Product Details

The Brinly 42 in. Lawn Sweeper is a tow-behind tractor attachment that collects leaves and grass clippings into its high-capacity 20 cu. ft. hamper. The 5:1 gear ratio results in higher tip velocity, generating more force to lift leaves and debris up off the ground and into the hamper. Consistent brush to ground contact prevents the unit from"skipping" and passing over sections of leaves and grass clippings on the lawn. By incorporating 6 brush sections, brush to ground contact is significantly improved over traditional 4 brush designs. This is accomplished by reducing"Tip Lift" the time and distance that the brushes lift off the surface of the lawn between strokes. When not in use, the patented self-storing feature allows the unit to be stored upright to minimize the required storage space. Stop raking and put your mower to work with the Brinly 42 in. Lawn Sweeper.

Q:Curious. I have 30 pecan trees and before using bag a nut harvester the ground needs to be clear of leaves and small sticks. Do you think I would be able to raise the sweeper above the pecans but still sweep up leaves and small sticks? would 42BHDK work

Answer This Question

A:  Yes I do. There is plenty of adjustment to raise the brush head. I have a lot of oak trees on my place and this sweeper leaves the acorns but picks up the leaves and small limbs.

by|Jan 30, 2023

A:  Hello Pecandude. Thanks for the question. This is a tough one, as it will do a great job for your leaves, small sticks, and general yard debris. The sweeper can be adjusted up to 3-1/4” and will certainly sweep your leaves and twigs, but I’m not sure it’s not going to pick up your pecans as well. I do not believe this will work for your expectations for this job. I have attached the manual for your convenience. As for the 42BHDK. That will not fit these types of sweepers. I do not think a dethatcher will work either. They work to pull thatch up from the grass, and you would use the sweeper to pick up the thatch. It really doesn’t work like a rake. If you have any questions, please contact customer service at 877.728.8224 or at brinly.com. https://brinly.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/arrrhksqzldvbdkhq5qd.pdf

A:  It might be possible as the sweeper height adjustment is pretty good. The downside is leaves fill up the hopper quickly so there will be many trips to dump it. Why not raise the blades on the mower so it won't hit pecans, cut up the small sticks and leaves, and then sweep them up? If you did that, you could then lower the sweeper brush and possibly sweep up most of the pecans.

Would Not Clean Leaves Any other Way!
I love this lawn sweeper. It has helped me deal with my large 1 acre property with lots of trees. It has turned a 3 day job to a half day job allowing to remove leaves and debris. Its well designed and the construction is solid. I love that its easy to connect to my John Deer garden tractor allowing me to focus on the job instead of the connection. Overall I am happy with this purchase.

                    Excellent product, easy to assemble
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought the product in the winter, left it assembled until I started using it in the summer, however I waited for the low temperatures of autumn to arrive to get a good idea of the experience and the strengths and weaknesses before posting the review. Strong points: Excellent product, easy to assemble and does its job very well. If you have the minimum or skills with tools (knowing how to hold one is enough) you will not find it difficult to assemble this toy. Once mounted, you'll need to do some field testing to find out which height works best with your lawn's reality. For me 3 attempts were enough and I am very happy with the product. On the downside: it's a huge mess to store, but that's not exclusive to this model, so if you're like me and don't have a big garage and need to save everything for the Quebec winter, maybe you need a little tidying up in your shed. , but this would be the same for other makes and models.

                    Disappointed
I had a choice of the Brinly or the Ohio Steel. I went with the Brinly due to the reputation. However, that was quickly met with disappointment. When I lifted the unit up, the metal was so thin it was actually bending around my fingers. Before any use, I noticed the bag was already ripping. This was NOT due to shipping. It is a low quality I am sorry to say.

We've got 3/4 of an acre of grass and we have a riding lawnmower. This Sweeper makes it a sinch to rake. Backing up the Sweeper is a skill but it's great. Don't overfill it or it's to heavy to dump with the pull chord.

Purchased this sweeper about a month ago. Home Depot assembled it for me at no cost. Got it home and adjusted the linkage to match my tractor height and was using it in no time at all. It took a couple of brush height adjustments before I was happy with the results but once that was done the sweeper worked great. I don’t know if they sweeper still has plastic gears but if it does I can see how that might be problematic. If you turn too tight the wheels lock and you basically start dragging the sweeper and putting a lot of stress on the gears. Same thing happens if you set the brush height too low. I’ve used the sweeper 4 times and I am very happy with the results and its ease of use. Totally met my expectations so far.

