Does generator have a 30amp RV plug in and what is largest AC it can power?

Asked by: Mike
I find the answers to this question, especially the one from B&S, to be very misleading. This generator is designed as a home emergency back up generator and not specifically for the RV market. It has a running power rating of 5000 watts and supports short duration surges up to 6500 watts. 5000 watts corresponds to 20.8 amps when used on a 240 volt load, like a well pump. When powering 120 volt loads, it provides two separate 120 volt circuits that can support up to 2500 watts and 20.8 amps each. These cannot be combined to support a single 120 volt load greater than 20.8 amps or 2500 watts. Since RVs tend to be 120 volt only, the most you'll be able to use is 2500 watts, even if you use a 30 amp RV connector (using an adapter to connect to the generators L1430 plug). Some generators intended for use with RVs have an output voltage switch that will combine the two 120 volt into a single higher capacity circuit available through the 30 amp RV connector. This unit doesn't have that feature.

Will this generator be able to power my well pump when the power is out?
Asked by: Jedi
You need to know how much wattage and current your appliance draws. If you are only concerned with running the well pump, I would say yes.

Can't say too much more about the Q6500 - perfect for my needs. one thing I might add is I built a rain cap for use outdoors in bad weather. fairly easy to build from 3/4 " PVC pipe, some PVC tees and elbows, plywood, a utility tub, miscellaneous hardware, and rubber straps. the overall size of the PVC frame is 19-5/8" x 29-1/4". the plywood base is 22-3/4 x 29-1/4". depending how fancy you make, and what supplies you have, costs would be around $50. when the thing is broken down, everything fits nicely in the utility tub for easy storage.

If you are buying the Q6500 thinking you are getting a true sine wave inverter, think again. I put an oscilloscope on the output and it is a triangle wave clipped at 135V peak (see pictures). If it were a 120V RMS sine wave such as supplied by the utility company the peak would be 170V and of course it would not have a flat top. This waveform may be adequate for many things but I am concerned the harmonics generated by the flat top may affect sensitive electronics. I am waiting for a response from B&S to confirm this is the normal waveform. I suspect it is since the price is so much less than true sine wave inverter generators and something has to go to meet that price point. Pros: very reasonable cost for inverter generator at this power, improved fuel economy, lower sound level than conventional generators but not as quiet as most inverters, probably more than adequate for occasional use, may be OK for sensitive electronics but I don't want to find out the hard way, Cons: no place to lock it down, no separate fuel shut of to allow fuel to be run out of carb for storage, no hour meter, lots of vibration, rattles and clattering sounds, plastic side panels flex when plugging in cords, no electric start and it is somewhat hard to pull start. Comes with 30W oil which would make it very hard to start in the cold weather, for a couple of bucks more they could supply 5W30 synthetic which would ease cold starts. It is probably a fine low cost 5500W inverter generator but I will likely be returning it because I would prefer a true sine wave inverter. I think B&S should publish more detailed data on this generator so you can make an informed purchase. When you call tech support you have to wait a long time and then they cannot answer anything except the most simple questions. They are not familiar with this generator.

My rating is based on the price I paid, and NOT in comparison to a $3-4000 Honda. I would love to have a Honda inverter with comparable wattage, but I'm not ready to pay what the Honda costs given that my main use is for home backup with my manual transfer switch during power failure (I'm not using it for a RV). The following are my observations so far: I think it is relatively easy to start (usually starts on first or second pull with choke), and has been reliable for the 6 or 7 hours I have run it so far. It has the correct 30 amp plug for my transfer switch, so I did not have to kluge something together. The 30 amp plug also has a floating neutral which is what is needed for home backup (the rest of the plugs are bonded neutral). I do not think it is as loud as some comments would lead you to believe, nor is the plastic case as skimpy as some have indicated. There is a plastic panel you have to remove on one side to check the oil -- the panel is held on by a few plain screws (which is pretty utilitarian but again, this is not a Honda). Other inverter units I considered included the Champion models, but none had as much overall power in a single unit, nor did they have the correct transfer switch plug. Some comments have harped on the fact that the overall wattage of the Briggs is split between two 120 volt circuits, and others have commented that they have had problems starting up some high-BTU 120 volt RV air conditioners. I did notice similar comments about running high-BTU AC units in the Champion reviews. My conclusion is if you want something that is quiet as a Honda, and that will reliably start up larger RV AC units, then you should probably buy a Honda if you can afford it. Otherwise this Briggs has been great for the price and I think it is set up well for a manual transfer switch and home power backup.

