waht do you suggest to use for bronze grave marker

Asked by tasha May 27, 2020

Answer

There are a few ways to do a bronze grave. The first step is to clean it with a non-abrasive soap to get rid of the dirt that the marker is exposed to. Just use a bucket of water and regular dish sponge. That will lift most of the dirt. Then you can use this item to clean the bronze -- be aware -- that most bronze markets may be made of bronze, but use bronze colored paint on the uppermost layer of the marker. This particular product will not make it shine. But it will get it clean. If you should rub off the paint, you can either use leather dye as touch up on the area (letting it dry) or resurfacing the headstone with the same type of paint (along with varnishing...that takes a lot of time and energy). Back to the headstone, if you still want to make your stone shine, you can then take a palm sander and lightly go over the lettering of your marker, making sure that you only roll over the raised letters and never touching the stone itself. This will take off what ever grime is there and reveal the bronze as if it were brand new. The only issue with this is that it will begin to patina within a few days. If you want to preserve that "new" look, you will need to go over the varnishing steps which require a lot more work and restoration to the stone. If however, you are looking to just get your headstone clean and let nature takes its course and patina....then at this point you can stop and let the stone age naturally.

Restored My Copper
My original 1958 drum flushmount lights were threatened to be painted white unless I restored the shine. The lamps obviously have never been shined and were dull and changing color. You just squirt a lot and rub and boom, look at that shine.

Works well enough
Used this to shine up the brass knobs on a very old hand plane. It worked well enough, I can't say I was floored by the results but as you can see in the picture it is noticeably better. I know there are products out there that could most likely get a better shine but are a lot more money. For the price HD is selling this Brasso at I would say the value scale is tipped in its favor.

I had an ancient bottle and used it on highly tarnished brass. It was taking way too much elbow grease and then read that the ammonia deteriorates after a while. Bought a new bottle and it’s working much better!

This product has be used by me and my family for as long as I can remember - some 60 years - and it has always performed well. It cleans off the oxidation and leave a shiny surface. With brass, you'll need to cover the shiny surface with a protective code - think polyurethane - or the surface won't be shiny very long.

Worked great to restore 20-year old aviation headset brass plugs. I left the Brasso on the plugs for about 45 minutes and then wiped it off with a soft cloth. They looked brand new when I was finished.
