Asked by: alangski
Alangski, This part number T149 is now carried at your local Home Depot and on homedepot.com under a new part number HDX149. Same great quality tool just under a different brand.

Customer Reviews

Steel Strainer Locknut Wrench is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely needed for a drain replacement This specialty tool saved a great deal of frustration when fixing a leaky kitchen sink drain in which the rubber seal had warped. This is designed to lock easily on the locknut, which is too large even for an adjustable wrench or pipewrench to get a decent grip on. Be sure to get the corresponding P.O. Plug Wrench to hold the strainer in place from the top of the sink, as well, to avoid driving yourself crazy trying to make do with pliers or a screwdriver. Another tip: The very helplful Home Depot associate strongly advised using silicone for the upper sink/strainer steel, even though many sites recommend the cheaper alternative of plumber's putty.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent tool This is a decent tool, however, it makes one handed operation very difficult.. I would think it a bit better if the handle/arm interface was tight. That you would have to actually move it, rather than it being floppy...and flopping off the nut constantly...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does the job but design is not ideal This tool does the job but I agree with SirBreaksALot. Because the pivoting arm is loose, one-handed use is frustrating. If you have a helper, it should suffice, but if you are working alone, I recommend a design such as the one shown in the attachment. I will be returning the Home Depot one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great This tool works well and save a lot of frustration when replacing sink drains. The drains on both sides of our sink leaked after a time when the original installer made do with a pair of channel locks. I reset them with plumbers putty and this tool and there have been no leaks going on 2 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from verry good tool Much better than using channel lock pliers. Very good tool.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Useless This tool is incredibly poorly designed, because the arm can't be locked. You need two hands to make the thing catch the nubs on the drain's locking nut. There's a good chance that you're using a tool like this begin with because your drain is leaking. If it's been leaking, then water has probably been infiltrating your hardware, which causes rust and mineral build up on the threads. If your drain's locking nut is not turning easily, then you'll need one hand on some type of tool like channel locks on the pipe, and one hand on this tool. Since you need two hands to operate this tool, you're a hand short. Even if you have a helper, you'r working under a sink. There's just not enough room for a 3rd arm, yours or someone else's. This is the first tool I actually returned because it was so useless.
