Q:How many bricks do I need for a 3 gallon pot? Is one brick enough?
by|Sep 8, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  The seed starting brick should expand to 8 quarts of soil. A 3 gallon pot would require 12 quarts to completely fill the pot. Of course you do not want to fill this pot to the brim when planting. With that being said, the amount of soil required will also depend on the size of the root bowl of your plant. Our suggestion would be to have at least 2 bricks of seed starting mix for your pot size. You most likely won't use the entire second brick, however, we do not believe 1 brick would be enough.

A:  While not intended for grass seed application, Burpee 8qt Concentrated Seed Starting Mix is 100% coir and is a perfect for keeping seeds moist for better seed germination. The key to successful grass seed germination and establishment is good seed to soil contact. Be sure to follow directions on your grass seed packaging. Once seed is applied, lightly cover seed with Burpee Seed Starting Mix and be sure to keep area moist to touch. Good luck and we appreciate your business!

              Great value
Added warm water to the concentrated brick and saw it expand, since this step moistens the medium it’s easy to pack it in seed starting kits. I use my gardening gloves to throughly break it apart once the water touches it.

                Good for hydrponics
I found my new favorite seed starter. side by side next to my old bag of starter it is the same amount and it cost around half the price. Its easy to stack and store. plus the brick can be cut and broken apart if you only wanted to use a portion. I am using in hydroponics and do far working great.

Terrific for planting seeds and sead pods. We threw it in a 5 gal pail added some water after a few minutes took my littler rake to it pulled it apart and mixed it. It expanded to a gigantic pile of dirt more then enough to plant everything I had to plant that day. Close to a dozen planters in varying sizes. A quick simple way to fill your planters. No huge heavy bags to carry plus until your ready its a small little block of dirt. Personally I love it and will be buying again.

Higher quality than similar products. Highly recommend. Great packaging. I appreciate that it's 100% coconut coir. It holds water very well, and I've never had a problem with any mold. Plants sprout up in no time. Starting using this product last year, and it's now my go-to when I start my gardening. It has exceeded my expectations.

Very easy to work with easy to rehydrate although I would recommend adding vermiculite or a little bit of other potting mix because by itself it doesn't retain moisture so you have to constantly ad water. And you also have to add your own plant nutrients which is fine because then you know exactly what's in it

I love this stuff for seed starting. I can keep several bricks without worrying about moisture or mold and it is so much easier to carry around and store. I use large storage sized zip-locks to rehydrate them. One brick fills the bag, the picture was taken after I had used more than half.

Stay away from this mix! We are proficient vegetable gardeners and tried it this year to save a few bucks, and instead, it ended up ruining this year's garden. We live in CT and begin our pepper, tomato, and eggplant seeds indoors in March and have a indoor grow-light set-up with heat and ventilation. Typically, the plants thrive and are tall and lush when we move them outdoors in May. We end up with hundreds of fruits. This year, with this Burpee coconut fiber mix, the seeds did sprout but basically didn't grow. After 2 months indoors, they were barely 1-2 inches tall, yellow, and (we noticed upon transplant) basically didn't develop any root systems. In prior years, they have virtually been exploding out of their pots. We held out hope that after transplanting them outdoors into the garden -- which we fill with high-quality compost from a dairy farm -- that they would perk up and have a delayed reaction. Nope. They are utterly stunted. It's like they can't send roots out into the good soil. Even after being in the ground now for a full month, some plants have not grown a bit and others have grown a tiny bit...not enough that we envision they will ever produce anything before Fall arrives. There are peppers that are still 1 inch tall! That we began in March and have cared for painstakingly now for 3 months! We are so disappointed and are facing a summer without any peppers, eggplant, and maybe a handful of tomatoes, despite having started 80 plants indoors months ago. We have paid to run the light system, have compost delivered, and water the entire garden, which all adds up, not to mention our labor. Our garden and the produce it produces are a highlight of our year, 9+ months of the year or hobby and cooking and eating, and this year, it's a bust. We have used Jiffy in the bag in all prior years with great results and will definitely go back to that next year. I should also note that we used seeds from several packs, including Burpee brand and some of our own - 3 tomato varieties, 5 pepper varieties, and the eggplant - so we know that getting a bad pack of seeds was not the problem. The problem was universal regardless of the type of plant or seed source. We also used many packages of this Burpee mix, so we know that the issue was not a bad pack of the mix either.