Plastic drive gear teeth inside wheel wear quickly and strip out
As several people have experienced, the teeth on the plastic molded gear on the wheel wear down and strip out easily with use. I have had mine for a little more than a year; I purchased it on 5/22/15. We found this problem in late August or early September and I had not checked into resolving it until now. I was thinking about throwing this sweeper out, but after spending $269 on this product and getting little more than a year of use, I decided to pursue this with Brinly. When I contacted Brinly customer service, I was first told that the part number, 1008987, was just a wheel. She thought I meant that I needed the pinion (R-2485RH & LH). I explained that the drive gear was molded into the wheel. She then told me she never heard of this problem occurring. As I have read a handful of reviews on Home Depot's website with this problem, I suggested she go to the site and read the reviews, particularly the 1-star reviews. She asked what I was using to pull the sweeper. I use a John Deere lawn tractor. She then told me that I can't go over 3 miles an hour with the sweeper being towed. Anyone ever see a speedometer on a lawn tractor? :) I get that relatively I can go slower, but how do I really know I am under 3 mph? She also suggested that I keep the brushes higher. I do need this to sweep the grass up after I cut. Flat out, terrible design for the drive. The shear strength of the molded teeth is just not high enough for use in this application. If the drive gear were separate from the wheel, as in at least one other model from Brinly, the cost to repair would be considerably less - about $5 per drive gear instead of $40. I am more concerned, however, that after having contacted customer service, I was told that this was not a known problem. I have worked in consumer products and know that when an issue is found that repeats, usually a bulletin is created to let customer service know about it.

                        Hello Number6

Thank you for taking the time to review our sweeper. I apologize for the troubles you had with the gear system.
We have done product testing in house to see what it would take to strip, damage, and destroy all of our products.
With this unit we found that if it is towed faster than 5mph it would cause the gears to wear out like what you are describing. If the brushes are too low to the ground it will cause the gears to stall and skip causing damage. The height of the bushes should always be 1/2 - 1 inch above the grass line so that you are just picking up what is on the surface like leaves or the cut thatch.
We do understand that mowers do not have speedometers so we would also say no faster than a brisk walk. One other thing to watch would be the sharpness of turns. Both wheels are drive wheels and need to spin at the same radius.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.

NOT for ZERO TURN USE!!!!!!!!! (useless you go real sloooooow!!!)
Purchased from Home Depot 24 April 2016. Used 4 times between 24 April- 23 May 2016. Out of town (Not used) from 23 May to 15 August 2016. Used 4 times August 2016. Total times used was 8. Lot size one acre. Plastic wheel gear stripped out on right side of sweeper. Contacted Brinly-Hardy Co. customer service. Brinly-Hardy Co. customer service asked what type of mower I was using. I use a Cub Cadet ZTR 42S tractor (purchased from Home Depot). The product was out of warranty (90 days for gears and wheels) NOT 2-years as identified on the web site, read the fine print, lesson learned!. Since I was utilizing my zero turn tractor, I was going too fast and turning too sharply causing the wheel to lock during the turn and the brush with the steel gear was still turning which caused the plastic wheel gear to strip. Brinly-Hardy Co. customer service stated that since the sweep was new but out of warranty they would discount the wheel, normally $40.43 to $26.28 plus $15.00 shipping. I was told that in the manual there is reference to maximum towing speed and avoid sharp turns. (In my future purchase of a zero turn tractor I'll make a note to purchase one with a MPH gauge???.) Bottom Line Do not use with a Zero Turn Tractor! Home Depot should advise the potential purchaser that this sweeper is NOT intended for zero turn tractors as they go too fast and turn to sharply. $269.00 and another $41.28 for 1/2 season of use.

                          Hi JerriQ,

You are correct, Brinly does not recommend that this unit be towed behind anything other than the standard garden tractor. Sharp turns and fast speeds (no more than 5mph) can cause premature wear on the drive and pinion gears of this unit. If you are going to use this behind a zeroturn unit, to reduce wear make sure wide turns are taken and that both wheels are spinning at the same rate.
If you do have any questions about this product or any other in the Brinly line please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to talk to you.

Good Product, Poor Assembly Instructions (second part of the instructions)
The product is top. I gave it four stars because of the assembly instructions. What a mess. Up to the canopy (or that bag that collects the debris) step by step instructions are top. Every single picture, i.e. pic. 1 corresponds to the pic. 1 hardware package, that is very carefully put on one vacuum sealed sheet. All bolts and nuts are perfectly organized up to the canopy part. They offer some bolts washers and nuts that you will never have to use and they correspond to the pictures on the assembly book. The instructions for the canopy are so poor there is no step by step and basically they give you hardware that use will never have to use. When you start assembling, on some of the frames you see only one pre-drilled hole and you think there must be another one and you drill it. Well, folks you should not do that. I want to say once you get to the canopy part skip few of the prepared bolts and nuts until you see the final picture and you will be fine. If you drill holes you will find yourself searching for a solution to make it good again. To the product and the use of it, it is very easy to use, I want to say a pleasure to use it. I don't have any experience with the plastic toots on the wheels so far, since I've used it only once. A lot of folks are complaining that they wear out very quickly, I can't tell at this stage. I've collected lots of dead grass and roots from previously dethatched lawn as well as the first leafs in the fall. So far so good. I've collected close to 4 full bags of yard waste in absolutely no time and dump them on my compost pile as easy as I collected them. You can never do that so easy with a rake and wheelbarrow on a half of acre. I can't wait for the sweet gum balls to fall down. This year I will win the battle, unless the plastic wheels brake.

                          Gears stripped
This is a great lawn sweeper, but the drive gears on the wheels stripped out. I have a small lot 75" x 200" and wanted it to pick up grass clipping. I only used it 3 or 4 times when I heard the grinding and realized the brush was not turning. The unit was purchased on 07-04-2015. I tried calling Brinley but was put on hold then went into voice mail. Also sent them an email. Still waiting for a return response.
