Product Overview

Brinly's 40 in. tow-behind Aerator-Spreader combination attachment allows you to simultaneously aerate and spread granular materials. The heavy-duty spike aerator perforates the ground while the steel drop spreader drops seed, lime or fertilizer directly into the soil where it works fast and won't wash away. This hard-working tool is built tough with durable tubular steel framing and drawbars. The 100 lbs. capacity hopper is made from 18-Gauge all-welded steel to minimize twisting and flexing when loaded. And the aerator's 8 in. galvanized steel tine stars stay sharp, won't rust and penetrate up to 2 in. to allow air to reach the root system.
  • 2-in-1 design: Combo aerator spreader drops seed, fertilizer or lime while you aerate to expedite project time and ensure material enters the soil.
  • NEW 3-D Tines for 2X the Strength: Brinly's Patent-Pending 3-D tines in galvanized steel inhibit rust and resist bending, even in compacted soil
  • All Steel Hopper: With a 100 lb. (1.74 cu. ft.) capacity, the durable steel hopper prevents twisting and flexing for long-lasting durability.
  • Encourage healthy growth: Featuring 132 tine tips, the 8" diameter steel stars perforate the soil up to 2″ deep providing access for air, water, and nutrients to root system.
  • Calibrated flow control: The flow control feature includes an adjustable stop to ensure accurate spread patterns with minimal waste.
  • Transport Mode: Use the single lever to engage the 10" pneumatic transport wheels to cross driveways and sidewalks with ease
  • Heavy Tubular Design: The metal tow tube design and solid tine shaft ensures maximum dependability.
  • Heavy-Duty Nylon Spacers: The heavy-duty spacers provide maximum strength and dependability.
  • 30 Minute Assembly: Assembles in under a half hour. A single, heavy-duty universal Hitch Pin is included to easily attach to any rider or tractor and most any ZTR or ATV.

Stop - Do Not Buy Agri Fab - Buy this!
I have 5.5 acres with 3.5 being lawn. Last May I purchased the Agri Fab spike/dropper. It took 3 hours to assemble with confusing instructions and the hardware was very sub par. The fertilizer drop gate never aligned straight from left to right and the whole metal assembly just seemed lacking. Jump forward to this May and the whole chain assembly and spreader turning rod rusted solid. Was in a shed and under cover the entire time. Took to the dump. Assembled the the Brinly today. Far superior, powder coated, inflated tires, less than an hour to assemble and all hardware 1st rate. Only wish the hopper was larger but very satisfied.

Great little machine. Once you get it figured out and dialed in it seems to work well. I haven't seen the results just yet from the planting but I think it will work out well. Just make sure you read the directions as the soil needs to be slightly wet but not too wet when you begin the application. Some people mentioned bending of the spikes but I didn't have any issues and I feel like my yard has a fair amount of rocks. Also, this is a big machine. You can cover the yard quickly due to the width of the machine. All in all its great and worked well behind my tractor.

Drop spreader distributes contents evenly and consistently. The distribution control does not shut off fully so there is some leakage of product when filling the hopper and when it is waiting to be driven off - see video. The aerator tines are very sharp but it is hard to see if they are making much impression on the earth. The unit was not 'hopping' so I guess they are getting some penetration even when the hopper is empty. The idea of combining aeration and distribution of materials is, on the face of it, a good one but I think I need a year of use to see if it really will replace my separate aerator with its two heavy concrete blocks ensuring good ground penetration of the tines. Disappointingly the weight tray for this unit is small and only available at extra cost.

I have a big yard so it takes a long time to first aerate the lawn and then spread fertilizer several times per year. I had been using a cyclone-type spreader which is great if you have a perfect yard with no weeds or sensitive vegetation. But I am surrounded by neighbors and woods and that means I will always have invasive weeds. Also using a weed & feed fertilizer in a cyclone spreader is just not an option because of my multiple flower beds and a vegetable garden. So I got this drop spreader/aerator to make my life a little easier. It was fairly easy to assemble but the instruction booklet lists the wrong size for the provided bolts and nuts (they should be ½ and ¾, not 5/16 and ½). However I followed the pictures and it only took about an hour to put it together. Then I spread some regular lawn fertilizer on my centipede grass. No problem except the Upper Lever (drop control lever) slipped back and forth on bumpy surfaces allowing mixed results. I tightened up the bolt attaching the lever to the spreader bin. Then I spread some weed & feed on the parts of the yard where there was a lot of weed invasion. No problems. Finally I wanted to spread some wildflower seed over a cleared area. I mixed the seed with sand and went to work. Apparently the flower seeds were too big for the openings in the hopper and clogged it up. I guess next time I’ll pay more attention to the particle sizes on page 14! Overall this is a great machine from a dependable company that has been around for a long time.