Perhaps not as quiet as I was expecting, but still a good generator to have on hand. Despite being well packaged and protected the plastic shrouds around this generator were broken and out of alignment right out of the box, that was a little disappointing to me. But that did not affect the functionality of the generator one bit. And as I mentioned while not being as quiet as I expected because of the videos of it operating it is a powerhouse and functions flawlessly in the moderate use I put it thru today. I dont have a transfer switch and I wont use a pigtail to unsafely feed its generated power back thru the box by plugging it into the dryer outlet, so all my tests were hooked up with a adequately rated extension cord and all items were powered perfectly. It comes assembled and all you have to do before operating is pop out three screws take off the side panel and add the two pouches of oil Briggs & Stratton has provided. (36oz of 30w small engine oil). They even included an extended funnel to facilitate putting the oil in easily and without making a mess. It has standard generator power outlets on the side and even has two USB outlets to power and charge small electronics such as phone and laptops without occupying one of the other outlets. The built in collapsible handle is handy and sturdy and the attached rear wheels along with that handle make moving the generator a piece of cake. Just dont forget to make up a grounding wire for the unit. I use a landscape spike as my grounding rod. If it had only arrived without the busted shroud and was actually as quiet as advertised have given it an excellent rating all the way around.

Added oil and fired it up, but initial start took quite a few pulls. Tested under varying electrical loads. Much quieter than a standard generator particularly in quiet mode. This is a pure sine wave generator and I charged my cell phone with it and had no issues. My only gripe so far is that some of the plastic parts don't fit together very well but this is purely a cosmetic problem. I think Briggs And Stratton have hit a home run with this product

This 5000 watt Briggs & Stratton inverter generator is a feature-packed product that is priced competitively. It was delivered in well-designed factory packaging that protected it well during shipment. The documentation supplied with this product is clear and concise. All that was needed to ready it for operation was unpacking, adding the supplied engine oil using one of the funnels provided and adding fuel. I set the choke as instructed. It started on the second pull and ran smoothly after opening the choke. I loaded it initially by connecting it to a 10-inch table saw and also an air compressor, it handling both of these loads well. I later tested it on fairly closely balance loads in my home with the Quiet Power Technology engaged after installing a 30-ampere transfer switch that is equipped with an ammeter for each of the two 120 volt inverter circuits. I used a Reliance Model # 3006HDK transfer switch kit that is available at The Home Depot. With the Quiet Power Technology (QPT) engaged, I found this inverter generator relatively quiet during operation, much more so than an old conventional unit that I had used in the past during power failures. This unit is a compact 20.5 inches x 21 inches x 24 inches making it easy to store where there is limited space. It is also easy to move on its wheel system with the easy-to-deploy, self-stowing handle as it weighs only about 135 pounds without fuel.. The inverter technology used in this unit is relatively new, it made possible by electronic circuitry and state-of-the-art magnet technology that provides clean power that is said to be of essentially the same quality as power from your electric utility. With the QPT engaged, the engine is governed to a speed that meets the demand. That means that under less than full load, the engine runs slower than 3600 rpm and is quieter and more fuel efficient than a generator without this technology or for this unit with the QPT switched "off". The QPT allows for the compact size and high fuel efficiency. I trusted the quality of the power from this unit enough to try it for powering my house electronic system that provides control over our home-wide sound system, televisions, theater system and some of our lighting. The electronics worked as normal with power from this generator. This unit has two 20-amp duplex GFCI receptacles and a 30-amp, 120/240 volt twist-and-lock receptacle. This generator is equipped with a fuel level indicator, low engine oil protection, overload protection, power-use LED's and switchable Quiet Power Technology. The engine kill switch turns off the ignition and shuts off the fuel supply to the engine. This unit also has two USB ports providing up to 2.1 amps at 5 volts for recharging US-powered devices with the QPT disengaged. Included is a 2-year parts and 1-year labor warranty for non-commercial users and a 1-year parts and labor warranty for commercial use.

When Briggs & Stratton first announced this generator this spring, I thought to myself this must be too good to be true. Lots of power, quiet, at a very affordable price. It was (too good to be true that is) Noise level: At idle this is a very quiet generator. Put any load on it and it's loud. Not quite as loud as the cheapo contractor generators, but you can't carry on a conversation around it. I was inside my RV when I turned on the RV refrigerator (not a big load) and it was noisy even with the door shut. Power level: Plugged into the L14-30 outlet I was unable to run either AC. I have one 13,500 BTU and one 15,500 BTU unit. With everything in the RV turned off, I attempted to start the 15.5K unit. This unit draws 1800W and surges around 3000 at start. The generator overloaded and shut off the power output. I then reset everything and attempted the 13.5K unit with similar results. I have a Honda eu3000is generator that will run the small one but the Briggs can't deliver the starting surge. This is probably a decent machine for emergency backup power but it's not nearly as quiet (carrying load) and they'd have you believe. If you're considering this to power your RV, think twice if your plans include running an air conditioner. Having said all that, the Home Depot people were prompt, and professional when it came time to return it. The extended warranty needs to be 'returned' on line but that's not difficult easier.
