Worst bit that I have ever used.
Barely got through 8x8 on the first hole It will not clear the shaven as you drill. On the second hole it bound up could not even reverse out . grab my old Erwin bit and went right through the piling.

(What's this)
Just the dimensions on this thing are impressive. It's heavy, long and sturdy. It does a great job of drilling through material, as long as you have a drill that can handle the size of the shank and the power to drive it through the necessary material. I have used it in two different cordless drills. A 1/2" chuck is required, as that was barely large enough to fit the hex shank. My battery was near to dead in one of my drills, and the drill could not drive this auger. I grabbed a different drill with a fresh battery and it was able to do the job. It's a lot of metal to drilling through material and it takes some power to get it done. However, if you need the distance / length, this is a great tool for the job. I kept the packaging for it in order to store it. There is a hole in the top that hangs on my pegboard nicely.

(What's this)
I used this bit recently to drill blindly through 2 layers of tongue & groove 1/2" pine wood and a layer of 1/2" drywall. I used an older 1/3 HP electric Skil drill which was the only drill I had available with a chuck large enough to accommodate the bit shank. I struggled to drill the hole, and the torque from the drill made it difficult to grip, as the bit was binding against the material. Admittedly, because I was in tight quarters I had to drill at a slight angle. Still, I was expecting this new bit to cut through the pine with ease. No such luck. I needed to resort to smaller paddle bits to drill some initial holes before I could finish the job with this bit. This is a heavy duty product, obviously very well made. However, it would probably work best with a 1/2 HP electric drill equipped with a side handle, to manage the incredible torque that is generated. If your job doesn't allow you to get behind the drill to apply pressure, you may have difficulty getting the job done safely. Since my holes were drilled blind, I am uncertain whether I encountered any hidden nails. If I did, this drill went right through them. The bit is packaged in a hard plastic, re-usable container (see picture), with a cover that screws on securely, providing a handy storage device that can be hung from a hook or nail.

This bit was much easier to use than I thought it would be. I found that if you just anticipate your end point and stay focused throughout the cut. Use very little pressure and it is a breeze to use! Works well on Tigerwood without splitting or chipping.

Heavy bit for heavy drilling...

Bosch 1 x 17 inch Auger drill bit. (SKU NKLT16 ) from Home Depot. This product was supplied by Home Depot through the SEEDs evaluation program. This a large, long heavily constructed drill bit. It is intended for heavy wood drilling through large thick material, that might have hidden nails or screws. The vendor says that this bit design is intended to withstand repeated contacts with nails hidden in wood. Nails, screws and metal material can destroy most wood bits if they should come into contact with the bit during drilling. I did not attempted to drill into nail infested materials just to see how well the bit would stand up to nails impacts. Initial impressions, the bit is large, very solid, and has uniquely shaped cutting surfaces. (See image of the bit’s tip) The bit is 17.5” long, and weighs 21 oz. The drill attachment end has a 0.45” hex flat surface to provide slip free gripping when chucked in the driving drill. (See image of the chuck-end of the bit). The bit comes packaged in individual, plastic case designed to store it, a nice feature. This bit requires a half inch capable chuck and a capable drill to provide the torque to turn it. Most battery powered half inch hand drills will not have the torque to handle this bit. A full size, half inch or larger, AC powered drill will be needed. This is a low speed drill bit, 200 to 400 RPM or so at most. A drill press set on a very low speed and a securely clamped work material would be another way to use this bit. At the tip there is tapered, threaded point similar to hand turned augers. The lead-in screw threads of the tip helps guide and pull the cutting flutes into the wood to shear away the large chips of wood. The bit cuts quite well and will bore through heavy materials. If you need to drill one inch holes through six inch timbers, or just through two inch framing for running wiring or pipes this is a bit for the job. The length allows you to drill through thick materials, and the sturdy construction prevents it from bending or breaking. For heavy drilling through most wood materials this bit should handle the job.

If you are hear, I don't need to tell you a one inch 17" long bit is a monster. Chances are if you need a bit this size, you're probably driving it through a wall blind at some point. I tested out their "nail killer" claim, and it chewed cut right through a penny nail I drove through a couple 4x4 pieces of PT wood. Pretty impressive. I'm sure its better for the bit to not cut nails, so avoid them if you can. I plan to use my bit on stucco exterior walls, and you never know what nails or screening may be underneath. I'm glad to have a bit that can take it! Make sure you have a really heavy drill too. I used a very old Milwaukee 1/2" drill (you need a large drill for this bit.) And it had a hard time pushing the bit through 8" of wood.
