Asked by dd February 21, 2021

Answer

The AERN110K should accommodate a thicker ceiling. We would encourage you to review the retrofit installation section. it will indicate that the installer must bend the ears flat against the housing to get the extra depth. Go to www.broan.com, type in the model number, scroll down to 'View" and then DOWNLOADS.

Recessed installation means the housing of the unit is installed in a hole in the ceiling. The only piece you will see once installed is the grille cover. Surface or flat would mean the whole unit is installed on top of a surface. All our exhaust fans are made for recessed installation.

Having recently installed it, I think you could install it in any orientation to the ceiling, but you cannot change the exhaust port location, you would have to be able to move the exhaust hose to accommodate.

Design flaw results in rattling backdraft damper, do not recommend
The fan itself is very quiet as advertised. But, as you may read in other reviews, the backdraft damper rattles thus eliminating much of the reason for getting a quiet fan. I contacted Broan and after about 15 minutes on hold, an agent offered to send me a replacement part for the backdraft damper. The part arrived today and it is only very slightly modified from the original. The housing around the louver's pins has been extended and a small amount of some sort of lubricant was put in the holes. This didn't help the situation at all as the louver can still rattle back and forth. I packed the small housings previously mentioned with Vaseline and then capped off the holes with hot glue (see picture), and while the damper still rattles a little bit, it's definitely not as bad. I'm sure some thicker grease would do the job better but I used what I had. Save yourself the trouble and buy a different fan.

Response from NuToneCustomerSupportFeb 15, 2021
Hi ChrisP, Thank you for your feedback on model AERN80K. We are sorry to hear you are disappointed with the damper of this fan. We do not recommend using Vaseline or Hot Glue on our units This could restrict the damper from opening to remove the moisture from the room and in turn effect the performance of the unit. Please reach out to our Technical Support Team again at 888-336-6151 for additional assistance.

Easy to install but not as visually appealing as it seems
At first I loved the idea of a grateless exhaust fan in my bathroom but after I installed it i’m a bit disappointed. It’s just a overly large protruding square from my ceiling. I just feel the cover is far larger than it needs to be as the opening is only 10” at it’s widest part and this is 12.25” which to me is unnecessary. In hindsight I would prefer a traditional style grille.

Efficiency and simplicity
Replaced a ceiling light with this room side series 80 ventilation fan in our 63-year-old home. I did mount the unit to a stud above the unit With the mounting years and it’s solid. Unit runs great. Even better than expected. Now we can use that spare shower. My daughter and I had great fun and learned a lot.

If you are a DIY person or understand basic construction, it will be simple to install. I have a small bathroom that gathers a lot of steam and condensation when using the shower. After installing this unit it lessened the time considerably it took to remove the moisture in this bathroom. I replaced an older Nu tone (with this newer model) that had become noisy and took 5-10 times longer to remove the same amount of moisture. It has been about two months and it works great. It is noticeably quieter than the one we replaced. It has exceeded my expectations. Great price and easy install.

Whisper quiet with all the air flow
This fan is whisper quiet and does an excellent job at moving humidity out of a bathroom. The template on the side of the box was handy. This could be a true room side installation, however in my case a 3" vent was used and this fan has a 4" vent. The instructions are not clear on where to secure into the joist from below as to not interfere with the inner fan. This box is also tall, nearly the height of a 2 x 6. I opted to replace the vent since I had clear attic access. Otherwise I would have used a reducer and may have not had the same quiet results. The vent looks great compared to the standard builder grade. I'll be putting more of these in.

Installation is as easy or hard as your wall or ceiling access represents. I did a brand new installation and had cutting and drywall repairs. I bought a Broan kit to run the duct and exterior wall vent. I would recommend to also purchase the heavier duty duct since you don't want to have a reason down the road to tear open your ceiling because a flimsy collapsible dryer style duct failed. The unit had good instructions and simple wiring. My only critique was that the mounting configuration was only on one side not offering at least a cross angle to mount. I had to mount my unit further back than I would have preferred to mount in the only position possible. It is very quiet and I love the flush cover without the old dated grate look. I did also add a Dewstop humistat sensor switch that automatically turns it on when it senses moisture. It made it an even more seamless reason to install. Very pleased overall.

Sleek ,quite, and powerful. This fan is a great way to upgrade your bathroom and some style and more ventilation. It gets the moisture out of your bathroom quickly and it's very quiet. When I'm in the shower I only hear the shower and not a loud fan any more. Also, our mirror and walls are no longer steamed up. The fan itself is so discrete, I usually forget it's there or that it's running. I'm really happy with it. My bathroom situation: Our home only has one bathroom and 3 people are using it for showers 3 times a day. The bathroom itself only 5'x8' and technically our little 70 cfm fan should have been adequate but it wasn't. Our bathroom was having a major moisture issue, even though I would run the fan long after the shower was over and leave the door open. I wanted to upgrade to a bigger fan but didn't want a giant vent on the ceiling because our ceilings are only 8' high and the dimensions are 8'x5' and a huge fan grate would look ugly and disproportionate. This fan has a slim line discrete grill that just about disappears once installed. The fan itself is easy to install. I had installed the previous fan and I installed this one as well. The box come with a template so you cut the right size hole. I think for me, cutting the hole was the most intimidating part. But the vent cover is actually slightly bigger than the actual hole in the ceiling so it will cover and mistakes you made. I cut the opening too big, so I just caulked around the opening to make sure there was a tight seal. I also taped a trash bag to the ceiling to catch any debris from the attic. Our attack has vermiculite and cellulose and it's so messy. I did the cutting from inside the attic, but you can do it from the bathroom if you prefer. All in all this is a great option for your bath if the cfm suits your dimensions. It's great for small baths because of it's discrete design. I don't think you can have too much cfm in my book. More cfm means faster removal of steam or unwanted odors. It's easy to install and is a nice way to upgrade your bath. It's also reasonably priced too.
