointing is that they would design an appliance where the failure mode is a full on leak. Engineering fail.

Keep in mind, however, that you MUST change the anode every 6 to 9 months! Even with that, it will only last about 9 to 10 years. This is my third one, but I can't be without it.

I've used this now for three months, and it's a cute little unit, fits under the sink nicely, but it's not real functional. When I took it out of the box, it was missing the "Bosch" label for the front. It's not a big deal, but it's brand new and I wanted a finished looking unit. I called the customer service for Bosch, and they agreed to send me one... it never came. As far as the function goes, the thermostat has too wide a range on it. If it sits for a while, the water that comes out is only just above warm. After it kicks on, it heats just fine. You have to catch it at the right time if you actually want hot water.

Replaced the old one that started leaking after 20 years of service. I don't expect this one to do as well with a much shorter warrantee. It is a nice looking unit if looks matter. It was super easy to hook up with flex hoses. Fill it with water, plug it in and there you are. I put a timer on it. One hour of running supplys all we need at this sink.

With the plastic water pipes used in Denver, we had to run the hot water for a minute before it came through hot to our kitchen sink. Real waste of water. Now we get instant hot. Not difficult to install. Have had it a couple of months and considering getting another for the main bathroom sink which has the same hot water delay.
