5,000-Watt Gasoline Powered Portable Generator is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from You Get What You Pay For This generator is a great bargain. I bought it to be my primary job site power for construction and use it every day. Starts easy and provides consistent power. No-flat wheels and extension handle are excellent for moving around job site. Just make sure you check the oil every time you add gas because it burns oil like an eskimo in winter. Personally, I don't think a brand new generator should go through a quart of oil in the first two months. I think that may be an indicator of future quality issues. That said, if you are on a budget, this will get the job done. Especially if you are only planning on using it occasionally. Otherwise go buy a quality generator...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ready for the next big outage It's been a long while since we've had a prolonged power outage, but the next one we will have power. All the directions for starting it up are printed on the top of the machine (turn on switch, turn gas valve on, turn to choke, pull rope). On the side of the machine are the watt values of various items (fridge 700, tv 500, microwave 1000, cell phone 25) so you can tell if you can add another appliance and stay below the 5000 watts that the machine is rated. It will be nice to be able to run the blower on the wood stove and be able to heat things up in the microwave when the power goes out. I found it a bit hard pulling the cord to get it started. Most gas powered items make the cord longer than a woman's arms so we have a harder time getting the cord pulled to the max and have a harder time starting them. Once started, it ran smoothly. Even though it was setting on concrete, it did not vibrate or move around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Runs our 110V 140 Amp MIG welder with no problems This is a solid generator which can support a wide range of electronics from welders to well pumps, fridge/freezers, TVs etc. It has four 110V 20 AMP outlets and a single 110/240V 30AMP NEMA L14 locking round outlet. It is easy to start, easy to use, and simple to move around the yard or work site using the foldable handle and included solid plastic wheels. It is a great solution for portable 110/240V power and also as a backup for power loss from storms or earthquakes. It has a 300cc Briggs & Stratton engine which is about as noisy as our lawnmower or gas pressure washer. Since it is a generator, there is no throttle control and it runs at around 2,600 RPM in order for the generator to produce the 5000 Watts of power. The engine was shipped with 10W/30 oil already in the crankcase, so there was nothing to do beyond installing the transport wheels (a simple pin and clip attaches them to the chassis) and the support leg and add fuel. It will run on 87 octane (91 RON) regular unleaded E10 but it is not recommended for the E15/E85 mixes of gas. With a gas tank capacity of 7 gallons, it will run for quite a while. There is a built in strainer in the filler cap to keep large particles out of the gas tank and the on/off petcock also has a removable fuel filter to catch smaller particles. There is also a built in fuel gauge in the top of the fuel tank so you can see how much fuel is left in the tank. The one thing I would say about this generator is that it is heavy. Thankfully it includes a couple of wheels and a foldable T handle which makes it easier to move around your home, ranch or job site. My guess is that it weighs around 180lbs without any gas in the tank which makes it a 2 person job to get it in and out of a pick up truck bed if you use it on a job site. I used it with my 110V 140 AMP MIG welder to repair our front gate. The gate is too far from the house for me to safely use a long extension cord. I had no problems getting the engine started when cold or hot and actually found it didn't need choke to start it (tried starting it with the choke on per the manual but it would fire, switched the choke off and it cranked right up). There is an on/off rocker switch to switch the engine off. As part of the gate repair, I ran an angle grinder to dress the areas I was welding and then used the welder. I didn't run the welder and angle grinder simultaneously, however I suspect that this is possible by plugging the welder and grinder into the two separate 110V duplex outlets. When running the welder, there was a slight reduction in engine RPM as the welder load increased during welding, but it wasn't struggling by any stretch of the imagination and the welds went down the same as if I'd been plugged into the 110V mains with a solid melt between the two metals. Each set of 110V duplex outlets has a GFCI reset button as well as a push to reset circuit breaker while the 110/220 outlet has a rocker style breaker. The engine has an oil level monitor so if the oil in the crankcase gets too low during use, it will protect the engine from overheating and damaging the internals due to lack of oil. When not in use the manual recommends using gas stabilizer in the tank and the engine has a maintenance schedule similar to our ride on lawnmower when it comes to oil changes, air filter changes etc. Finally the generator comes with a 2 year warranty where the second year is a parts only warranty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great unit We bought this as a power source for our remote cabin. It works perfectly for what we need . It is a bit louder than expected, but it puts out a lot of power. No regrets here

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Made Workhorse I can not recommend this generator strongly enough. It's very sturdy and well built, it runs nice and smooth, and it packs plenty of power to meet all my needs. The generator was delivered in a very large, very heavy box and we had it assembled (wheels and foot pad put on) and up and running in about ten minutes. The instructions for first time operation were very straightforward and everything needed is included. The unit was a little louder than anticipated but not overwhelming and I've been extremely pleased with the power output.

Since this will be used for the occasional power outage, I did not want an electric start with battery to maintain for long periods. The GFI protected 120v. outlets are a nice feature, as is the easy to see and read fuel gauge. It would have been nice to have a hour meter to keep track of maintenance needs. Briggs & Stratton does not give a rating for their muffler noise, saying that there is no industry standard. That being the case I have to say this is pretty darn loud. Probably right around 90 decibels or more. However, for my use I am really pleased with this unit and look forward to enjoying Briggs & Stratton's reputation for dependability.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Value Used daily in 110+ degrees. Used a higher velocity oil than recommend changed sparkplug to upgrade. After that it was quieter. Only thing I didn't like was the gas gauge. Eazy to move start fill and maintain. 4+ stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GOOD POWER The Briggs and Stratton 5,000 Watt Gasoline Powered Generator is a ruggedly built, smooth running power source for many house appliances and most of the power tools I own. It comes assembled, except wheels and foot pad, which take about five minutes to put together. Checked oil, filled the gasoline tank and it started on the second, surprisingly easy pull. So far, I've used it with multiple, 12 - 15 Amp motor loads and noticed no lagging on load change. There is no DB rating listed, but it does seem run a little louder than I expected. Also, keep in mind that if you plan to use the 240 Volt outlet, you will need to provide a "generator" locking plug or cable.
