If the panel works with a fan, to turn on and off, how do you control the speed of the fan?

Asked by Islangrl October 10, 2020
1
Answer

Brilliant can only turn a fan on and off. If you have a remote for the fan, you could use Brilliant to turn the fan on and off and the remote to adjust the speed.

Can I pick this unit up in store?

Hi Jas, At this time, Brilliant Controls are only available on Home Depots website. Check back soon for in-store availability.

What if you have a single dual switch will it work?

Asked by Maddie August 5, 2020

Answers

If you mean a single stand alone switch, that work with another switch (3-way) then the answer is yes. If you have multiple grouped switches, then all the switches would need to be replaced.

Do you only need 1 control panel ? Or do you have to replace all the switches in the home?

Asked by Mike July 9, 2020

Answers

You only need one control panel to be able to control your smart devices. If you have wall switches that are not smart you can install another control and you can have another point of access to your devices.

This is a great little product. It is one of those items that you didn't think you needed, but once you get it they are super useful and you don't want to live without! This system is super simple to install. All you need is a light switch. You can still use the touchscreen to control the light switch being replaced, so don't worry about needing a 2nd witch. We have a split floor plan, and our AC smart thermostat is in the opposite side of our bedroom. This brilliant touchscreen control allowed us to control the AC from our room. It also works with most other smart home electronics like cameras and door bells.

