My contractor mentioned needing a rubber boot where this would come through the roof. However, this products looks like it does not have something like this, just a metal duct-like end. Would I need to purchase something separate or is this intended to be installed without a rubber boot?
Asked by: DIYguy
I've got one installed on an asphalt roof. Maybe he is talking about a metal roof??? I never heard of the rubber boot thing. I don't remember Brown's instructions mentioning this. It is installed just like your typical roof vent. You put roof tar around the flat metal part that comes in contact with your roof and you push the top of the flat metal piece under your shingles and nail it in. I haven't had any problems. Mine came with pretty good directions, just follow them. If you live in an area where it gets cold in the winter, you should use 6 inch duct insulation along the entire run of you 6 inch duct, from inside of roof to the ceiling where it enters you kitchen. If you don't condensation will run down the duct work and water will drip all over your ceiling and eventually damage the drywall.

Can this roof cap be used for exhausting a range hood?

Asked by: Nino
That's what it is designed for. This is a very well made roof cap. I looked at a lot of them. This one is made of a thicker metal compared to the less expensive ones. I haven't had any problems with mine.

Does the Broan 634M Roof Cap have a 6" stem that protrudes into the attic (for direct attachment of a 6" bath exhaust fan duct)?

Picture and description do not mention a stem on the product, although it is specified for 6" applications.
Asked by: Paul
It mated to standard 6" round ducting well but the stem from the cap protruded about 1.5" therefrom the cap. So to make the connection easier, I initially attached a short (@ 3") straight length of 6" round ducting to the stem to enable easier access to connect it to flexible or rigid ducting in my crawl space attic. Shouldn't make the short extension longer cause it may prevent installation into roof hole.

Roof Cap with Built-In Damper for 6 in. Round Duct in Black is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 25.

The vent flap opened all the way with my bathroom exhaust fan. The opening seems large to keep out rain. That will be the true test. The 6”pipe could be a couple inches longer so there is room to attach a vent hose and clamp it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Collar at bottom not deep enough An additional collar had to be screwed into the one built into this hood in order for it to reach far enough into the attic to attach a hose. In short, no collar or a longer one would have been perfect and improved ease of installation, so I would not purchase this one again for that reason. Other wise, it has good features (damper and screen). I think there is a version without a built in collar.

Only issue for me was that the debris/rodent screen is basically just held in place with friction. There is a small lip that it fits into, but if anything (like a rodent) were to press against it, it will pop out. Would give 5 stars if had even a single screw to hold it in place. Also, the holes in the screen are too large to keep wasps or bees from entering the vent and finding their way into your home. I cut a piece of finer window screen, took out the roof cap screen and hooked the finer screen to the back of it by bending a few of the ends of the roof cap screen through the finer screen and then replacing it into the roof cap. It helps to flatten out the screen, then carefully reinsert it into the roof cap so that it will curve slightly and provide the necessary pressure against the cap to keep it in place (again - would be a stronger fit if there was a screw or clip of some sort to help hold the screen in place). Granted, the finer screen may reduce air flow a little, but not as much as a wasp nest being built inside the cap.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Broan six inch roof cap The neck was too short coming through the roof and it was a lot of trouble connecting the fan exhaust to it. I literally had to make up an extension to connect the fan exhaust duct to the roof cap Assembly. I don't understand why they just don't make it at least a quarter inch longer, Or at leased give you a sleeve to put over it to help with installation. You can tape the duct to it, but eventually it will leak, causing hot moist air to go into your attic, and defeat the whole purpose of the roof cap.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too short of a connection My only problem was that the throat of the pipe is too short to get a good seal when making the pipe connection after the unit is installed. a could extra inches would make life much easier for the interior or realize that the only way to get a good solid connection is to do this BEFORE installing the vent!
