Can this also be used as a spreader?

Can this also be used as a spreader?
Asked by: Justme
No. This device is designed only to be a core aerator cutting plugs in your lawn to allow the water and fertilizers to penetrate into the root system.

I have 4 acres of lawn. Will this work for me.

Asked by: Gma
That's a lot of lawn. Might take a while, but it will work. Be sure to do the maintenance - clean & oil - when you're finished.

I have a toro 42" deck will this work for me?

Asked by: Bonnie
Yes it will. You will want to pay attention to your side clearance when pulling. It does attach using a basic clevis pin connection making nearly any mower or utility tractor that has a tow plate able to use this. Check the recommendation for engine size needed to pull this implement when weighted and being used.

how does the dirt get ejected from the spoons?

how does the dirt get ejected from the spoons?
Asked by: greg
Plugs get ejected and pushed out by other plugs. Depends on moisture in the soil how smoothly that happens.

Customer Reviews

48 in. Tow-Behind Plug Aerator is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 162.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Plug Aerator for the money I did not find any reviews on the homedepot website about this product so I did A LOT of research before I made my final decision on this aerator. My decision was between the John Deere Aerator, Agi-Fab Aerator and the Brinly Aerator. John Deere was way to expensive (double the price) and Agri-Fab once I saw it in the store just looked unstable and cheap. So I bought the Brinly and here are the Pros: 1. PRICE, 2. very durable, 3. very simple assembly but time consuming, 4. works very well for a tow behind aerator (in wet soil can I am getting plugs to go 2 - 2 1/2 inch deep), 5. can hold up to 150+ in the weight tray (had 2 cider blocks and 2 bags of fertilizer). Cons: when the pacakge arrived the box was torn apart and the bag that held all of the hardware ripped open and was missing a lot of peices (simply called Brinly and they shipped out the parts) - so this is not really a con. Overall a great product made by a great company - highly recommend this tow behing aerator.

Chose this aerator over others due to price, features and other positive reviews. Assembly was not that hard, but the tines are a bit tedious to bolt together. Suggest using a bench vise to hold the tine mount, install the tines using a drill driver and backup wrench. This speeds up tightening the nylock nuts. I've aerated about 3/4 of an acre and am getting up to 4 inch plugs pulled out. Would have given it 5 stars if it had a 2 inch trailer coupler, which I will be welding onto it soon.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Low price, good product I agree with all of the other reviewers, this takes about 2 hours to assemble. Much of that time is attaching the tines, there are 32 of them and each has a nut and bolt. Instructions are fairly clear, but I did put the axle in the wrong side and had to re-do that part, look closely at the picture. I have a John Deere LT150 with a Deere bagger attached and I did have a problem attaching it to the tow point. I had to drop the wheels to lower the towbar angle then it connected fine. If you don't have the bagger attachment, there will be no problem. I tested everything after assembly and it works very well. One consistent complaint is the engagement handle cannot be reached from the tractor seat, this is a weakness but not a deal breaker. Plug aerators are the only way to go, the spike aerators are not much better than no aeration, but using the plug-type, adding some compost to the lawn after aeration, and overseeding really will make for a great result. I have really tight compact soil and I believe this will improve the soil quality over the nest few seasons.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product for residential use After months of research I settled on the Brinly-Hardy 48 in. model. The choice proved to be correct for my acre and a half. All of the parts arrived in the package and was not difficult to assemble. Simply follow the instructions and it doesn't take long, just make sure you are viewing it from the same point of view as the manual when installing the shaft as the handle will only fit one way. Operation is impressive for a residential machine, our soil is a hard pan clay that even commercial rental units struggle to pull 3 inch plugs from. By adding weight and a little water this unit exceeded the 3 inch plugs. the unit is rated for 160 pounds of added weight, but the quality of the unit easily exceeded that. By going slow, planning the route, and taking wide turns I was able to operate it with 270 pounds of weight ( 6 45 pound plates) with no troubles. (Hard Clay Soil) This machine is well built and a great value for the money. I'm sure time will only reinforce this decision.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great! Not that hard to put together with some basic tools. With heavy clay soil, we knew we needed an aerator - especially after getting a quote to have it done! This plug aerator was delivered to our house with the box intact and in good condition. Everything was there, and it took less than two hours to get everything unpacked and put together. I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade, so maybe I have an advantage, but the instructions were straight forward and it went together easily with basic tools. It worked perfectly! I loaded it with about 200lbs of bagged soil and sand that I had laying around and used it the day after a good rain. It removed perfect little 1.5-3" plugs. It seems to have really helped my yard. I look forward to doing it again in the Spring and laying down some fertilizer to get the full benefit. One thing I noticed is that you should remove the weight when finished or it will flat-spot the tires and bow out the tabs that they're attached to. For under $200 delivered, it has already paid for itself with one use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job! The good: The aerator does a great job of churning my yard and doing exactly what it is supposed to do. It is easy to attach, easy to use, and does and even fine job. I expect to get many great years from this machine. The instructions also made assembly quite easy. Good job. The bad: Assembly takes a long time. There are a lot of parts. Understandable, and they make it easy, but it does take a while. Also, and this is true of EVERY plugger I've seen, the plugger always seems to be designed for a hitch that is much higher than what is actually there. The plugger always seems to be bowing to the mower. I would much rather have it level. Just a thought. Also, and this is because of my poor driving, be careful. Because it is wider than my mower I have hit a few fenceposts and other nonmoving objects. It wrecks the wheel. I have bent it back each time, but beware that it is probably wider than your mower, and collisions are not kind to the device, especially be mindful of turns, and backing up is a challenge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT PRODUCT & AN HONEST REVIEW My 1 and only complaint on this aerator is the HANDLE placement... I wish I did not have to get off the mower to engage / disengage the aerator, that is why I gave (EASE OF USE) 4 out of 5 but I understand why they designed it this way as it is safer for the consumer... I had no problems in putting it together & it did not take me long at all. All parts where received and in great condition. I live in TN and I have clay soil so I found it best to use it the day after a good rain with 198 lbs (4) masonry blocks. I have over an acre of lawn and have found this model to better then comparable models & I have used 3 other aerators with poor performance or they just did not last long at all ( with clay soil ) so I returned all of them... BOTTOM LINE IS I WOULD BUY THIS MODEL AGAIN

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Assembly not a problem A big name brand charges $150 more for exact same thing. Wasn't aware green paint was that expensive. Not complicated to assemble, took a couple hours, but there are many pieces and this is not a toy. Instructions were concise, all parts present, no problems encountered during assembly. My time is cheap and I would rather have a less expensive product than pay for 2 hours labor for the factory or someone else to assemble this thing. Use a ratchet socket wrench along with open end wrenches, it goes faster. Got the 48 instead of 40" so I could put more weight on it due to very hard clay. Product seems sturdy and durable and works as expected. Not much else to say about performance, all it does is poke holes in the ground.
