Questions & Answers

I need to dig a 20 inch deep utilities trench. Is this the shovel to use?

I need to dig a 20 inch deep trench for an electric cable. How long is the head of the shovel? How do I dig beneath grade level?
Asked by: Rick
The head of the shovel is 12" long. Since the blade is only 3" wide there would not be much room to get a foot down on the blade when it is more than 12" below the ground level. Also the trench would only be a little over three inches wide - which minimizes dirt removal but would make it hard to remove large rocks or cut through roots. However, you could still use shovel this to dig the trench if the soil is loose or you take time to loosen it by hitting down on it with a pry bar. The blade is at a substantial angle from the handle so that scooping up dirt would be easy. This is a very well made and sturdy tool, and could work well for your purpose if the problems I noted are not an issue.
