Can you use a warming mat with this trays?
Yes just make sure the heat mat is underneath the tray. Happy Gardening!
How does the mat get water into the pods? All I see is a black mat that absorbs water. Do the pods have holes in the bottom to absorb water? Is it enough water -- other burpee trays have holes in the bottom and absorb water directly without a mat.
In a self-watering greenhouse seed starter kit, the water is typically supplied from a reservoir located below the planting cells. The planting cells usually have some form of wicking material, such as a felt or fabric strip, that extends from the bottom of the cell into the reservoir. This wicking material draws water upward through capillary action, keeping the soil consistently moist. When the soil in the planting cells dries out, the wicking material continuously pulls water from the reservoir up into the soil, ensuring that the plant roots have a steady supply of moisture. This process helps to maintain optimal growing conditions for seeds and seedlings without the need for frequent watering by the gardener.
How often do you have to add water to the bottom of the tray once the lid is down.
If the seeds have not sprouted you only want to have about ¼ inch or water in the tray. Once the plants are growing you will need to keep more water, about an inch. Check every few days.
Can I start a Bonsai seed in this container?
We do not recommend this tray for bonsai. Bonsai trees need a very specific tray and soil for training.
How easy are these trays to reuse?
If you intend to keep reusing the trays, you need to remove the plants carefully and best to clean it right away. The mat may need to be replaced every year.
Can you use a heat mat under the kit?
Yes. I used a heat mat for my pepper seeds and they did great.
It works great for larger seed like tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, however if you are planting tiny seed like impatiens it is best to remove the self watering part until the seeds have sprouted.

Do I need to use all the cells at once? Can I use just some of them and use the rest later?
It is not required to use all cells at the same time.
It's split into 2 36 cell trays. You can do as many or as few as you want. If you're careful removing the seedlings you can reuse them.
