Questions & Answers

What size screw should I use for 1x6 (0.75x5.5) Garapa hardwood deck boards?

What size screw should I use for 1x6 (0.75x5.5) Garapa hardwood deck boards?
Asked by: JR
Thank you for your CAMO question. When installing 1x6 decking, we recommend you use the CAMO 1-7/8" Edge Deck Screws as they are designed for installing boards 3/4" to 1" in thickness. Please keep in mind, when using CAMO to install a hardwood such as garapa, we recommend you use the 316 Stainless Steel CAMO Edge Deck Screws. You can use the ProTech Coated CAMO Edge Deck Screws, but the tannin release (found in certain hardwood decking material such as garapa, ipe, mahogany, redwood, etc) and the acidity of the deck board may cause staining and streaking when a non-stainless steel fastener is used. Additionally, when installing hardwood decking with Stainless Steel CAMO Edge Deck Screws, pre-drilling is recommended due to the density of the decking material. This will allow for easier installation and an even cleaner look. Pre-drill instructions can be found on camofasteners.com, in the installation guide of your CAMO Marksman Tool or you can purchase the CAMO Pre-Drill Bit (model #0345035). Customer Reviews

1-7/8 in. 316 Stainless Steel Trimhead Deck Screw (700-Count) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from good so far So far this product has proved to be a good investment. I have used about two thirds of the screws. They work well with the Camo jig they were meant for. Following the instructions that come with the jig there is no problem getting the screws to seat into the deck boards. The screws are self taping so there is no need for predrilling. There is one problem I have encountered. If one makes a mistake it's hard to remove the screws as they have a tendency to strip out in the deck board . As I am a novice with installing deck boards I learned the hard way that using a drill motor to remove the screws leads to stripping the screws. I now use a ratchet with the driver that comes with the screws and back them out slowly. It sounds like I have to do this often but not so. I've only had to remove about 10 screws and that's because of my inexperience. A word of caution. The Camo jig has 2 tabs underneath which act as spacers and hold the jig in place and provide equal spacing between boards. As I can't seem to find perfectly straight boards I secure the ends of each board as I install them and then usually I have to drive in wedges between the new board and existing board to separate the 2 boards enough to get the jig's tabs into place. Without the Camo jig the screws don't seem to have much purpose. This system is fast once one gets used to the set up.
