Will this fan work on a double 5/8" sheetrock wall?

Asked by CB July 13, 2020

Answer

The EZ80N can be mounted/installed in flat ceilings or sloped ceilings up to 12/12 pitch. A wall mount is not recommended. If you have further technical or installation questions, please contact our Broan-NuTone Technical Support Department at 1-888-336-6151 between 8:30 AM and 7:00 PM (EST) Monday-Friday.

What if existing wiring is too short

Since, according to many building codes, you cannot just connect a stub piece of wire to lengthen it, you would most likely need to trace your wire back to the nearest junction box and replace that segment of wire with a longer one. You might get lucky and find a loop of the wire segment tied up somewhere which would allow you to pull more wire to reach your fan.

Can be used with a duct exit in the soffit?

Yes but if you are installing in an attic that is cold in the winter make sure to use an insulated duct. Otherwise steam from the bathroom condenses in the duct in the cold attic and filling the duct with water.

How far can i vent this out? 15’ of 4 “ flex duct with a wall flapper kit. Ez fit 80 cfm. Nutone bath fan.

The 15ft of duct and 80cfm fan should be no problem if the bathroom is no larger than 70 to 80 SF. If you live in a cold climate, make sure there are no low spots in the duct for condensation to collect and freeze up. See www.hvi.org/publications/bathroom_exhaust_fans.cfm for more info.

Can it be installed in a ceiling with blown in insulation covering it?

Yes, but be prepared for a mess as was the case in my house. I purchased some 6" blanket insulation and cut a piece long enough to cover the 'hole' before installing the box. Any air gaps alongside the box can be filled with spray-in foam insulation.

It is a high capacity exhaust fan so it moves a lot of air. Depending on frequency of use, once a month should do, or every two weeks if cleanliness is especially important to you.

I bought this EZ Fit 80 CFM for my small powder room, but the fan didn't perform well at all. After the installation, I first tested the fan with a toilet paper, but it didn't work properly, meaning the fan didn't seem to pull much air. When I talked to NuTone customer support, they told me to test it with a candle light and blow it out to make some smoke which I did, but again the fan was too weak to suck up any air. I called Nutone several times after the first contact, video taped showing how weak the exhausting power is, and sent the video link to NuTone. NuTone but then, without any hesitation, jumped to a conclusion that the slow airflow rate is either with some poor flex duct work, or due to some obstacles blocking the damper. Accordingly, NuTone suggested that I remove the damper, the existing 4" duct, and turned it on again to see if there is any difference. Of course, no difference... After so much hassles trying to figure out what is causing the problem, I sent the link of the second video to NuTone to prove that the fan is still not working properly. NuTone then sent a simple message that they will send me a new fan assembly which was not only very disappointing response, but was another run around. Instead, I ran to HomeDepot and bought exactly same product just to find out the root cause of the problem. I disconnected the electrical wires, removed the duct work, and completely removed the housing. I re-installed the new housing, and tested the new fan assembly and the housing respectively. Interestingly, I found out that the problem was with the faulty CAPACITOR, not damper, not flex duct, not fan assembly!!! I didn't have to go through all these hassles if NuTone customer support was really there to help out the customers. NuTone customer support do not seem to care... no better than talking to automated answering machine. So my conclusion is: 1. Be aware that some of these NuTone products come with faulty parts such as capacitors. 2. NuTone customer support tends to presume that inappropriate performance of the product is mainly because of wrong installation by DIY people like me. No evidence of respecting consumers' opinion. 3. After all, I find that the noise level of this product is way more than 1.0 sones. I will go with different brand for my another bathroom. Unfortunately, I have to keep this fan because of the fairly big size ceiling cutout of 12.25" x 10.75", but would not recommend this product. Terrible experience with NuTone.

We are very sorry to learn of your experience with your EZ80N unit and your contact with our Technical Support team. Unfortunately, Technical Support would not be able to diagnose a bad capacitor over the phone or in an email. The new fan assembly we were sending you would have included the capacitor and would have then resolved the issue you were experiencing. Unfortunately, installation issues including duct type, size, and length are something we encounter quite often. We do have to ask more information about how the unit is installed in order to try to help troubleshoot the best we can. We are not at your location, so our advisers try to help the best they can over the telephone. We are truly sorry for your negative experience and please know we are here to support you and our products the very best we can. We do appreciate your feedback.

Simple and easy to install - in theory. The roof of my home is framed with roof trusses 24" on center, and the bottom chord is a 2 x 4 member. So you can't get nails in the top of the box to keep it from sagging. That's where the adjustable tabs come in handy to support the other side of the box. Also, the existing fan had 3" round ducting. The included 4" x 3" reducer came in handy. Naturally, the position of the existing duct and wiring were reversed, so I had to pre-drill new holes in the opposite side of the box to fasten it to the truss. If it hadn't been for unknown challenges, and falling blown in insulation, it would have taken less than 1 1/2 hours to install. However, I have learned that most renovation projects take twice as long as you think it will. Final installation looks and works great!

Took me a couple of hours to install. Instructions were easy and accurate. Compared to many other reviews though, I wouldn't call this fan quiet. Sound meter measured 58db at 3ft. Very noticeable but no objectionable. It is somewhat quieter than the 50yr old fan it replaced which was more noise than exhaust. Was expecting more air movement based on reviews. Barely perceptible. Just installed it today so will check if it can keep up with hot shower humidity on the mirror. I did notice when mating the fan unit with the housing, the square exhaust port is not fully sealed between the two so the fan pushes a noticeable amount of air down through the gap back into the room. I sealed it with some HVAC tape. See picture. Didn't detect any other air around the gap. Ideally, Nutone should have supplied a thin gasket to seal the exhaust port so the fan really acts like an exhaust fan. Quick connects for the existing wiring make electrical a snap. This was a replacement so the fan has swing-out wings to clamp to existing ceiling but it can be used in new construction as well.

Easy to install. I have 3" ducting in my attic which I cannot access. This was the only exhaust fan compatible with 3" and 4" ducting at the rated CFM, which made it appropriate for my bathroom's square footage. It effectively exhausts my bathroom.

(What's this)
Works perfectly and is appealing to the eyes. I had to do a fresh install. Located a beam and tapes the cardboard layout provided and made my cut with a hand saw. The cutout perfectly fits the shape of the product so that there isn't a large air gap between unit and drywall. Instructions were easy to follow and read. Fan isn't as noisy as some I have heard. It comes with a vent adapter so you can use round vent tubing to direct the exhaust.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
When I ordered this fan I expected it to be about 9" by 9" square. Now that I have it in my hands... wow, it's huge. I wanted something with a smaller footprint for our basement bathroom, but ultimately it's my fault for not paying more attention to the dimensions listed on the product page. I feel like this would be better suited for a large bathroom because it's size is so dominating on a small ceiling. I can't comment on how hard it is to use to retrofit an existing fan, since I installed it in new construction using flexible ducting. Installing it in an open ceiling went very smoothly and the fan performs very well. The noise output is lower than I expected, most likely thanks to its large overall size and 80cfm rating. If you were hoping it would be useful for covering up "unflattering" sounds this probably wouldn't be a good choice.