I love it! It was a wonderful gift. However, I have to admit that I didn’t have to pay for it. In fact, I didn’t actually know what it was so I chose to install it in place of a dual-gang light switch that we almost never used. Now that I have had it working for a few days it is wonderful and easy to use. I could have put it anywhere! GREAT LIGHT SWITCH * It provides a little slide show of family pictures and I can change the pictures any time I want using the Brilliant android App. * I chose to have it include the time and outside temperature on the display. It also lists the date and the day of the week but the font used is so tiny that you have to walk over to read those. * I chose to have the display controlled by a motion sensor. It turns off when there is no one in the room -- or when no one has moved for several minutes. * Although I will have to explain to guests how to use the grooves to turn on or adjust the lights, it is actually easier to use than the decora switch that it replaced which had a tiny stick for adjusting brightness GREAT SMART HOME DEVICE * It was pretty simple to integrate it with my Samsung Smartthings Network. * I finally have lights I can control from my phone and include in automations * I can turn on or dim the lights from my recliner while watching tv * While away visiting relatives, I was able to open my Smartthings app and schedule my lights to turn on and off to help make my house look more lived in -- even though I forgot to do this before I left. * I could have created “scenes” in the Brilliant App to do this, but it is SO NICE to be able to use the app I am already familiar with to control my Brilliant Lights as well as everything else. * Using the Brilliant app is actually very simple as long as you remember that the LIGHTS but will control the lights right now. You need to create a “scene” if you want to put the lights on a schedule. * You can also use a “scene” to control a bunch of devices with a single button. I might purchase another Brilliant to replace the light switch near the door leading to my garage and create scenes to set security cameras and door locks into HOME and AWAY modes. However, right now I use Smartthings Geofencing which is even simpler. OUR FIRST ALEXA DEVICE * At first, Alexa couldn’t talk back because I received a faceplate with a defective speaker, but the customer service team was very helpful. A replacement faceplate arrived in less than a week, and it was simple to use that box to return the bad one using the return shipping label they provided. * The defective speaker wasn’t too disappointing because Alexa would still adjust the lights even though we couldn’t understand what she was saying. However, after I installed the replacement faceplate, I realized that Alexa can do a lot more than adjust the lighting. * We can now use alexa from anywhere in our kitchen, entry or great room (the speaker is that sensitive). Alexa can not only turn on and off the lights; she can also report on the weather, figure out how many tablespoons in a quarter cup or start a kitchen timer. I am also working on using an Alexa Blueprint to teach her some of the stuff I get asked a lot in the kitchen -- like how much does our mixing bowl weigh, how many grams for 2 tablespoons of sugar, or how long do we bake our favorite cookies. * Google Home can control the lights, but it doesn’t respond through the Brilliant Speaker like Alexa does. MIGHT BE A GOOD VIDEO INTERCOM I actually never foresee using my brilliant as an intercom. I don’t have a RING doorbell, and my Brilliant Controller is right by the entry so I don’t use it to talk to people at the front door. However, I was able to test the video conference to talk to my husband in the kitchen using my phone and the Android App from my bedroom. * It took at least 30 seconds for the video window to open which could be annoying, but I assume a brilliant-to-brilliant connection would be quicker. * My light switches are placed a little low because my home was designed to be wheel-chair friendly. This puts the brilliant at an awkward height for video conferencing. INSTALLATION NOTES: * The little instruction book that came with it told me It had to be the ONLY dimmer in the circuit so I also had to replace the dimmer at the other side of the room with the dumb switch I removed during the Brilliant installation. The Brilliant installation was VERY helpful with short videos showing me how to label the wires as I removed them from the old switches and then put them in the right places on the Brilliant Controller. It took less than 20 minutes to remove the old switch and install the Brilliant Controller. It could have been faster if I knew what I was doing, but I watched all the short video clips and double checked my work at every step. * Unfortunately, replacing the dimmer with the dumb switch turned out to be more difficult because I couldn’t tell which wire did what. I ended up removing the brilliant controller so I could follow a youtube video that showed me how to figure out which wire was the “common” wire in a 3-way circuit with 2 light switches. * After the Brilliant Controller was installed, it took about an hour to set up the software and link it to Smartthings, Google Home and Alexa. As other have noted the touch keyboard on the Brilliant Controller is very finicky. I tried using a stylus, but I still had to watch very carefully for each letter to change color when touched. It sometimes took two or three taps. It took me 3 tries to connect the Brilliant to my wifi network, but I think it was because it was so hard to type in the password. Unfortunately, while practicing gestures, I popped the Brilliant screen right off the wall! I guess I hadn’t pulled down firmly enough when I mounted the screen on its backplate. When I replaced the screen more carefully (and heard it snap in place this time), it worked fine, but I was no longer in the tutorial. To continue setting things up I went to the home screen and clicked on the Gear Icon in the upper right hand corner. From here, I just went down the list of menu items activating any features that I thought my family would use. I have a lot of IOT devices. Most came over with no problem. However a few came over with strange code names (e.g. FCA002). Therefore, during installation, I put all those devices in a single room as “not lights”. Then when everything else was done, I sat down in front of the Brilliant Controller with the Smartthings App open on the phone in my lap. I turned on the mystery devices one at a time using my phone to figure out which device just turned on. It was simple to edit the name in the Brilliant Controller. After their identities were clear, I moved each of the mystery devices to the appropriate room (or group). Then I went to the other end of my house to try the intercom feature. I don’t have any other Brilliant controllers to use as an intercom, but, after updating the privacy settings and opening the little shutter covering the camera, I was able to use the Android App on my phone to set up a video chat with my husband in the kitchen. It took at least 30 seconds for the video window to open; I assume Brilliant-to-Brilliant communication would be quicker. The image was not as sharp as those from my security cameras, but I could see my husband pretty clearly, and I could hear everything. Unfortunately, my husband could not hear me well at all. Turns out the speaker on the unit I received is defective. Next, I set up Alexa and Google Home which is very simple using the WORKS WITH BRILLIANT menu item. I haven’t used Google or Alexa voice commands before so it was quite rewarding to tell Alexa to “Turn on the Foyer Light”. Even though the defective speaker makes Alexa’s audio feedback completely unintelligible, the screen displays information so I can decipher the gist of our conversation. For example, when I asked her for tomorrow’s weather forecast, Alexa’s audio response was garbled, but the information was beautifully displayed on the Brilliant Screen. I used the HELP feature in the android App to start a live chat with Brilliant Technical Support. A robot asked for more information about me before I was connected with a real person who promptly asked me to send an email with a video sample of audio coming through the Briliant speaker. I was disappointed that I was unable to send the video directly through their chat system, but our email exchange was efficient. He asked a couple more questions and asked for photos of the serial numbers on the box and the back of my Brililant Screen before confirming my name and address to send a replacement screen. Overall, I am very happy with both my Brilliant Controller and the Support Team that stands behind it.

Installing this switch really should have been easier than it was. The switch's body is deep enough that it takes up a lot of the space in the single gang box so you don't have a lot of room behind it to fold the wires. Using supplied wire nuts for all 4 connections did not leave enough room to set the switch into the box. I had to cut the wires shorter and connect 2 wires directly to the switch rather than use the supplied extension wires and wire nuts. I did finally get it installed. The system walks you through the set up and it will recognize your wi-fi. The only problem I found with the interface is that it is hard to enter your passwords and other typed information because key presses duplicate and the keys are too small. I have not found a stylus that will work to press the on screen buttons. Once it is set up, it is easy to use and you can use Alexa just like any other Alexa voice device.

