Q:no underlayment necessary? should this go directly on subfloor?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Will! Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your question. Solid hardwood flooring can be fastened to most existing flooring materials providing they can be penetrated with the fastener and the subfloor/underlayment materials meet or exceed the recommended subfloor/underlayment requirements. Laminated rosin paper or 15# builders felt (tar paper) acts as a moisture retarder and may be used to reduce movement caused by changes in subfloor moisture, thereby reducing cupping and warping. (This is especially helpful over crawl spaces and basements.) In addition, the use of these materials can give the flooring a more solid feeling, reduce sound transfer, prevent noise caused by minor irregularities and debris, and make it easier to slide the hardwood together across the surface of the subfloor.  To act as a moisture barrier, structural panels/underlayment must be installed sealed side down. When used as a subfloor, allow 1/8˝ (3 mm) expansion space between each panel. If spacing is inadequate, cut in with a circular saw. Do not cut in expansion space on tongue and groove panels. Plywood: Should be minimum CDX grade (exposure 1) and meet US Voluntary Product Standard PS1-95 performance standard or Canadian performance standard CAN/CSA 0325-0-92. The preferred thickness is 3/4˝ (19 mm) as a subfloor [minimum 5/8˝ (16 mm)]. When using an underlayment panel a minimum 3/8˝ (9.5 mm) thickness is recommended. Oriented Strand Board (OSB): Conforming to US Voluntary Product Standard PS2-92 or Canadian performance standard CAN/CSA 0325-0-92 construction sheathing. Check the underside of the panel for codes. When used as a subfloor, the panels must be tongue and groove, and installed sealed side down. Minimum thickness to be 23/32˝ (18 mm) thick when used as a subfloor or 3/8˝ (9.5 mm) as an underlayment. Some board manufacturers’ recommendations vary. Answer This Question

A:  Hello There! Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your question. We are very excited to hear about your interest in our flooring product. Internet #202665073  in our American Treasures collection features a medium gloss and is graded best with a 50 year warranty while internet #202595885 in our Bruce American Home Series, sold exclusively through the Home Depot features a low gloss and is graded better with a 25 year warranty. There may also be other feature variations but these are the most notable. Grading refers to the presence of natural character in a product including but not limited to knots, worm holes, mineral streaking, minor milling imperfections, and board to board variation. Graded best products feature the least natural character, while graded good (or natural grade) features the greatest abundance of natural character. Graded better products are in between. DIY install - very satisfied
I've never installed flooring before. I purchased all of the required tools and just went for it - and it's coming along great! I'm really impressed with the product. I would estimate 5% waste from the work, and maybe 3% waste due to defective pieces/sections which I think is very reasonable. Finish is great, length selection is great, and the grain variance is great. Great all around! The price was excellent too.

This is beautiful flooring! The color is rich and we love it. We had a professional install it, so can’t speak to how hard/easy it was to install, but overall, we are very happy with this product. The true test will be how it wears overtime.

Looks great!! Good quality, great finish and easy to install. Did have about 5% of bad material scrap. Extremely warped, missing or splintered tongue and had two boards of a different species. The biggest issue was the varying widths. Had to sort boards to insure we had an entire row of the same width. Issue may have been one bad carton that got mixed. We mixed up the boxes to ensure we had a good color distribution throughout the floor.

            5 years Later
Was rumaging through the attic and came across 2 cases left over from our project from 5 years ago. I came to Home Depot to still see if it was still available and want to share our review. Although it has gone up in price, it’s an awesome product. Out of 23 cases, we had next to no waste. Maybe 5 boards. Our Country Natural has held up really well. There is minor UV fading near our padio door and very minimal scratching. Would highly recomend this flooring, it stands the test of time and is a really great product. Worth every penny.

Beautiful product. Very hard wood, does not mar easily. A lot of color diversity throughout and a real nice finish. Floor installed well and not many pieces unusable. Recommend spotting joists prior to avoid nailer jams.

Great product. Purchased on sale at about $3.70 a sqft. Most boxes had long strips. Some boxes had only short strips that must be intermingled with the long strips or used near end of run. Overall very please as strips are nice and straight without warping.

Superb product for the price! We've replaced our old carpeting upstairs with this product and really enjoy the richness and warmth it's brought to our rooms. Based on price comparison between carpeting (padding too) and hardwood; it was almost the same price and we'll get yearssss more use out of hardwood.
