Questions & Answers

Can you use a warming mat with this trays?
ByAug 9, 2024

Answer This Question

Yes just make sure the heat mat is underneath the tray. Happy Gardening!

By|Aug 12, 2024

How does the mat get water into the pods? All I see is a black mat that absorbs water. Do the pods have holes in the bottom to absorb water? Is it enough water -- other burpee trays have holes in the bottom and absorb water directly without a mat.

    Answer This Question

In a self-watering greenhouse seed starter kit, the water is typically supplied from a reservoir located below the planting cells. The planting cells usually have some form of wicking material, such as a felt or fabric strip, that extends from the bottom of the cell into the reservoir. This wicking material draws water upward through capillary action, keeping the soil consistently moist. When the soil in the planting cells dries out, the wicking material continuously pulls water from the reservoir up into the soil, ensuring that the plant roots have a steady supply of moisture. This process helps to maintain optimal growing conditions for seeds and seedlings without the need for frequent watering by the gardener.

How often do you have to add water to the bottom of the tray once the lid is down.

      Answer This Question

If the seeds have not sprouted you only want to have about ¼ inch or water in the tray. Once the plants are growing you will need to keep more water, about an inch. Check every few days.

Can I start a Bonsai seed in this container?

        Answer This Question

We do not recommend this tray for bonsai. Bonsai trees need a very specific tray and soil for training.

How easy are these trays to reuse?

          Answer This Question

If you intend to keep reusing the trays, you need to remove the plants carefully and best to clean it right away. The mat may need to be replaced every year.

Yes. I used a heat mat for my pepper seeds and they did great.

It works great for larger seed like tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, however if you are planting tiny seed like impatiens it is best to remove the self watering part until the seeds have sprouted.

Do I need to use all the cells at once? Can I use just some of them and use the rest later?

                  Answer This Question

It is not required to use all cells at the same time.

                  By|Apr 18, 2022

It's split into 2 36 cell trays. You can do as many or as few as you want. If you're careful removing the seedlings you can reuse them.

The seed starter worked exactly as advertised. I am very satisfied with the product and would recommend it to persons looking to start seedlings on a budget.

                      Compared Trays
I bought this and the Jiffy seed starter kit. The jiffy was definitely easier to set up but I like that I can get seed starter soil and reuse this tray. With the jiffy one, I have to purchase their pellets to reuse it. I found the watering mat a bit difficult to fit correctly. This is also hard to move when full of water. The lid is not a secure fit. I wish it could snap in place but I do appreciate that the tray is in two pieces so I can move them around easier. The pellets were frustrating. They flip on their side when expanding and get stuck. They weren't all the same size either. I wound up topping off with soil. Over all, I would buy again.

                        Can't transplant!
The roots of the seeds are far too long after three weeks to safely remove them from the plastic cells rendering the whole thing rather a waste.

Wonderful system, used for a decade!
I have used these Burpee systems for 10 years now, and am about to purchase a new set. I plant about 300 flower annuals and perennials from seed every year, which is cheaper and gives me much more flexibility in what I plant. Plus, I get to keep gardening during the winter! With these trays, germination time is greatly reduced and far more reliable, for me. Sometimes, my zinnia and marigold seedlings come up in 2-3 days. I do make one major adjustment to the seed starting medium. I take all the coir disks out of the tray, put 1/3 to 1/2 of them in a giant steel mixing bowl, add the right amount of water proportionately, and expand them that way. If some are hard, I break them up with my fingers. Then I add proportionately 2/3 to 1/2 other seed starting soil that has less coir. I have used several different brands over the years, depending on what I can find. For me, this mixture produces stronger seedlings and less molding. I love the self-watering system, because I have a tendency to forget to check them frequently enough. Though, I do a tiny bit of top watering or misting in the cells that aren't wicking early on (they always wick fine, once the seedlings have enough roots). I use these trays in a 3-tier grow light stand, and use heat mats for seeds that need extra heat for germination. I also remove the humidity dome the second the seedlings appear (another way to prevent mold or damping off).

I may have to buy more! All pellets expanded within 15-20 seconds of adding warm water. Excited to sow some seeds now!

Purchased this kit at a big box store for starting an indoor flower garden. The pellets expanded easily and quickly, and all my seeds have sprouted and seem to be growing rapidly! I’m wondering if other reviewers received old/stale coir medium?
