Product Overview

Broan Solar Powered Attic Ventilators use energy from the sun to operate and require no additional electricity, which means you save up to $180 per year that you might pay to operate an electric powered attic ventilator, depending on your local electric rates, size of attic, climate, etc... Plus, you can save even more with a 30% Federal Tax Credit on both the purchase price and installation costs of your Solar Powered Attic Ventilation. Because Broan Solar Powered Attic Ventilators operate without fuel, waste, or pollution, they earn points towards Green building. So you can save money on electricity without using any to do it, which is green for the environment, and puts some extra green in your wallet. For most roofs, our one piece Solar Powered Attic Ventilator is the perfect solution. Because our solar cells are highly efficient at capturing the sun's energy, there is no need for unsightly raised panels or tracking systems. Instead, what you see is a low profile ventilator in a contoured design that integrates well with the roof.
  • 28-watt solar panel captures sunlight from dawn to dusk and efficiently converts it into electric power to keep your attic cool and dry all day long, providing 537 Maximum CFM and year round protection for the structure of your home
  • 12" diameter, one-piece aluminum 5-blade fan is pitched for maximum air flow to keep your living area cooler, extend the life of your air conditioner and save energy and money
  • Compact base footprint means fewer shingles to cut for easier, faster installation
  • Low profile, integrated design for an attractive, unobtrusive addition to your roof without the need for props or pivoting stands used by some manufacturers
  • Rugged, tempered glass solar panel withstands large hail and won't delaminate so you can be confident in its reliability, functionality and attractive appearance
  • Housing is a molded design of UV-stabilized, color-dyed, rugged ABS plastic that withstands hail and resists fading to remain attractive for years; may also be painted to match your roof color
  • Housing frame features positive stops to "seat" the dome for fast, easy installation
  • Direct-current, variable voltage motor is dynamically balanced for superior performance and silent operation for years of worry-free operation
  • Includes stainless steel fasteners and galvanized steel brackets for durability and corrosion resistance, and aluminum, heavy-gauge screen to keep out insects, animals or birds without impeding airflow
  • Optional thermostat is easy to install and disables the motor when the temperature dips below 50-degrees, to extend motor life; recommended for climates where cold weather condensation isn't a concern
  • Aluminum screen provides protection from animals without impeding airflow
  • Federal tax credit may apply, see https://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=tax_credits.tx_index
  • Variable speed motor enables the fan to begin turning slowly when the sun first comes up or on overcast days

Thank you for reaching out to us on the Broan-NuTone 345SOWW. OUr Technical Support Department can be reached at 1-800-637-1453 between 7:30 AM and 6:00 PM (CST) Monday-Friday. They can answer installation and product questions.

Will this unit continue to run after the sun goes down? If so, for approximately how long?

Asked by RichardR June 17, 2020

The 345SOBK works from dawn to dusk. There may be some residual power that might allow it to run after dusk for a short time, but it would not run all night long. Typically the heat is reduced at night you may want to consider an AC powered unit if running it at night is a necessity.

Can the fan be reversed to draw air inward?

Asked by Jimmy January 8, 2020

The 345SOBK unit is designed to exhaust air. It does not have a reversible motor.

What is the difference between surface mount and curb mount?

Asked by john June 4, 2019

For assistance on this, it might be best to communicate with our Technical Support Department. They can be reached at 800-637-1453. Thank you.

Is there a thermostat?

Asked by atticpro May 7, 2019

As I recall the thermostat was optional. I did get one. It shuts the unit off at temperature below 65F. It's not all that satisfactory as it's mounted in the top hat and gets heat from the sun even in winter so the unit can turn on and run for a while before cooler attic air cools the thermostat and turns the unit off. As such, it cycles on needlessly in winter when it is sunny.. In winter I don't want cool outside air to be pulled into the attic and thereby pull some heat out of the house when I'm heating the house. But, I guess the thermostat does reduce winter running time so it helps a bit. See my review about the problems I had with this unit ... I lost a summer of cooling because it pretty much fell apart. I was able to repair it though.

Asked by Sparky December 22, 2018

The low temps shouldn't affect motor life.

Asked by bernard November 16, 2017

Please contact your local Home Depot store for installation assistance.

Is the motor brushless?

Asked by Nels January 9, 2017

No. It feels brushless when you give it a spin, but there are what appear to be brush holders on either side at the back of the unit. Mine did lock-up for a season so had daily voltage applied with the motor not turning. The brushes and commutator seem to have survived this because it's running okay after being repaired. See my review on the problems I had.

Does the optional thermostat come with this vent or must it be purchased separately?

Asked by jay November 2, 2016

Thank you for your interest in our Solar powered products. The thermostat is a separate purchase. Our model number for the thermostat is CWT45, and it can be purchased on Home Depot's site. If you have further questions about this model, dial 888-336-6151 and our Technical Support Department can assist you further. Thanks, again.

What is the voltage of the dc motor?

Asked by TH July 18, 2016

Thank you for the question. This unit is offered with a 120 VAC motor. Contact Technical Support at 888-336-6151 for further information.

Just installed it and it seems to operate as claimed. Looking forward to cooler attic temps.

Powerful fan. Almost perfect product...
This fan was a straightforward, simple install. It can move some serious air when the heat hits hard (100+ in my area)! I immediately noticed a big difference in my 1949 home. Unfortunately, after running for about two months, the fan stopped working because the bracing holding the motor got loose. The motor slid downward to the point where the fan blades started hitting the braces that attach the hood to the base. Eventually the fan blades got lodged against the bracing and the fan stopped moving. Luckily the motor did not burn out and I was able to shove in a couple of wedges and tie wraps to prevent this from happening again (see picture). This fan does run pretty hard so my guess is that the bracing wasn't tight enough coming from the factory. Other than that little issue, this is a great fan. A bit pricey for my taste but it's a simple DIY so it's worth the price.

The housing is good. The solar panel is still working after one year. The motor still runs. Not so much the rest. The blade is off-center and shakes the unit. The motor clamp is larger than the motor so does not hold the motor securely. The fan vibration caused the motor to slip down 2 inches within days. When the motor sagged the fan blades hit the top unit supports and stopped spinning. For months the motor had power but was not turning. However, after repairing the unit, using locktite on the screws, shimming the motor with gasket material and 3M weather strip adhesive, it's working again. It shakes some but hopefully will hang together for a while. If you buy this model, check it over for these faults and fix them before mounting it. Getting the top half (motor is in the top half) off and then back in place is a job for two highly dexterous persons.

Is great
I bought 2 and installed in the Spring. House is 3000 sf. Our bill showed about 25% less KH used this year compared to last year for the warm months. We bought the optional thermostat. A great investment for your home
