Questions & Answers

Can this unit be intalled in line with the wiring for a bath light switch without the variable speed switch?

Asked by: GHogie
Yes, wired it to an existing receptical but added it's own on/off switch. Fan doesn't really run fast enough to justify a variable speed control.

How does the louvered outlet handle cold weather, considering this model for a house in North Dakota.

Asked by: Arctix
I don't know about North Dakota, but here in southern New Hampshire... We have a heat pump installed outside, unfortunately just below this unit. So the fan from the heat pump blows this open and makes a bit of noise. That isn't really the product's fault. I don't recall wind (other than the heat pump) blowing it open. But, as other reviewers have said, when you cut a hole in your house, you are going to lose some heat. My only complaint about this product is that the louvers have warped in the few years we have had it. One has fallen out. The other two no longer open properly. So I need to replace the external louvered wall cap--part #13 on https://parts.broan-nutone.com/ModelDetail.aspx?modelnumber=512M which costs about half the price of a new unit. Metal louvers would have been more durable.

can this be plugged into a regular outlet, or does it have to be wired into the electric system?

Asked by: Lianne
This will require an electrical plug in outlet, built inside the wall. Might want an electrician to rough this in for you.

I am installing a small bathroom (<100 SQFT) in my basement and I considering using this fan, but I would need approximately 10 ft of 6" duct between the fan and the outside of the exterior wall. Will this fan work for this application?
Asked by: Adam
Yes, it should work fine. I liked the in little be design

I almost didn't buy this fan because they say it fits 5 1/4 inch to 10 inch walls. My walls are only 4 1/2 inches. (stud + 1/2" sheetrock and 1/2" siding) I thought I was going to have to make a spacer out of 3/4 inch wood to fill the gap. I thought I would be able to make it look good, so I went ahead and bought the fan. As it turns out, the fan fits the 4 1/2 inch walls perfectly. (No gaps) They should correct this error because it's probably costing them sales. I could not be more pleased with this purchase. It fit's perfect, installs easily and looks nice, but best of all, it's made with pride in the good ole USA. Broan hit a homerun with this product.

It provided a wall vent for a half-bath on the first floor, where a ceiling vent would have been much more difficult to install. Cons: after about two years, the external louvers warped. One has fallen out. The other two no longer open properly. Metal louvers would have been more durable. This isn't even the sunny side of the house. You can get replacement parts. But this part is half the cost of the whole unit.

It moves air effectively and was easy to install. It won't move a huge amount of air, so keep that in mind if you are looking to vent a big room. Outdoor flaps are definitely flimsy, and I forsee that being an issue in a few years, however it is not a bad fan.
