Questions & Answers

What size pilot hole needed for this bit?

Asked by: Allen
Dear Bosch, You say you don't need to drill a pilot hole but the directions on the back of the package for this bit reads as follows...."Drill pilot hole, place centering tip in pilot hole and start drilling at low RPM. A little confusing don't you think?

Need to drill a hole in a log. The bit doesn't seem sharp enough, keeps getting caught. Is this the correct bit?

Asked by: Kelly
I tried 3 times at different locations to drill through a spruce beam. First with a cordless and then with a Dewalt corded drill. Each time the bit jammed going into the hole, I think the little wings on the end of the spade were working against me. I've used cheapies without that feature with no problems. Going back to Home Depot to see what else they have to make a 1" hole.

Plastic bucket

Would this cleanly drill through the bottom of one of the home depot 5 gal buckets?
Asked by: Snicker1979
I have not tried it for that, but with the sharp tips to do the initial cutting, I expect it would do that task about as good, or better, than anything else.

I have a large number of short and long auger bits, and I prefer using them. But they can be hard to keep sharp, especially when drilling in wood with nails. Their screw end either gets dull, making them close to worthless, or it gets filled with hardened wood fibers and acts the same way. They also are quite expensive. This bit is beefy as spade bits go, has all of the screw-capabilities of the auger bit, and the drawbacks as well, while being a spade bit - light and much less expensive. A really nice feature is that it locks in my impact driver, and when I had multiple joists to drill through I ran back to Home Depot and got an extension that also locked into the impact driver. It cut through three 2x thicknesses with no problem. I was impressed enough to go back and buy the set of these, but being spade bits I still will not expect from them what I expect from the auger bits, hence the four-star rating - I'm one who believes five-stars is not just a feel-good thing but should be reserved only for the finest. But as spade bits go this is the best I have used

I needed to put a flat bottom 8" deep hole in a the side of a green 10" Holly log to turn it into a flag stand. I first looked at the Forstner bits, but they were a little pricey. I thought the flat spade bit might make a non-round hole, but the sexy curves and sharp tips on the Bosch bit convinced me to give it a chance. Not knowing what would happen and not knowing how long the bit would last, I bought two. I started with a 1/8" X 2" deep pilot hole to help get the bit going straight, but after that I relied on the screw in the center of the bit. The bit went thru the tree like butter, using a 1/2" drive Ryobi 18-v hand drill with a 4 Amp battery pack. I kept the speed low and allowed the screw tip to pull the bit into the wood, per instructions. I had to reverse it several times to clear the chips, and it was a bit tricky to keep it from biting into the sides of the hole. In order to get to the desired depth (It could go 4" deep as-built), I used a 6" X 1/4 hex extension, which worked well with no difficulty. Thankfully, the bit produced a straight round hole despite several operator opportunities to screw it up, such as backing it out to clear the chips, then trying to find the pilot hole again. When I finished, the bit still looked like new. It easily exceeded my expectations.

Seriously, though, the spade bit was the perfect size I needed for a specific task, and made a hole almost as clean as a Forstner (I was drilling into pine). It also filled a void among my spade bits, i.e., 1 1/4" wide.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bit is too aggressive for drilling large holes. The "screw"... Bit is too aggressive for drilling large holes. The "screw" tip tends to dig into the wood not allowing you to control the force you want to use thereby ripping too much of the sides of the hole. Also because of this, you need a drill with some torque for the bit will get stuck in the hole if not turning fast enough.

Very effective getting through 1" pine plank but not necessarily a fine woodworking tool. It's operation is not so much knife through butter as it is wolverine on a deer carcass.
