Questions & Answers

Can this unit be intalled in line with the wiring for a bath light switch without the variable speed switch?

Asked by: GHogie
Yes, wired it to an existing receptical but added it's own on/off switch. Fan doesn't really run fast enough to justify a variable speed control.

How does the louvered outlet handle cold weather, considering this model for a house in North Dakota.

Asked by: Arctix
I don't know about North Dakota, but here in southern New Hampshire... We have a heat pump installed outside, unfortunately just below this unit. So the fan from the heat pump blows this open and makes a bit of noise. That isn't really the product's fault. I don't recall wind (other than the heat pump) blowing it open. But, as other reviewers have said, when you cut a hole in your house, you are going to lose some heat. My only complaint about this product is that the louvers have warped in the few years we have had it. One has fallen out. The other two no longer open properly. So I need to replace the external louvered wall cap--part #13 on https://parts.broan-nutone.com/ModelDetail.aspx?modelnumber=512M which costs about half the price of a new unit. Metal louvers would have been more durable.

can this be plugged into a regular outlet, or does it have to be wired into the electric system?

Asked by: Lianne
This will require an electrical plug in outlet, built inside the wall. Might want an electrician to rough this in for you.

I am installing a small bathroom (<100 SQFT) in my basement and I considering using this fan, but I would need approximately 10 ft of 6" duct between the fan and the outside of the exterior wall. Will this fan work for this application?
Asked by: Adam
Yes but use hard pipe and lose the flexible.

Simple enough to install by my contractor and it worked well at first, but 2 years later the exterior plastic flaps warped and cracked and I cannot find something to fit. Really tacky to have duct tape covering my now unusable master bath fan so cold wind and insects don't climb in. I need to find something to replace it and it is over 40 feet high to reach it outside of my house so now I have to pay a handy man or contractor again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good item and quiet operation. Removes air and kitchen odors well. We found this item on Home Depot website and decided it was just the right thing for our project. We needed a kitchen exhaust to the outside of our house and wanted something that looked pleasing. The project was fairly easy requiring approximated 3 hours, but I am only a moderate do-it-yourselfer. Tools needed were; drill, drywall saw and extra wire to run to the switch. We added the switch/outlet combo and ran the wire through the upright joist 2x4 through a hole provided by the drill. In addition, we added the exhaust hood to the outside (also available at Home Depot) even though a plastic vent cover is include in the purchase. The hood was an additional cost, but reasonable and worked well with the fan's fittings. We also painted the vent cover to match the color of the house's exterior. Nice fan and looks and runs great.
