Questions & Answers

How much waste?

I need 435 square feet. Should I get 19 or 20 boxes?
Asked by: Hickpop
Add 10% to your total square footage for saw cuts ,blemishes and wrong cuts. 435 x .10 = 43.10 =478.5 / 23.5 = 20.4 boxes

Board Length -Maximum and average

What is the maximum board Length and average board length. The website states this: "3/4 in. Thickness x 5 in. Width x Random Length Planks up to 84 in." However, a previous question was answered that " no board is longer than 48". Please elaborate.
Asked by: Henry
Average I would say is 3' but some 5' and many 1'. It is random. I bought extra boxes to get what I wanted and then combined what was left to create a new box for return. Also to handle the pieces that had a bad grove or tongue.

Can this material be used for a butcher block style cabinet top?36

Asked by: 361412
I would not use it for a counter top. The planks do not fit flush together.

Customer Reviews

American Originals Natural Oak 3/4 in. Thick x 5 in. Wide x Random Length Solid Hardwood Flooring (23.5 sq. ft. / case) is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 67.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very poor quality product I ordered over 30 cases of this product to install in my newly renovated home. When I attempted to install this product, I realized all of the planks were slightly different widths making it impossible to create invisible seems during install. I got fed up and hired a contractor to finish the flooring. The contractor couldn't believe how unbelievably poorly cut this hardwood flooring was. He said installing it was a complete nightmare, and I had at least 20% of complete waist because the wood was so bad (not including the regular waist from cuts during install), causing me to purchase a minimum of 3 more boxes just to finish the job. What a nightmare! I would not recommend this product to anyone ever!

I had to return many boxes of warped and uneven boards. I recommend you purchase LOTS of extra boxes to get a quality product. Once installed, the floor looks great. Do not expect the planks to be perfectly flush....it is more of a rustic look.

Don't let the beauty of this wood trick you into buying it. Yes, it is beautiful but oh so delicate. I dropped my keys on the floor and ended up with a big gash. If you have a dog, forget it. We have to walk as if on eggshells. Also, if you don't like your floor talking back to you every time you take a step then this is not the floor for you. It squeaks terribly. After looking for weeks for the perfect flooring we decided on this and spent $10,000 plus installation and it was the biggest waste of money we have ever spent. I can't wait to have it replaced but I can't afford to yet so I am stuck with it.

So the installer would give it a 3.5 stars. First, have the product shipped to Homedepot, and not to your home. I've read some reviews that the boxes were messed up by the delivery to home. And some planks were damaged in transit, in these reviews. So I figured the delivery to HD ware house is probably more professional (forklift, pallet, etc.) I picked up the boxes from HD. Had to make 2 trips in my van. For me, no box was damaged, some planks were already damaged (on tongue edge) inside the box; less than 1%. They probably expect you to use those for cutting. Some planks were bowed (up and down); less than 1%. You have to throw those away. These are easy to catch. They don't lay flat on the floor, and you cannot nail them. Some planks were crooked (side to side); less than 1%. These are HARD to catch because they do lay flat on the floor, and they CAN be nailed. Installer had to catch those BEFORE nailing the crooked ones. Otherwise, the crooked plank would cause large gaps in the finished floor. And the installer would have to rip out that section and re-do. Installer hated the crooked ones (bananas) that he begged me not to purchase Bruce from HD next time. Bruce should have a procedure to week out the bowed, and ESPECIALLY the crooked planks. The crooked short planks are the worst because the gaps cannot be corrected.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beautiful flooring, but I'll never recommend them again! I ordered this flooring and installed it in a customer's home. I've installed 1000s of sq ft of flooring in the past, and will not recommend a Bruce product to anyone. Every last case of flooring I ordered had a width variance between 4 7/8" and 5 1/8". I had to go thru every single case and make stacks of same width product just to install this flooring. If it were for my personal home, or if it wasn't for the tight deadline on this particular job, I would have sent every last bit back to the factory.

During installation I needed to check every board by laying it on a level / straight edge to make sure the grove side did not have any irregularities. I found that with every 15th plank or so, the width of the board was less than 5 inches on the ends. This, of course, creates gaps between the installed boards that cannot be fixed unless you cut off the ends prior to installation. If you take the time to check each board you will end up with a beautiful floor.

While it looks great once installed...you have to be very diligent in looking over every piece. EVERY PIECE!!!. I find it very irritating that at this price point there is such a lack of QA. Some pieces will have orange or black markings on them, while it does come off it is annoying. Some pieces are absolutely out of square. Some tongues are severely damaged. Some have nicks in them that you will have to fill with putty. Some are warped. I purchased 18 boxes and had over one full box of unusable wood. And because it was a special order HD doesn't want to do a refund. I think at close to $120 a box it should be darn close to flawless. I've added some pics and let me assure you that no two pics are of the same board. OH...bummer, I can only add 6 pics. Well, there were many more than 6 boards with defects.

I did some research including talking to some specialty shops and calling Armstrong. I learned that the industry standard is 5% per case of damaged or off spec wood. Armstrong assured me that they would refund me if any box was more than 5%. I took the risk and purchased 8 boxes. Ended up only needing 6. The off spec percent was closer about 1%. I was very pleased with the quality and the look especially at this price point. Would definitely recommend. My only complaint is that Home Depot and Armstrong does not provide any information regarding a matching wood filler.
