How I Installed the Hot Air Remover in the Attic
After noticing the 15 year old home we purchased and moved into in Virginia had no attic exhaust system, and being involved in multi-tasking to the eyeballs for over 90 days in home move-in chores, I first contacted local professional a.c. and handy-folk and the quotes I got made me wish I had not retired. By cruising the Home Depot array of products in the store near us and reading the available reviews on-line, including additional units which are not carried in the local store, I picked out one of the Broan products, a 1600 CFM Gable Mount fan with thermostat and used the advice I saw in other reviews on-line at the Home Depot website for install tips. The unit is up and working quite well. Although it can be heard while standing on our side driveway, it is not what I would call noisy and even in the room below the attic, an upstairs guest bedroom, the noise level, though noticeable, is nothing more than white noise IMO. That said, I did install a switch for shutting the fan off in the event of a maintenance issue or a guest concern. I did use a plywood backer board onto which the fan is mounted via the included metal brackets after I cut the hole to fit the 15" diameter sheet metal shroud around the fan and I did use foam insulation on the face of the mounting to absorb the limited vibration I noted and I used silicone sealant in the open spaces between my hole-cut and the metal fan shroud. I mounted the board with fan attached right behind and existing louvered gable screened opening high in the exterior wall at the eve. Last evening after a warm day, I went up the stairs to the attic to check the temperature around 10 p.m. and and the air temperature in the attic was just about equal to the lowering outside temperature. The ventilator fan had already shut off via the thermostat control. This purchase was made through the aegis of the Home Depot website, with pickup at an HD not far away in less than a week. My wife even obtained help from a customer service agent in Atlanta in combining this purchase with another which is a back order in order to receive a new resident discount. She/we could not have been happier with this little transaction. We are regular customers of our Home Depot.

great product; wonderful results
The installation of this product was straight forward. Mounting it on a 3/4 inch piece of plywood nailed on the gable wall created a great seal. Although you can hear the fan from outside the house, it is not too bad in the room directly under it. A kill switch was wired into the circuit and placed inside the closet of the room directly below the fan. However, my wife doesn't find the fan noise disturbing and she noticed a marked difference in the temperature of the house after the fan was installed. This product performs as advertised.

This was a replacement of a 20 yr old unit that stopped working, so installing it was pretty straight forward. It is much quieter than the Broan unit it replaced. My only issue is that it seems like the thermostat is off by about 10 degrees. For example, if you want it to turn on at 100 degrees you have to set the thermostat to 110 degrees. It took a lot of trial and error to get the right temperature settings.

      Not trustworthy
I bought this fan last year, I know for certain. (35326-A) Now that we're getting some hot days, I'm hearing the fan cycling on and off. Runs about 15 seconds, off for about 1 minute, repeat until the attic cools. Unacceptable in a brand I thought I should trust.

Awesome fan! Comes on regularly and reliably for years now! Ventilating the attic is very important! Get it before you face costly roof repairs and replacement! It actually makes your house cooler in the summer as well.

Purchased the Broan gable mount vent during the hot summer. Within three months, the thermostat starting going bad. Then it started working again for a month and then it went bad again. Kept trying to start but couldn't and would make an awful noise. When I contacted Broan NuTone, they would only send a new thermostat, but would not guarantee that was the problem. I then contacted Home Depot and they got me a whole new unit. Will have to wait til next summer to see if it works better than the first one. I will give 5 stars to Home Depot's Customer Service while the manufacturer gets only 1.

Seems to be a good quality fan. We have Broan bathroom fans that have worked well for years so figured I try a Broan attic fan. This replaced an existing fan that had died. That made installation much easier. Size was the same so physical install was a snap. I prewired as much as I could before going up into the 100+ degree attic. There was a switch in the attic from the previous fan so i didn't have to cut all power. After wiring it into the circuit and flipping the switch it worked fine. Two issues though. I discovered a problem with one row of screws that mount the brackets to the housing. They are sheetmetal screws that protrude into the housing. That row lined right up with the fan blade and on start up the blade edges hit the end of the screws. It wasn't much but enough of a problem. I just installed bolts from the inside and nuts on the outside. Easy fix but Broan could do a better design. The other issue is a complaint I saw in other reviews. It's much louder than our previous one. I don't know if that's due to the high CFM (1600) or something else. Still happy with it especially with the heat wave we just went through. Kept the house much cooler than the previous fan did in similar heat.

Thermostat does not shutoff the fan even when temp is 20° cooler than setting (80 deg attic with 100 deg setting). My guess is that the heat from the motor is affecting the measurement, being right next to each other. Saving a few cents on wire connectors and cable attachment to box widget forces you to make an extra trip to the hardware store to procure them. I hope the fan delivers on longevity.

          Thermostat knob broke
The installation went great. I gave it a short test and it seemed to work fine and it was fairly quiet. Then I tried to adjust the thermostat and the white knob came off. Looked at the thermostat and there is a hole but nothing there to attach the knob to. Apparently the thing it attaches to fell inside the sealed thermostat. Now what? There is no warning about this in the instructions. This is a design and documentation failure.

Great fan for my attic. Same brand I had before. The only complaint is that I can hear the fan in the bedroom below the fan. So it’s a little louder than would have liked. It shuts off at night and under 125 in the attic so it isn’t that bad

It has significantly lowered the temperature in our attic, and consequently made the house below much cooler. We definitely don't have to use our AC as much as before. Wow I should have gotten this year's ago. Big help with electric bill. SCE came to our home and did a number of thing freely! (new thermostat and some LED bulbs, and etc) that have helped but not as much as this. SCE should do this through their Weatherization program. Shipping was quick and I had an electrical person install it. Not expensive to install and it's very quiet. This model has a thermostat that turns it on an off when the temperature you've set is reached.

            Doesn't Last
Mine was a challenge to install (due to my house layout, not the product's fault)... crawling thru fiberglass insulation to get to the gable. Once installed, it lasted about 2 years. Then just quit dead. I haven't tried to get to it to replace or repair it. When I did have it working, I think it was of some help in keeping the attic cooler in the hot months. However, very disappointed it konked out in such a short time. Only one year warranty... for a reason I guess! :-(

Pushes a lot air. Installed just a couple weeks ago, so no idea about longevity. No significant vibration, but noisier than expected, and I wouldn't recommend installing above a bedroom. Wish it came with a firestat - a device that opens the circuit when temperature in the attic exceeds 140F or so, to prevent the fan from stoking a fire, if it happens. The self-tapping screws attaching the brackets to the enclosure seem not beefy enough to hold the weight over time and are possibly at risk of loosening themselves, if the fan vibrates too much. Secure with Loctite if you can. I attached it to a piece of plywood with a round hole cut in the center, which is in turn screwed to the studs. All gaps were blocked and sealed with silicone. This creates a 3-1/2" deep box, to help the air flow around obstructions before it hits the wall. Following someone's advice, enlarged the holes and used rubber grommets to mount the brackets to the plywood instead of direct contact, to reduce the risk of vibration. Didn't find the attached thermostat usable, because the fan is in a hard to access place, so installed a remote one and just used the attached box for wiring. Added a dehumidistat to control attic humidity in the winter. Also added a bypass switch, next to the shutoff. Makes the wiring a bit more complicated, but worth it because I can turn it on or off, regardless of temperature or humidity.
