It does require a switch to operate properly. An electrician can install a switch for you, for a fee, and of course the proper permits. I would suggest that if you go to that expense, you have the fan and light connected to separate switches. Some times I would like to have the light on without the fan.

How do i get the flap to shut or is it supposed to stay open

Asked by Mikes December 31, 2018

Answers

No, the flap is supposed to close, when the fan is not in use. There could be a number of reasons your flap won't close, from a manufacturing defect to an uneven ceiling. One option is to insert a small screw at the bottom of the flap as a weight to close the flap. Be sure to use the smallest screw possible to accomplish closure while allowing the flap to open when the fan is running. In the alternative, you could use adhesive to mount a weight on the bottom of the flap to close it while the fan is not in use. However, make sure the weight does not prevent the flap from opening when the fan is in use.

How do you remove bath fan cover to clean

Asked by Mike52 August 8, 2018

Answers

The fan cover on the AR80L works similar to covers I have needed to clean on other fans: Gently pull down on the cover, and release the springs. However, you will need to unplug the light from its connector if you wish to wash it. The light fixture is held in with four tabs, that if carefully pulled back, will allow you to remove the fixture from the main cover. I would not recommend washing the cover with the light fixture in place.

Is this fan wired so I can control fan on a timer and the switch the light separately?

Asked by Handywoman June 27, 2018

Answers

The fan comes with the wires to separate the fan and light. The white wire is your neutral, the green your ground, the black is power for the fan, and the blue/red is for the light. In order to wire it this way you must have a 3 wire running from your switch box to your fan unit. They share the neutral and the ground. The black goes to your fan timer and the blue goes to your light switch.

This exhaust fan is working well. Purchased 1 month ago. The sones of 1.5 make it quiet enough to hear in the next room and still loud enough to know it's on and working. You do need to try different bulbs to find the right brightness that you're looking for. I don't like the light/fan cover, however. The slots are vertical which show all the electrical wires and box which is ugly to look at. Maybe future fans will put the slots on an angle so you can't see the hardware!

Fan noise is acceptable. Light is better than expected. Easy install but dont get the associated Broan Nutone install kit. That particular additional install kit they offer is light weight and junky and relatively expensive, so instead use the Everbuilt vent products across the aisle. This fan is a good 4 inch vent tube product for a small to midsize bathroom up to a hundred square feet. No 6 inch vent necessary. You may need the additional install brackets though depending on your install situation; we didn't because we had the sub floor torn up off the upstairs bathroom reno at the time and it gave easy access to the downstairs bathroom ceiling.

this fan moves a lot of air for a little unit, this unit replaced a 14 year old smaller unit that was on the loud side. so when i seen the fan on this one was kinda wondering if it maybe louder. well its not at all louder and actually significantly quieter and it clears out the steam much quicker. one nice thing is it come with the baffle and outlet connector making installation easier, its size did require minimal drywall removal. the light is a nice feature i never would have thought was necessary but turns out its nice to have. great bathroom fan and its a good upgrade for those older units and at a reasonable price level.

The Broan Invent A50L 50 CFM exhaust fan is a well designed unit. This fan can be used in the kitchen or bath as the fan as the blower is made with sturdy plastic material which helps in humid conditions. I found the installation process much more convenient because you first mount the housing, then the exhaust thru the housing, then snap in the blower. The instructions are clear and well written. The fan is very quiet and the grille with the light look very attractive.