Good in concept,, poor in execution. Recommend for large yards... Not a bad idea, there are good elements and I see where the design of this was / is going. A few quality issues, several of the bolts are much longer then the need to be and one of the nuts was not threaded, had to find a bolt in my junk drawers, not something I would expect from a new product. Several of the parts are not coated and I am sure will rust soon. All of the fasteners are also plain steel so I am sure they will start to rust as well. Also looks like they are on the third attempt at getting one of the bolts right, came with a silver one, a gold one was added later and they mailed me yet another bolt. Good to see they are trying to make it right, they should check this as part of the design check process. Its not that hard to do especially for mechanical designs that are simple like this. The main unit is powder coated so I think that part will last quite a while. The tines are good and sharp. Without any extra weight they penitrated the grass just fine and I have clay soil under my 2 year old sod. The arm to raise and lower the wheels is too short, especially like where I needed to use it going over the sidewalk, because it was too far away I ended up just leaving it down. Understand if too long the arm will not allow a turn, however as it is now it is way too short. Another thing I do not like is that I must aerate when fertilizing, I guess the best way is to fertilize and just happen to aerate the lawn. Later come back and do the aeration alone, this is because fertilizer needs to be put on evenly or you will have stipes from different levels of fertilizer being applied. There is no way to just fertilize, it would have been nice to have the wheels turn the paddles for when the fertilizer is being applied. For me, I'll just use this for aeration and fertilize with a broadcast spreader so I don't end up with green stripes everywhere. The size of the unit is perfect, I have a 42 inch deck riding mower so this 8s almost the same size.

Had originally purchased the competitor’s aerator-spreader with resin bin - but returned it. When I received it I inventoried hardware as I do for all assembly products and found to be missing items. Also there was a substantial amount of assembly and even with the support videos I decided to return. I then chose the Brinley-Hardy 40in tow aerator-spreader Model AS2-40BH1-G. It’s clearly apparent Brinly-Hardy’s attention to detail and massive engineering went into the assembly of this product. A majority of the product out of the box is preassembled leaving you with only the tow bars, tires engagement/disengagement bar and bracket, flow control arm and tires attachment. A shrink-wrapped hardware pack is provided with each assembly step grouped. Brinly-Hardy has also taken confusion out of assembly by drawing each hardware piece to scale in the assembly guide so that you can actually place the piece on the illustration to confirm you have the right piece. All hardware was included. I’m a retired petite 5’2” female and I was able to assemble without issue in just under 40 minutes. I struggled a little with the tow bars – not because of poor design – but because it was difficult for me to align the bars and hold them firmly to the bin while tightening the screws. It was my physical limitations that caused me to struggle. That added to the assembly time. A larger person with greater arm and finger strength could have assembled this unit in under 20 minutes. I’m so happy I returned the competitor’s model and chose the Brinly-Hardy spiker aerator-spreader. First of all I like being able to disengage the wheels and allow the entire weight of the spreader and contents to assist a greater depth of aeration. Also the spikes are 3-D designed adding strength and eliminating bending. I also prefer the steel bin rather than plastic and it should last significantly longer. I rinse off my equipment after each use so rust should not be a problem. My first project was aerating and top seeding my front and rear lawns. I used water saving coated Kentucky31 fescue and because I hate having to go through the calibration exercise, so I noted the flow control setting suggested in the user manual for pelleted & granular seed at 1.0# per 100 sqft was setting 10 and large seed size 12. I set the flow control at 10 and found the drop to be adequate. The previous day my area had thunderstorms with 2.5in rainfall which was perfect to soften the ground. And with forecasted 2.5in rain over the next two days followed by several days of sunshine, it was a perfect day to top seed the lawn. I towed the aerator-spreader with my 42inch lawn tractor and found the spreader to be extremely stable, regardless of incline or terrain (I live on a mountain and my home is built on a slope). You too will be impressed with the tight turn ratio of the spreader. I mowed and mulched as I towed the spreader, aerating and dropping seed. The mulched grass provided a nice covering over the seed. The uniformity of the seed dropped was remarkable and the spreader dropped the entire contents of the bin. After loocking at the area top seeded I was impressed that the aerating tines actually helped to get that seed down to ground contact. I tried to take a pic to illustrate - look closely for the oval light colored seed with red arrows. In no time at all, I was able to get my March cleanup accomplished. I can already see this product to be a major player in my lawn maintenance regime and so versatile in dropping seed, pre-emergents and fertilizers, along with aerating. Thanks Brinly-Hardy for a well thought out design and assembly. This is a winning product with a two year warranty!

Some assembly required. It's very convenient that the parts in the parts package are in the order in which you need them. One of the lock nuts required for assembly did not have adequate threads. Fortunately, I was able to get a lock nut from a neighbor and complete the assembly. This is the reason for giving a quality rating of four. If you're putting this together by yourself, you're going to need something to support the hopper for steps two and three of the assembly process. The unit worked perfectly. Note that the paddle for the spreader does not work (turn) if the aerator blades are not engaged.

I was pleasantly surprised after using this aerator. I was afraid the tines would bend but after doing almost an acre of yard, all the tines were still straight with no dull points. As you will see in the photos, I built a box to add weight to press the tines into the ground. There is an accessory that you can buy but I had spare materials and built it in five minutes. This aerator will take about an hour to assemble The instructions are great and all bolts are numbered. The only issue I had was that some of the nuts were not threaded causing me to buy extras. I have not tried the spreader option but it seems fairly straight forward.

Brinly-Hardy and The Home Depot supply the perfect yard tool to tow behind your 4 wheeler, ATV, small tractor or riding lawn mower. This unit will do two jobs that are needed in the coming Spring season ! The 40 inch hopper will hold up to 100 pounds of fertilizer or grass seed. The aerator tines are right at 38 inches wide. The Lift lever raises the 4 inch wheels for aerating and locks them down to use spreader by it self. A big plus is the 4 inch wheels are air filled ! It can be used to do both at the same time, to, aerate and seed/fertilize all in one motion !! I recommend adding weight to it while you are aerating by it self ! Came in a strong (see photos) box and was packed very well ! All hopper and frame parts are powder coated for long life !!
