This shovel is very heavy. It's definitely not what I was expecting. As advertised, it is 100% steel except for the rubber grip at the end. Much heavier than any other shovel I've used, it works awesome but using it all day long may prove tiring. Seriously, this thing weighs almost ten pounds. One thing it is great for though is chopping through tree roots. I used my die grinder and put just a little bit of an edge on it and man it cuts through roots so easily thanks to the weight behind it. It doesn't have as much of a curve to the blade as my other caprock shovels. While great for cutting through tough roots or hard clay I think I'd want something a bit lighter to do the actual scooping of the dirt with. The extra weight is great for breaking up the material but can wear you out unnecessarily. The handle is indeed steel and they did a sufficient job of welding it to the blade. I weigh 300 pounds and can really lean on this sucker without worrying about it snapping like wood or fiberglass might. It would probably work great for digging narrow trenches for wiring. The relatively flat blade, heavy weight, and steel handle means you could stomp it into the ground and wobble it back and forth to open up a narrow trench for some low-voltage wiring. Once the wiring is in then just walk along the slit in the ground to push the sod or soil back in place. The rubber grip does not offer much in the way of cushioning. It seems like it's more meant to help you maintain your grip than to save you from blisters.

I tried this shovel for cleaning up some plants in my backyard. Some of the plants were quite old and the roots gone too deep in the soil. The soil was another problem, full of rocks and not easy to dig in. I am not a big guy, so I did not expect to be completely uprooting these by myself, even with a shovel. I was surprised at the amount of brute force and leverage this shovel provides. The weight is perfect without being too heavy and the silicone grip is very comfortable on the hands. I was able to take the toughest roots out of the ground (see pics). The shovel has not budged one bit and feels brand new (after all that yard work). I think this shovel would definitely outlive me :)

There is a problem I have with shovels - breaking handles-. I can assure you this is one shovel that will not happen. Often when using a shovel I come upon stones or roots in the soil. Rather than getting another tool to deal with the obstruction I like to keep on shoveling pry the stone out or slice through the root. Now I have the tool that can do both and no fear of breaking the handle. The handle is strong and the blade is sharp. I should mention the shovel is a little heavier with the steel handle than those with wood handles.

This made in America shovel is a beast. It is an all metal construction, with the exception of the foam grip at the end of the handle. Since it is all metal, it is pretty heavy and probably not a great substitute for your every day shovel. But I have a lot with tons of tree and bush roots. This shovel makes short work of going through them. It even has a edge to the shovel that works like a cutting area. Really nice. This heavy shovel does not bounce off of roots. You go right through them.

I just got this and I already have about 10 uses for it. First of all its a HEAVY duty shovel. Solid welds and I am betting I can reef out large roots without ever worrying that my shovel will bend and break. I have broken many a shovel trying to pry out roots. The handle is a soft yet very durable rubbery grip worthy handle The shaft and shovel are very well constructed and I cannot wait to get this into the dirt! yes I just received it but I have all the answers I need to give this fine Paul Approved review!

This shovel is definitely heavy duty and is much heavier compared to normal shovels. It will be strong enough for tough jobs. I used it to dig a large hole in the yard of a trailer park lot that was filled with thick roots and chunks of concrete. It did the job well. The difference between this and your average shovel is that this shovel is nearly flat rather than the scooped shape of a normal shovel. This is called the "lift" of a shovel. I included a comparative picture of both kinds of shovels to show the difference. This type of shovel will be better for difficult materials to dig into and for digging vertically. The handle of the shovel has a foam covering over it for ease of comfort. There is no hole in the handle to hang on a garage hook though. That was my only criticism. Other than that, it was well made and strong. Its not likely to break.

The Bully Tools heavy duty 12 gauge Caprock shovel is not your ordinary shovel, this is heavy duty. The handle is steel with a large comfort grip section at the top. The blade is 12 gauge steel and my shovel weighed in at 8.7 pounds. Much of my property is of rock mixed with the dirt and this shovel is ideal for digging in the rock. This is also ideal for digging out for sod and edging the sod for replanting and yet is strong enough to dig up and cut thru roots. This is a quality heavy duty shovel.

Very, very impressed Excellent welding work Already has a standard 45-degree bevel and nice cutting edge. One can go right to work cutting roots or sod Just the right overall weight to let the tool do the work when chopping Long, thick heavy-duty grip that both hands easily fit on. The thick grip curves around the end nicely, too. So you can comfortably use your palm on the end.
