How many tomatoes would one container hold? Is 4 too many?

Asked by: gardenista
I am doing 4 and it works - all 4 are producing nicely. However, next year I’m buying an additional planter and I’ll do 3 each, which I feel will be more manageable.

How do these handle the rain? I see some with a cover and some without or some under an awning and some in the open. How does the water drain out?
Asked by: jr
We have had ridiculous amounts of rain and they do fine. Excess water runs out the little drain hole in the side. This planter is great.

How to Self water the self waterer?!

I have a disabled adult child whom I set this up for... with 4 tomatoes plants. She has memory issues. How can I set up a siphon system from a bucket of water to the planter? Just create a siphon from in the hose from the bucket down into the bottom of the fill pipe? She lived in a condo and has no spigot outside. Aside from her poor memory, She can’t carry a. Full watering can out to the box and easily pour it into the pipe. Also, she’s goi g away for 2 weeks. Any ideas how to keep the resovour full, easily?thx

I love the self watering feature. The dirt won’t wick if you leave it dry too long. I use a gallon jug each night and pour it into the long tube, which allows the water to go into the space beneath the plants. It takes 3 gallons to fill the space. I think this method works wayyy better than other regular planters because the roots don’t rot and the dirt doesn’t dry out the same way.
