Product Overview

The American Originals 5/16 in. product collection is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional 3/4 in. solid hardwood floors. Made in a thinner 5/16 in. structure, these floors use approximately 50% less raw material than traditional 3/4 in. solid products giving you the same beautiful, solid hardwood visual and performance with some truly unique advantages compared to 3/4 in. thick options. Unlike most factory-finished hardwood floors which have a bevel along the upper edges and ends of the floor, the American Originals 5/16 in. thick solid product from Bruce features a Square-edge, Square-end profile. Unique in the industry from Bruce, this gives you much more of a traditional sand-and-finish or site-finished visual with all of the advantages of a heavy-duty, factory-applied finish. And, because these floors come in the low-profile 5/16 in. thick format, they can be installed using either a staple-down or glue-down method and don't dramatically increase the height of your finished floors. In addition, unlike most traditional 3/4 in. solid floors, they can be glued-down directly to concrete subfloors (see Installation Instructions for full details).

Will this flooring turn Orange over time?

Asked by Gld May 5, 2021

Answer

Hi there, Color changes in hardwood flooring, patina, are a natural characteristic of all wood species. “Sun-shading”, ambering or yellowing, and mellowing are terms frequently used to describe this occurrence. The color change may be slow, such as in American Oak or very rapid as in Brazilian Cherry. Domestic species that change color rapidly are American Cherry and Pecan/Hickory. Most imported exotic species are dark in color naturally, but darken even more and often do so very rapidly. Market trends have shown a dramatic increase in usage of lighter stained products or products with no stain at all. The use of stain camouflages the natural color changes associated with wood. For that reason natural or unstained products may show color change more rapidly than if they had been stained. For your convenience, please visit the following link to view more details about color changes in hardwood: https://bit.ly/3h6AlVw We hope that this information is helpful. Please feel free to contact our Customer Services at 1-866-243-2726, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. EST., if you'd like additional assistance. Have a wonderful day.

Regarding acclimation, you state a minimum of one day, but could you recommend what is the optima...

Answer

Good afternoon Kathleen. Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. The following information is our current recommendation for acclimating solid hardwood. Solid hardwood flooring should be stored in the environment in which it is expected to perform. Deliver the materials to an environmentally-controlled site. The wood subflooring must not exceed 13% moisture content. Using a reliable wood moisture meter, measure and document the moisture content of both subfloor and hardwood flooring to determine proper moisture content. The difference in moisture content of the wood subfloor and the hardwood flooring must not exceed 4% for strip. Acclimate the hardwood flooring on or off the job, as necessary, to meet these requirements. Store in a dry place, being sure to provide at least a four-inch air space under cartons which are stored upon "on-grade" concrete floors. The cartons don't need to be opened, but if you do open them, they need to be completely opened. When gluing the 5/16" solid hardwood to concrete, it should be at least 60 days old. In regards to environmental conditions, the permanent air conditioning and heating systems should be in place and operational. Installation sites should have a consistent room temperature of 60° -75° F (16°-24° C), and humidity of 35-55% for 14 days prior and during installation and throughout the service life of the floor. I hope this information is helpful. Have a great day.

Can this be installed directly on plank flooring (3-1/2" wide) which is directly nailed onto floo...

Asked by Jonnyrudge October 8, 2017

Answer

Good Morning. Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. This flooring can be installed over plank subflooring that is attached to the joists, as long as the planking is at least 3/4" thick and nailed at a 45 degree angel to the floor joists. If this is not the case we would recommend a minimum 3/8" plywood underlayment be put over the plank flooring. If you are installing over the plank flooring you will need to nail the floor down, a 3/8" underlayment would be required for a glue down installation. I hope this information is helpful. Here is a link to the installation instructions for this floor. https://goo.gl/LymwYB I hope this information is helpful. Have a great day.

Good value wood flooring
This flooring was a good value, but there were too many imperfect boards for me to give a five star review. Often we would have a board nailed down, and then notice only after it was in place that the end of the board was slightly narrower than the rest, which was only noticeable when we laid in the next board and they wouldn't go together without a gap. Super annoying and wasted a lot of time! Overall, we had to replace about 5-10 boards per box because of this problem (we cut off the ends and used them, it just took extra time). But the wood is good quality and I'm happy with how it looks.

Response from Armstrong FlooringNov 7, 2018
Good morning Jeffrey. Thank you for taking the time to post a review of our product. I am sorry that you had an issue with this flooring. Hardwood floors are a product of nature and therefore, not perfect. Our wood floors are manufactured in accordance with accepted industry standards, which permit grading deficiencies not to exceed 5%. These grading deficiencies may be of a manufacturing or natural type. When flooring is ordered, 5% must be added to the actual square footage needed for cutting and grading allowance. If you experience more than 5% of the flooring being the incorrect width, I recommend returning the flooring to the store so that a flooring associate can initiate a warranty claim for you. Again I do apologize for any inconvenience. Have a great day. Armstrong

Love this hardwood!
This hardwood is beautiful. There was some minor scuffing from installing because a nail gun couldn't be used during installation (glue needed to be applied which led to more time during clean-up) but all was worth it in the end. I've gotten tons of compliments from the floor. I couldn't be happier!