This review might help some folks with the spring issue! I purchased this light/fan combo for a rental unit to install over a shower (in a GFCI protected circuit) where there was no fan before. Installation of the unit itself was very easy - until it came time to attach the grille! Like most other reviewers, I had a bear of a time trying to get the cover installed. At first, I was of the opinion that the designer of the spring clips deserved to be shot, but as time dragged on and my frustration grew, I decided that nothing less than a slow and extremely painful death would suffice! After nearly an hour on a ladder trying to install the grille, I came here to search the reviews for clues or at least write a scathing 1 star review. After coming across a review talking about a U shape vs a V shape, I misinterpreted what the reviewer was trying to say and I bent the legs of my springs straight to form more of a V than a U. (I realize now what they were saying, and I will describe below.) That did allow the cover to go on much easier, however the cover was too heavy for the springs and would sag down on one side, and it would also not stay centered over the opening. In the midst of my preparations to commit harikari, the solution suddenly came to me! When I originally started to install the cover, I had looked at the pre-installed clips and decided that it looked like the factory had installed them backwards. So I removed them and flipped them over, so that the legs of the clip would go up into the housing and the cover would hang from the little coiled circle on the springs. I wonder how many people having spring problems did the same thing? THAT was my main problem - the way the springs were attached at the factory is actually the correct way. The legs of the spring are supposed to be against the bottom of the grille, and the little coiled circle faces up towards the ceiling rather than down towards the floor. If you look at the legs of the springs, when it is at rest, the spring forms a sort of U shape. What you are supposed to do is to continue bending the spring such that the U shape flattens out and then forms a V on the other side. (Picture straightening out your arm and then continuing to bend it such that your elbow is bending the wrong way.) Said another way, with the springs in the correct orientation, the legs of the springs should be concave, not convex. Once I figured out the correct way to bend the spring, the cover went on easily and held fairly tight. I had already straightened the legs of my clips as mentioned above, but I'm thinking that wasn't necessary - the spring would probably hold even tighter if I had not done that, however after going through all this trouble, I did not bother to take the grill back off and bend the legs back! I am going to try to attach a few photos to this review, one of which will be a drawing showing the proper spring orientation. The photo will probably make more sense than my description above. I hope this helps someone out! (Please excuse my complete lack of drawing ability.) I will also attach a photo showing my clip installed in the grille (note that I had previously bent the legs of my clip straight, so your clip will have curved legs). So far, I am happy with the fan itself, and I will probably try another one in the future to confirm my suspicion about the springs, but I am giving it a 2 star review because the way the springs were supposed to work was not obvious and the instructions were absolutely horrible in that they did not describe how to attach the grille to the fan. A simple diagram would have prevented so much wasted time and grief! This is an especially glaring omission on a product marketed to DIYers. The spring design is also unnecessarily complex. As other reviewers have noted, some screws (or even a single screw) to attach the grille would work just fine. Especially on this model where the light lens is detachable, negating the need to detach the grille in order to change the light bulb.

Thank you for taking the time to review your ARN80L ventilation fan. You are correct. When the grille springs are installed on the grille from the factory, the loops should be pointing out not in. We have upgraded the springs on this model, so if you would like a new set sent to you, please contact our Technical Support at 800-637-1453 and we can sent you a pair. Thank you for your informative feedback and we do hope you will enjoy your new fan and light.

Installation was easy, and the instructions were reasonably clear. However, as others have reported, I was very frustrated by the poor design of the spring clips, which kept popping loose and stubbornly resisted when I tried to push the grille up to the ceiling. [SOLUTION] I decided to try bending the curved sides of the spring nearly straight, so they looked like a broad "v", and that did the trick nicely. I would have given this product five stars had it not been for the issue with the springs.

Wish I would have read reviews before purchasing. I haven't even gotten to install the cover & hope I don't have to fight with springs as others complain about. What I noticed is the dampener WILL NOT CLOSE. The flap in its natural position leaves an opening about 3" wide. . . it isn't even remotely close to being closed. Even if I force it closed with my hand the flapper has an eighth inch gap or more. I could have saved money by not buying this piece of junk and simply left a window open 24 hours a day, same difference. Even more frustrating is that I told the person working at Home Depot I don't care what it costs, I just want a quality made unit that does what it is supposed to do. This is four times more expensive than the cheapest units.

Thank you for your comments on the model ARN80L ventilation fan with light. The damper is designed to stay open slightly so the heat from the bulb can be released. This is a normal function of the damper. Should you have an issue with the springs, please contact us directly and we would be happy to send you an updated pair of springs out to you at no charge. Should you wish to speak to someone directly about the damper, please contact our Technical Support Department directly at 888-336-6151. Thank you for your review and your feedback.

This was marketed as a <1 Sone fan. What a joke. It was as loud as the cheap builders one I was replacing. I returned one fan, and as soon as the contractor can get back here and take the second one OUT of the bathroom, I will also return that one. I feel like I was duped by Brian-Nutone. Will never purchase that brand again.
