what's the distance from the horizontal laser line to the actual bottom of the unit?

The distance of the horizontal laser line of GLL30S to the bottom is approximately 1.0". For further assistance, contact us at 1-877-BOSCH99 (1-877-267-2499) from Mon-Fri 7A-7P CST.

It doesn't do offset levels!!! The photo is VERY misleading! Once you tilt it at an angle the unit will repeatedly blink, 1 sec on, 1 sec off. The photo you provide (and which is provided on the box) must have been taken during the 1 second that the level was on. It's incredibly annoying to use in this manner and basically worthless for this purpose. I am taking mine back to the store for a refund.

I think I know what you mean. The laser will have to be at the height you want. It points straight out and can't be tilted up. I'm definitely not an expert on lasers but that's what this one does. I would prefer to have this laser over the "wall one" as I feel this one is more versatile. I'd just get a ladder and use the included grabber arm to mount to one of the legs and you're good to go. Hope this helps.

Yes, you could

Is this for actually leveling or to just make a straight line?

Asked by Joe April 6, 2020

Answers

Yes, actual leveling. The one caveat is when you are doing an intentional incline such as for a staircase railing it will not be "level" but it will be straight. But when it is oriented close to normal in reference to the ground (i.e. +/- a couple of degrees from 0 degrees incline) it will auto-correct the true level because it has a gimbel inside that will release and relock in place when it detects it's within those couple of degrees of 0.

Missing the Tool Bag
Works well but beam is a bit narrow. Not a problem for handy man jobs. My only complaint is that it didn’t come with the tool bag advertised. When I purchased the product in store, I showed the store associate the product on the website and he led me to the product location. I verbally asked the store associate to confirm it came with a tool bag which he confirmed it did. Brought it home to unpack and there was no such tool bag in the box. It would be a useful piece to keep a guy organized and sane!

I bought this lazer level as it was on sale and It featured what I was looking for. So it is simple to use. It turns on with a slide switch and it auto levels projecting the lazer. If the device is more than 3 degrees out of level the lazer flashes. Pros; the device does come with a handy clamp that I have not used. However it is also fitted with a 1/4 in threaded attach point on the bottom that is compatible with any standard camera tripod, so I was able to use what I already owned for a base. Silly Con; The device came with a very small bag to store the lazer level. But it's only big enough to squeeze in just the lazer, that handy clamp is on it's own no way to store them together. I like it. I know I will use it for years. It feels well made for what I paid for it, it's not heavy duty or armored so I don't think it could handle abuse. Dosen't come with batteries, need 2 AA

Worked out great for hanging my wood rack from the ceiling! Nothing is straight/level when working in a building erected in 1838. This helped to get framework level and plumb.

Good for vertical lines, not so great otherwise
I used this primarily to mark and plan for some stripes that I wanted to paint on a bedroom wall. I was able to attach the mount to my ladder on one side of the room and align the laser on the opposite wall to be able to tape the planned stripe edges. The stripes were horizontal, so the laser worked well. The self-leveling feature is nice. I've had other lasers with a bubble level that ended up getting jarred or knocked around and the bubble and the laser were no longer lined up together. The self-leveling function is achieved with a hanging, pendulum-style light source, making it easy to get a level horizontal and vertical line. As convenient as the self-leveling feature is, the device leaves some things to be desired. Trying to get a straight line at any sort of angle does not work well. As soon as the whole unit is tilted too far left or right, the laser starts blinking as a warning that it cannot self-level. It's a long, slow blink, so it won't cause a seizure, but it's a little difficult to work with effectively and use it at an angle. The horizontal line is also considerably shorter than the vertical line. At five feet from the wall, the horizontal line is only 8 feet long, but the vertical line runs across the floor, up the wall and back across the ceiling. It's a design issue with the laser. The lens of the unit is tall, not wide, so the laser will essentially span a vertical surface, but cannot cover a very wide horizontal space.

