Q:wher do I get the feedin cakes to fit cage

    Answer This Question

A:  First thing... Winter is the time I use Suet Baskets... Make your own. My birds will not eat the store ones. Summer does not work well if you are using animal fat because it spoils. Beef fat is best if the temperatures during the day get much above freezing. The reason is that it takes warmer temperature than, say pork fat, to melt. That means it does not melt and fall apart on warm days as easily. Make your own suet by getting waste beef trimmings from your grocer. Melt the fat in a large pot. Take what does not melt and chop it up in a cuisinart with a bit of bread and/or corn meal. There are a dozen, or more, recipes online. But I add peanut butter, unsalted nuts, dried fruit, dried worms and bird seed. Mix, pour fat into flat glass bowls (whatever you have that works), add whatever, and put in your freezer overnight. The next day, put 1-2 inches of warm water at the bottom of your kitchen sink and in five minutes, or less, you can turn them upside-down onto wax paper. Wrap them individually in wax paper and store in a plastic bag in the freezer until they are needed. Your backyard will be full of birds, and they will love you for it.

A:  They sell a few varieties at Home Depot. A large superstore which is prevalent everywhere (which I probably cannot name here) has MANY varieties of suet cakes at less than $1 per. I saw at least 10 varieties there just this week.

works so well i got another
I purchased my first of these a months ago and it works well and has stood up to the birds well so i decided to get another. You can adjust the length of the chain so you can easily change how far the basket hangs.

Neat inexpensive feeder, works with all the C and S suets. Simply insert the suet and hang off a feeder or branch, etc. Birds land on it and peck away at the food. Depending where you mount it, squirrels will not get a hold of it. It is easy to open and close and the metal is coated so it is rust-proof/resistant. You can also use this to hold bait for traps as well. The holder is about 6" x 6" and is made in India.

        Excellent suet feeder
Had one, thought two would be better(more choices for the birds). I did place a twist tie on it after I closed it, just for extra security.

Best suet basket. Easy to open and insert suet. Long hanging chain. Long enough to hand and hold suet basket closed. Even the squirrels can’t get it open .

This is an updated feeder cage, easier to open and insert the suet cake with very little mess.