The Brilliant light switch is an awesome gadget that is a luxury that is sure to please. I was a little intimated to install at it at first but it turned out to be very easy like a normal light switch. The app interface is very easy to control. I syncd mine to my Alexa and it works great. I also like the option of swiping up and down on screen to control light and dimming. I also synced my ring door bell to it and can use that instead of my phone, I have issues with video relay with using the ring. I really like how you can customize a picture slide show on screen. It would be nice if app can handle a weather app or other apps.

It is extremely important to note that if you live in an older home, this product will likely not be right for you unless you have recently had the home rewired to current wiring standards. I live in an older home and I did not have all the wiring required to install this (two black wires, a white wire, and a ground wire.) This setup should be standard in a newer built home though. You should definitely check your wiring before making this purchase. Do not just assume you'll be able to use it because you haven't had issues with other smart fixtures in the past. I have always been able to install anything in my home, but this time I was not able to use the product.

My wife and I are loving our new Brilliant smart home control 3-switch panel. The name Brilliant is a great name for this product because it truly is brilliant and easy to use. This switch has become the new hub for controlling our Lifx lights without having to access the app every time on our phone or iPads. You can now turn them off/on or change their color with ease. My son loves it because he never downloaded the app on his phone but he can now control them if he wants to. This switch has also made accessing our (3) Ring cameras a breeze. You can simply click on the faceplate to bring up the camera link then click on either one of the three cameras and get a live view through it or even communicate with someone via the "hold to talk" button if needed. We programmed the first of the three switches to control our kitchen lights. It now turns them off/on with the simple tap of the switch. The second switch is set to control our ceiling fan in the living room to turn it off/on. The third switch we set to control the ceiling fan lights which were dimmable and we we able to continue using them in this fashion also. You simply slide your finger up and down the switch panel and the lights will get brighter or dimmer based on where you slide your finger too. We did have one problem with our kitchen lights in that it originally let us use the switch to control them then the switch was somehow smart enough to know that the lights were over 300 watts so it wouldn't let the switch activate the lights. I was able to go into the settings and get the switch to finally allow me to turn them off/on and has continued to work so far. The lights in our kitchen are (3) of the ballast lights that are up behind the plastic sheeting (you know from the 1980's ;o) They each have (2) 4 ft. fluorescent bulbs in them. About a year ago I took the fluorescent bulbs out and put low energy LED's in them and they have worked great. Somehow this switch sensed the load on the wiring or something and wouldn't allow them to work but has since allowed them to work with no problems so I'm hoping we don't have any issues in the future. The instructions for installing this light switch are very straightforward. I would highly recommend watching the YouTube video that Brilliant made themselves for installing the switch. My only problem with installing the switch was that the kitchen light I wanted to turn off/on was part of a 3-way circuit so I was unsure how to install it. Watching the YouTube video made it easy to understand and helped a lot with the installation. All in all the installation of the switch was quite easy but it was kind of hard to get everything to fit in my triple gang electrical box but it did finally go. All in all my wife and I are very happy with our new switch. We haven't even began to use all the features that it supports but as time goes along I'm sure we will use more and more of them. If you are in the process of making your home into a "smart" home these Brilliant switches are a step in the right direction and you will love the ease in which they connect all your home technologies to one another.

The Brilliant Smart Home Control, 2-switch panel, is a great addition to our smart home devices. I would give it 5 stars but the speaker isn't working properly. The audio/voice is quiet and garbled. The technician team for this company is ultra-responsive though. My husband tried to install it on a Friday evening and it just wasn't working. He contacted the team and they got back to him way after normal business hours. The problem was that the 2-unit light switch we had in mind didn't have a neutral and that is a requirement. The team told him that we could use a different location even though it was a combination light switch and outlet (an outlet that we never use). On Saturday, when he was installing it in this new location and found that the speaker isn't working, the technician team was responsive again, even on a weekend. They asked for a video of the speaker in action and I'm pretty certain they will get back to us with a solution based on their great performance. As for the unit itself, the app is simple to use and it works. The unit pairs with our Ring doorbell and Alexa. With the Ring though, it doesn't activate a camera view unless someone presses the Ring. We have Sonos speakers and the unit works with those. We can ask Alexa on the unit to show weather on the screen. (It took awhile to figure out how to get weather.) We uploaded a bunch of our personal photos and they rotate across the screen. This is such a nice feature. Also, a very basic but useful function is the time display (the day and date are displayed but are in a tiny font). It just takes a touch to turn the lights over the peninsula on/off. The device has even more functionality that I'm sure we will take advantage of over time. There are a number of youtube videos that provide information about the device in case you are undecided about making the investment. Again, I give 5 stars to customer support and, if the speaker wasn't compromised, I would give this item 5 stars.

