Questions & Answers

Product information refers to towing with lawn mower or garden tractor. I assume you could use an atv for towing?

Asked by: Dave H
Anything with a pin hitch; though on an ATV the tow bar would probably attach higher than on a lawn mower thus tilting the hopper backwards and up. The only real problem with that is the material wouldn't spread quite so smoothly and there would be some product left in the bin that wouldn't flow into the spreader opening. You could always "jerry rig" a bolt to lower the attachment point.

Yes, it has a clear, elastic plastic cover so you can monitor the level of materials in the hopper.

How do you turn the spreader on and off while towing behind garden mower?I presume there is no problem spreading pelitized lime.
Asked by: Pat
The long handle depicted in the picture is the device used to activate and deactivate spreading action. It's very easy to reach from the mower seat.

I started to give this product a 3 star rating but thought it could have easily gotten 5 stars with a few minor changes. The product is well built with few, if any metal parts that could rust. The gears look rugged enough that I don't think they should be a concern. Though I have only used the spreader once assembly, for grass seed, the reason for the star reduction was noticed right afterward. I noticed that the flow plate which closes off the flow of material, would not close completely. It left a 1/8" gap; small enough to handle seed but large enough that I assumed small particles like some fertilizers would fall through. I spent about 2 hours loosening bolts and trying various ways to readjust the unit. To no avail. My first try actually made it worse. My first call to customer service didn't provide any useful information. On my second call I was told (I think without much conviction) that the gap was normal. I guess we'll see! Anyway it could just be this unit. The other thing I noticed, which is not mentioned in the instructions, is that the tow bar which can be attached at either end, is only meant to go in one way. The two holes in the middle of the bar are drilled forward of center, away from the main unit, and the bar needs to be installed that way. Saves you a lot of unbolting things if you do so. In any event, I still believe this will be a useful and reliable product from what I've seen so far.

I bounced back and forth between the assembly instructions and the assembly video on this website. I bought the spreader at 3PM and had 200 lbs of fertilizer out by 7pm (with 40 min drive time). The packaging of nuts, bolts, washers, and such were shrink wrapped and laid out in a logical fashion which made sense when assembling by the steps in the manual. I had never heard of nor had a Brinly-Hardy. I have used John Deere and Agri-Fab and this one seems much better constructed with quality parts and sturdy materials. The spreader scattered the fertilizer evenly and had a nice circular pattern. I feel this one will last longer than the others. The enclosed gearbox is a big plus. This will probably be my go to brand now especially since its made in the USA. I feel proud to have a quality product made in our country at a reasonable price.

Opening settings need to be minimal to spread fertilizer. Set at 2 and used twice as much fertilizer as i should have used. Setting opening so low it lead to hopper closing on its own when terrain got remotely bumpy. From the stripes in the lawn it does not appear to broadcast to 12' as promoted. Drilled hole in lever so i could hold trap open with a cord rather than trying to drive and twist back to hold lever open. Overall feels sturdy but we will see.

The large capacity enabled me to treat my entire 2/3-acre yard in two trips. With my old manual push spreader, I had to fill it 5-6 times to get the same coverage. The spreader was easy to assemble, although the 30-minute time I read online was a bit of a stretch--it took me almost twice that because the illustrations weren't quite concise or large enough. It was a breeze to pull behind my lawn tractor and the handle that starts/stops spreading action was very easy to reach from the seat of the tractor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Brinly 125lb Spreader This could be 5 star if the bottom of the spreader didn't have a flat bottom. It has trouble dispersing the last few pounds of granules. Wish is was tapered so it would flow easier. Overall easy to put together, nice wide frame, good tires, easy to operate, etc. I pull this spreader with a zero turn on 3 acres, some is rough terrain works just fine.

I own other Brinly products and love there quality. I have had a small issue with the control lever closing as other people have had. I will try tightening the bolt and nut more and see if that helps but overall I am very pleased with this spreader.

It takes a little extra time to assemble but the instructions and hardware package is awesome. It makes it so easy to follow the instructions and parts are separated for each step. Mine came with composite wheels and shaft is not long enough. It ends half way into the hub of the right side wheel and does not come out on the outside. Will see how long it will last.