Truly Handy Self-Leveling Laser Line Projector
I wasn't quite sure at first how useful this would be, but as I got it unpackaged, I started thinking of even more uses for it. But first back to the device itself. The device has a nice weight to it that gives the works inside the ability to find it's own level within the lighter housing, That housing has a threaded hole to accept a standard tripod mount. The level comes with a very unique articulating arm that will fasten to many things - ladder steps, bookshelves, countertops - be creative, to give you a surface on which to mount the laser level. The arm can mount on a vertical or horizontal surface because the near infinitely articulable arms on it will allow the laser device to get close enough to level to flash perfectly level horizontal and vertical lines. It's a very super device with incorporation of the vertical and horizontal lines projection, and the unique base that can attach just about anywhere and give you a stable place from which to shoot your lines. I strongly recommend this laser level!

Cool Design and Function
This is a very cool laser level. The basic design is similar to a bird cage swing. The laser hangs from inside the case, this gives the laser some room to self level. The laser can be out of level up to 4 degrees in any direction but it still gives true level and plum lines. If you're out of level or plum more than the 4 degrees the laser flashes letting you know it needs to be set closer to level. The laser can be setup on most surfaces, with the included clamp and swivel. The clamp lets you secure the laser to a board or pipe, almost any surface can be used to clamp too. The clamps swivels allows the laser to be leveled once the clamp is secured in place. I set the laser up on a table and shot down a hallway to see how accurate the level and plum lines are. I found that this little laser is dead on in both level and plum at the advertised 30'. The laser lines are bright enough to be easily seen indoors and away from direct sunlight (See Photos). This is a great little laser that is super easy to use. The included clamping system makes setup a snap. Highly recommend this laser due to its ease of setup, use and accuracy. And the laser comes with a nice storage pouch.

Good consumer grade laser level with a neat difference
Bosch makes some really great laser levels, this looks like it's on the lower end and missing some features that are on some of their more expensive laser levels. You only get a cross hair pattern and it takes some time for the laser to settle because there doesn't seem to be any dampening like on other units. Plus it's not as accurate as some of their other levels. This one is accurate to 5/16" up to 30 ft and one of their more expensive ones is accurate to 1/8" at 30 ft. The range is only 30 feet compared to 300 on some of Bosch's other models. The amount of light in the room will be a factor. Even at 10' the project line seems a bit thick so just be consistent with which edge of the line you're referencing. Depending on the type of uses you have for it this model can save you money and it's very well made. If you need to do something like layout a chair rail, line up outlets, mark out cabinets in smaller rooms this can work well. If you need a very accurate way to paint a level stripe on a gymnasium wall, this might not be for you. Just keep that in mind. Unlike other laser levels I've used that have a 3 way switch for on, off and lock this one only has a 2 way switch for on and off. None of the laser levels I've seen level from any position, you have to get them a bit close and then they level themselves. If you just want to project a line on a wall that's not level you'd switch it to lock and point it anywhere you want. If you don't switch them to lock the ones I've used will not even display cross hairs. The Bosch GLL 30 works differently. When it's close to level it will level itself. When it's not close to level it still projects a line but it will blink on and off (2 seconds each) to let you know it can't level itself. I find that makes it easier to level without the aid of an external bubble level. I can still project a line that's not level as long as it's outside the range where it tries to level itself. Not a big drawback since it's rare you want to lay something out almost level but not compared to how often you'll want to layout something either level or completely not level. You will have to deal with the blinking when doing anything off level though. Quality is good and I like the clamp. It's a little slower to use until you get used to it but it has rubber over the grips to protect what you clamp it to and it can clamp on 2x lumber as well as round pipes or tubes. The best way to use the clamp is to use one hand to compress the spring jaws of the clamp until it's tight up against the surface and then use a finger from your other hand to spin the knob. Can even do it with a finger from the same hand. Just need to give it a good flick so it spins on it's own. Makes the clamp pretty fast to use that way. Same thing when you're trying to loosen the clamp. Bring the jaws in with your hand to take tension off the screw and then the knob spins very fast. Ideally you should get a nice tripod to mount it on. There's a standard 1/4"-20 threaded insert on the bottom that will fit most tripods. On a tripod you can easily raise or lower the height to where you want it faster. If you want the quality of a Bosch laser level but can live without some of the features in the more expensive laser levels, this is a good choice. If you plan on using it often though invest in a good tripod too. Just try to keep the face of the level parallel to the surface you're projecting it on, mark where on the wall you want the line to be (34.5" above the high spot in the floor for base kitchen cabinets as an example) then project the beam so it hits that mark and make sure it's not blinking.