Love this 2 switch panel. I don't have every gadget out there yet, but Brilliant made this very well, and simple. You do need some basic electrical skills to install this. Our gang box was a bit tight so I had to cut a few existing wires short and push it deep in. This device is by no means big or anything, but it just happened that all the wires met at this box. I love that it's able to work with so many different brands. For me, I mostly cared about Sonos, Ring, Yale and Schlage, but it talks to many more, hopefully, "future proofing" it for as long as it can. The plastic feels nice and slick as well, and I love the screen. It makes the home look very modern and fresh. Many who come over don't even know what it is, but they want now.

The Brilliant smarthome is a device that will replace your basic wall switch into a touchscreen. Wirh Alexa already built into it, anybody can activate it and enjoy their favorite music. Inside the packaging you will get detailed instructions for easy set up and additional wires and wire nuts. If you have trouble setting it up Brilliant offers email & phone support. Were having alot of fun using the touchscreen to turn on & off our bedroom lights. You also have the ability to control all your other smart devices. Just download the app. I have mine connected to my garage door and some lights. There are other smart devices that can also be connected with. Apple and Genie are the two that have worked for me.

(What's this)
A lot of features in a well-thought out, stylish, and compact package. Getting this much control out of an existing electric box is great. No new wiring, assuming you have a neutral in your switch enclosure. Fortunately we did, so the install was super easy. The unit is smart enough to detect the difference between the line and load sides and adjust accordingly. It handles two-way and three-way switches, but not 4-way switches. The engineers thought this through all the ay around. The wiring aspects are great with daisy chaining possible, in many cases, without needing to resort to pigtails. Should they be needed, however, plenty of wire nuts and pigtails are included (we did not need any). The instructions that are really straight-forward and super light. The printed instructions that come with the unit includes only information on how to wire it. Instructions on configuring the device really are not there, relying instead on the quality of the guided installation wizard, which is pretty good. The home control supports many devices, both its own and other manufacturers. We linked this to our Samsung SmartThings Hub and a Google Echo. The smartphone app is good, but not exceptional from a usability perspective. It provides control over everything, but some functions you have to hunt around for, like finding the screen to set the zip code to get the weather, how to access the unit's camera on smartphone, etc. We only have one of these at the moment, but we definitely will get more as you can use this as an intercom, see live camera images from other units on each unit and both talk and see on smartphones. These also serve as Google Echo devices which lets us perform Alexa functions and routines with verbal commands. It does not seem to be possible to use Alexa routines as scenes, which would be nice, but these are easily recreated on the Brilliant and Alexa routines can be invoked verbally from these units anyways. The devices will not play music like an Echo, but will control Sonos smart speakers (it seems that Sonos are the only smart speakers currently supported). Brilliant does ask for input on new devices to add to their support list, which does seem to imply they will be sending upgrades regularly. The unit supports multiple cameras, hubs, doorbells, smart home outlets and switches. Many of the functions can be performed on both the app and the device, which can lead to confusion. The integration of the setup process performed using the device and setup performed using the app can certainly be improved. Another cool feature is the ability to upload our own pictures. The pictures shown in this review are the ones that come with the unit, but personalized pictures are upload-able. A shutter can be moved over the camera for times and places where the camera is not wanted. we also liked the ability to establish multiple levels of lock-out controls that force some functions to enter a PIN, to perform. Especially useful if young children can reach the units. Their customer service is fantastic. The first faceplate we got had a problem with the speaker. A quick chat with the support line using the smartphone app, sending them a short video of the issue and a new one was sent immediately with no fuss. We had the replacement installed 2 days later and it worked great. We are really pleased with the unit and highly recommend it.
