AnswerYes you can cut the rails. You may be forced to drill a new bracket mounting hole. Do your calculations. You may be able to cut both ends off and not redrill.

AnswerCould if it was a flat profile or a thin door. You could also install handles if you were ok with handle running into edge of other door. You could place handle on the outside of the outside door without a problem.
How would you put a door latch on this type of system? This will be for the master bedroom. Thanks!

FYI this product is made in China. (wasn't very happy to discover that) Yes the instructions are absolutely terrible. The wheels are plastic or nylon but beefy. Now let's put to rest the poor reviews.
First if you are smarter than the bolts that come in the kit, this item needs nothing to to be reengineered or different hardware. The inside rail (closest to wall) is lag bolted directly to the wall with the spacers (not hung on the brackets. see photos I attached).
Second rail is separately bolted to the hanging brackets so that the two rails appear connected but are not.
ALL measurements are in metric. However the fractional equivalent is below the metric one. Not sure what the other reviewers had to reengineer or what hardware that wasn't correct, mine went up perfectly and I can move a 120lb door with my pinky finger. Rubber bumpers at each end are a nice touch to quiet the stop.

The installation instructions are almost worthless. Every measurement is metric with occasional conversion to the 32nd or 64th of an inch. Very few written instructions, and picture instructions are not always intuitive. Bolts and nuts are also metric. So, make sure you have metric wrenches. In the case of using these doors in an opening that is larger than a typical single 36" opening there are no instructions. Had to figure it out on my own.
Since we were using these in a non traditional opening it was difficult to determine how long we needed to make the doors. The gap between the rail and the top of the door is not given. Eventually we just made a mock up of a corner and measured.
Once they were installed they work perfectly. They almost roll too easily.
So, I would like to recommend the product, but installation instructions keep me from being able to.

It did the job but had to be reengineer. The instructions was all but not there who ever engineered this piece and did the instructions needs to go back to kindergarten and start over. Next most of the bolts were wrong, way too short. After the initial cost plus the trips back to the hardware store, the time spent on travel, the time spent on reengineering, gas and last but not least purchasing the right parts the barn door was way over priced.
No I would not recommend this item.
By the way now I have to go back and paint all the new shiny silver bolts black since the wrong bolts was powder coated also they were all metric so when you buy new bolts you have to buy new washers and nuts because the hardware stores do not have meterics in the right lengths or sizes.
NOT A HAPPY CAMPER!!!!!!!!
